I hope this wasn't directed at me, Brad.

directed at paul ponzi who sucks. you don’t suck

I never realised until now how far Ariel Pink had fallen from grace in P4K's eyes. I would've assumed Before Today would at least place. That record is still a damn front to back classic.

Right now the most surprising inclusion to see on here is Alabama Shakes.

probably the biggest surprise for me is The Pinkprint because my memory of the general reception of every Nicki Minaj album has been "this is a bit underwhelming"
― ufo, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:48 (four years ago) link
Also Ariel Pink's "Round and Round" did place at #31 on the tracks list. So he's not completely forgotten.

One of my favorite inclusions, tbh. That album is excellent

if dj rashad (who was obviously great) was still alive he wouldn't have crashed that top twenty, but his death gives just enough discourse for him to nose in amongst the royals

i do not understand any ldr record that is not ultraviolence or honeymoon and i’m still a little baffled that the discourse around the new one insists i should think she’s a good lyricist. she isn’t

ariel pink's stock has gone way down after how terrible and obnoxious he was around the time of his last album. that album was his best in a long time though, except for him saying tr*nny on it which combined with his other antics make me never want to listen to him again really
its kinda weird that ldr has so instantly gone from critically underrated to overrated to this degree but i like the album well enough that i'm not really bothered
― ufo, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 13:59 (four years ago) link
I read an essay about it in Frieze. They were pretty enamoured of her wry yet gloomy take on Americana, especially—the writer said—her understanding that Anerica isn’t ending, but already over. From that it seemed like it was more of a Pop Art homage thing tailor made for people who tead Frieze more than it was an album made for music listeners.
However, I haven’t listened to it yet. I will though—I mostly like her work.

Going from "Round and Round" as the best song of whatever year to reviewing Miranda Lambert albums counts as a victory for something or other, I must admit.

A lot of writing on visual art is like that ime. Not as flowery, usually, but baring little relationship to the actual work under discussion and more about just metatextual framing

Interesting to see who has fallen out of favour since they did the 2010-14 list. As others have pointed out, Ariel Pink and Sun Kil Moon are two big ones. Swans had a couple of albums in last time (including one in the top 20) and are nowhere to be seen. My Bloody Valentine were pretty high and didn't make it. I was expecting more Beach House considering how loyal they've been to them. Real Estate have taken a tumble too. I guess they're well and truly done with James Blake after he recently called them out on Twitter.
The biggest surprise on the whole list for me is just how high Anti is. I like it a lot, but does seems high and I'm still annoyed at the narrative that it was her first great album when Rated R is right there.

No need for more than one European in the top 10, Robyn stands for the entire continent.

I liked that record. I think it’s absence from spotify has made people forget about it.
I like this track as much as anything on loveless.

but most of the album is great too
maybe the one benefit of pfork's ludicrous anti-uk/eu bias is the lack of that bafflingly overrated slowdive comeback ;)

Another less surprising omission is the Big Boi album. Seems crazy to think just how popular that album was in 2010 (even winning our very own poll). I doubt we'll see it pop up in many of these lists at all.
Just noticed that they went with Sweetener as their Ariana pick. I'll never get it. It's probably her worst album.

as i said earlier btw, can we promise to give it a few years before we poll this decade
― imago, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 14:25 (four years ago) link
I think RTJ and ATCQ kinda supplanted Big Boi
― Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 14:26 (four years ago) link
I still largely ride for that Big Boi record, but it doesn't seem to have been a particularly influential one in the long run. Oh, and for a sneak peak into how much things have changed between 2010 and 2019, have a look at the thread for it and how much everyone loved the terrible rape joke in one of the skits, and think about how immediately canceled it would get him in 2019.
― triggercut, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 14:30 (four years ago) link
