otoh Stanton+Ellsbury+Happ = $65m :-/

The Ravishing of ROFL Stein (Hadrian VIII), Sunday, 13 October 2019 13:43 (four years ago) link

Nothing is worse than that Italian gibberish Sterling does for Stanton home runs. I’ve actually enjoyed Stanton being out of the lineup in that I don’t have to hear it.

Stanton can go f an uncle

At one extreme, there's letting a team go up 10-0 in the first inning; at the other, "God, no, back-to-back hits!"

i'm sure that wasn't all -- had to believe Paxton wasn't sharp

The walk was the killer--he had him 0-2.

I thought Paxton looked okay. I'm hoping Boone pays for this as (if? gulp...) the series goes deeper, but they're carrying 13 pitchers, so maybe it's no big deal.

clemenza, Monday, 14 October 2019 01:34 (four years ago) link

Paxton was first pitch ball to nine of the twelve batters he faced.

Four hits total given up by both teams' bullpens. 12 IP.

timellison, Monday, 14 October 2019 05:01 (four years ago) link

Pretty rough that Happ was the best option. I know Paxton didn’t look so sharp - but a less-sharp-Paxton > 2019 Happ.

The station here came back late from commercial last night--Correa's HR was just leaving the park...Correa's really got some Ronald Acuna in him. Three times he put on a little show, and there were more theatrics on the HR than with Bautista's bat-flip.

clemenza, Monday, 14 October 2019 11:53 (four years ago) link

it occurs to me that behavior such as tampering with the ball to deliberately modify outcomes as the league begins to invest itself into legalized sports betting is fundamentally the same sort of behavior that, when done by a player, gets them banned from the game for life https://t.co/FeVagdQwDh

NYC Wednesday forecast looking thoroughly wet. Who if anyone benefits from a Game 4 postponement? No way they throw Verlander on 3 days' rest Thursday, but he gets a Friday Game 5 start surely.

i would think that more off days makes the yankees' bullpenning more feasible. the big three astros are gonna get two starts each no matter what happens

mookieproof, Monday, 14 October 2019 17:37 (four years ago) link

I notice all the raves across the internet for Correa's theatrics today. I'm fine with his post-HR show--I really don't police stuff like that--but, as a Jays fan, I'm a little puzzled when set next to the reaction to Bautista's bat-flip, which was much more polarizing. Is it just the passage of four years? I used to have a whole speech defending Bautista, a list of circumstances that made it a perfect storm of a cathartic moment; Correa engaged in more for less.

clemenza, Monday, 14 October 2019 18:46 (four years ago) link

having it come against the Yankees is the real difference here

frogbs, Monday, 14 October 2019 18:48 (four years ago) link

4 years is a long time. like bautista isn't even in the league rn, nevermind the We Play Loud commercial, which I admittedly haven't seen on air since acuna didn't run out his double lol

#WePlayLoud now

mookieproof, Monday, 14 October 2019 18:51 (four years ago) link

also bautista's bat chuck is iconic now so all's well that ends well

Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Monday, 14 October 2019 18:52 (four years ago) link

yeah it's like the 2nd result for him on autocomplete

frogbs, Monday, 14 October 2019 18:53 (four years ago) link

I'll put it down to the calendar then (and I realize Bautista already had a reputation).

538's current odds (they stuck by the Raptors the whole way last spring):

Nationals - 34%
Yankees - 32%
Astros - 30%
Cardinals - 4%

Obviously, you've-got-to-get-there-first is driving this--I'm sure they'll have Houston or NY favored over Washington, if it comes to that--but still noteworthy.

clemenza, Monday, 14 October 2019 18:54 (four years ago) link

i remember people *talking* about bautista's flip, but i can't say i remember many people complaining about it (apart from the usual trolls)

man that jays-rangers 7th inning tho

mookieproof, Monday, 14 October 2019 18:58 (four years ago) link

If you google "bautista bat flip controversy," I think you'll find reactions on both sides. The smartest ones were defending him, but I remember a lot of negative reaction, too.

clemenza, Monday, 14 October 2019 19:05 (four years ago) link

game 4 will be a bullpen game for the yankees (barring rain), suggesting that they'll need more than 2.1 from severino in game 3
