In terms of sonic invention and out and out crazeeness, Tim was always ahead of the Neps, who have a generally catchier vibe to their shit and the willingness to work with EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE. If Kiley worked with them instead of Tim, Interscope probably wouldn't be having her change her record, allegedly for being too 'black-sounding'.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 16 October 2003 14:03 (twenty years ago) link

i'm so fucking obsessed with this record. the first album i've bought in god knows how long.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 16 October 2003 14:16 (twenty years ago) link

"Kiley's too black-sounding for me." < /Patrick Bateman>

Also, maybe I'm misguided but 'Jimmy Mathis' and 'Comin' Round' would make great UK singles, maybe even decent charting ones.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 16 October 2003 14:36 (twenty years ago) link

You're right Barima, unless the UK hates great, catchy songs. I don't see how anyone could not like "Jimmy Mathis," at least for a little while.

rob geary (rgeary), Thursday, 16 October 2003 16:40 (twenty years ago) link

"She Tried" really reminds me of Kid Rock's "Black Chick, White Guy," which I mean as a totally huge compliment.

Didn't do it for me. Love "Jimmy Mathis", though. The "Stone Fox Chase" sample is killer.

One of Tim's best production jobs. Love it!

Sean (Sean), Friday, 14 November 2003 18:53 (twenty years ago) link

This is a good album. Solid. A couple weak tracks. The strong tracks are really, really good.

Bubba Sparxxx has nearly completed his new album for Big Boi's new label...

JoB (JoB), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 14:59 (nineteen years ago) link

I rediscovered this album just the other day! 'Nowhere' still one of my favourite songs ever. Totally slept on at the time: 'Hootnanny'

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 15:09 (nineteen years ago) link

It's good stuff, I'm looking forward to this new album. Seems like he's found his own space fairly comfortably...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 15:10 (nineteen years ago) link

Kiley Dean = female Bubba.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 15:13 (nineteen years ago) link

And her track 'America' is a beautiful inverse of 'Nowhere' - the chorus is "nowhere's the place to go, let's get on the open road..."

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 15:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Hi, Alex.

beatboxed 'comin round the mountain' sounds like pure genius

Which track was this?

BARMS, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 15:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Hi Barima!

That was 'Disappear'.

Is there a thread on the new album "The Charm" yet? I think it's mediocre at best, and thoroughly disappointing.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Sunday, 5 March 2006 22:45 (eighteen years ago) link

You're right about disappointing, though it might be slightly better than mediocre.

From LAST year's country thread (and I think from hip-hop thread last year too):

So far, I'm liking the new album, but I'm also pretty disappointed by it; there doesn't seem to be any country-oriented stuff, which sucks, but I guess Bubba has to move on. So far my favorite track is "Wonderful," but that could change. The Pablo track's good, too.
-- xhuxk (xedd...), October 24th, 2005.

Actually i think its that country-motif stuff that was painting him into a corner
-- deej.. (clublonel...), October 24th, 2005.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Maybe, but that doesn't mean it wasn't his best stuff. (Plus, I'm not sure *why* it would paint him into a corner. There's as much possibility in incorporating country as in *not* incorporating country. And there's definitely more possibility in incorporating both country *and* non-country. Getting rid of it makes his horizons *less* wide, not more.) (That goes for David Banner too, by the way.)
-- xhuxk (xedd...), October 24th, 2005.

-- xhuxk (xedd...), October 25th, 2005.

Also, no Timbaland, which deej also seemed to think takes Bubba out of a corner, though I don't see why that would be true either, given Timbos perpetual restlessness. Maybe those who think the restlessness is un-Bubbalicious would expect him to shine without it, but paint'n'corner seems to be the wrong metaphor.

-- Frank Kogan (edcasua...), October 25th, 2005.

------
Actually, I don't think Frank had heard the new album then, though. And the version I was listening to last October was a "rough mix," and since then, two ignorable songs from the original version have been replaced by two different equally ignorable songs on the new one. I still want to think the album's a keeper, but maybe that's just wishful thinking. Whether it's a keeper or not, it's by far the worst and most marginal album Bubba's made.

I liked Claremont Lounge. Haven't heard the album yet.

deej.. (deej..), Sunday, 5 March 2006 23:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, "The Otherside" was the Petey Pablo one I mentioned above. And I guess I thought "Claremont Lounge" was okay, but kinda so-what; aren't that one and "Hey" the two that weren't on the original advances sent out last fall? I should go back and listen to "Claremount" again. I *want* to like the album; just don't see how it stands up to his first two.

xhuxk, Sunday, 5 March 2006 23:19 (eighteen years ago) link

Too many songs about/for strippers, per current crappy hip-hop trends. They're just so boring, not fun and worst of all not sexy in the least.

four years pass...

I left off of mama's with my thumb in the wind
The leaves on the ground, winter's comin again
Solid on the surface as I crumble within
But legends are made out of vulnerable men
So on the brink of death I still manage livin life
Cause so rarely in this world are these chances given twice
I indeed sold my soul, without glancing at the price
No instructions when I was handed this device
But with what I did get, I was more than generous
Put others over self on several instances
But I'm back on my feet without a hint of bitterness
And one way or another I shall have deliverance
So I say

;_;

EVERYONE Have NONE of you heard the pre-album mixtape for this? It was called New South and it's not the one you can get on iTunes which is some random Greg Street compilation. It's a 19 track affair entirely produced by Timbaland with mostly Bubba but also "the Muddkatz" - Duddy Ken, Attitude, RIcky Rucker, Kiley Dean, Petey Pablo and it's all really damn good. All originals except for 'In the Mudd' which is a remix of In da Club by 50.

You can hear it for free here - http://grooveshark.com/#!/playlist/DJ+Enuff+and+Timbaland+Present+Bubba+Sparxxx+and+The+Mudd+Katz+New+South+The+Album+B4+The+Album/66065631 - but I will find a way to get a copy to y'all if you want. I don't know where I originally got it.
