we shouldn't give a shit what these wankers think. they've been the self-appointed keepers of the key for 20 years and they've done nothing with it except set up a us-centric canon of a particularly dull, zeitgeist-chasing hue. no alarms, no surprises, no point. we should let them subside into an irrelevant, embarrassing joke. no shade to anyone here who's written for them obv, you're good writers and your reviews deserve a better home

the whole 'handing out scores and BNMs by committee based on trend positioning' model is just so fucked and bullshit, that issue underlies the whole problem

think we should all be suspicious at their attempts to put together a canon, whatever anyone thinks of the actual choices

and our 00's poll isn't comparable, before anyone starts out with 'but YOU'RE building a canon!' - a) we are not a public-facing brand advertisement corporation, b) our choices will be inevitably highly personal and anti-canonical and c) our polling process is very thorough and, ideally, forces us to engage with a vast multiplicity of music before we make any decisions

i'm so perplexed that that site continues to single out kurt vile's "baby's arms"... that song is not even a particular standout on that album, much less for the entire decade. isn't it just a song that they just gave bnm as a token at the time b/c it was the first track on an (admittedly great) album w/ no real 'singles'? idgi
― dyl, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 01:05 (four years ago) link
Hahaha I hadn’t noticed that was the KV song they picked. Yeah I struggle to think that would be one of the top 200 songs this decade, let alone the best song he released. Any of his top 5 songs on spotify would be a better choice.

GvsB list is a million times better than the Pitchfork one. Really feels like the only lists worth looking paying attention to for this decade will be ones made by individuals (or in this case, a couple of people) rather than the huge groupthink branding exercise lists.

The GvB list has a more unitary aesthetic (in that odd way a stylistically diverse multi-genre list can seem unitary) but it’s correspondingly more myopic, I think.

I was putting together my favourites from the 2010s while I was trying to vote in the 2000s poll, so here are the 100 songs of the 2010s I picked, in a rough order from top to bottom. Not a curated list but hey, here it is if anyone wants to look. I haven't really paid much attention to 2019 yet so its missing this year altogether I think.

Just going through some year-by-year lists and one thing I've not seen much mention of is Dysnomia by Dawn of Midi. Great record.

^^^ I'm putting together a "best jazz of the 2010s" piece and had to think really hard about whether to include that record or not. It's fantastic, but ultimately I had to cut it to make space for things that had broader cultural resonance.

Don’t do that. Fuck “cultural resonance”, just list the best albums.

that Dawn of MIDI record is great and I've heard very little like it
some of the writing in the Tiny Mix Tapes list was excellent
