A Christmas Tale is so phenomenal. It's at the top of my list too, tho a rewatch of Gremlins pushed that one into the upper echelon alongside it.

christmas carol ‘51 is a great film, really the only version of the story i can imagine wanting to watch of my own volition.

I'd pump up 2046, of course, and Home for the Holidays has such an anxious core that in its way is the most authentic response to dealing with family.

Admittedly I've only watched 2046 the once. I barely remember it as a holiday movie.

Blast of Silence is the one that I've most cottoned to during the pandemic.

Revisited Christmas in Connecticut this year and it didnt disappoint, Sydney Greenstreet and Una O'Connor both deliver quality laffs. Skimming the wiki, I hadnt previously known that it was remade for TV in 1992, the one and only directorial outing of an obscure Austrian filmmaker named... Arnold Schwarzenegger. WTF??

I thought he also directed a Tales from the Crypt?

My big xmas discoveries of the year were Holiday Affair and Miracle on 34th St. and especially Remember the Night and The Thin Man. I also saw Christmas in Connecticut for the first time and it was cute but didn't blow me away. And some very good movies (Meet John Doe and It Happened on 5th Avenue) that have been advertised as xmas movies but were mostly only tangentially so.

Oh, also saw Curse if the Cat People for the first time! Also magnificent!

Wait wait wait, between its absence from these new lists and the results of the holiday movie poll, I'm wondering...do y'all not rate Remember the Night? Preston Sturges! Stanwyck and MacMurray! Beulah Bondi! It's genuinely affecting! And really really good!

I watched that for the first time this year too & was similarly blown away, it went right into my top tier of xmas movies. almost certain i remember morbs speaking kindly of it once or twice over the years.

I loved Christmas in Connecticut when I first discovered it, then was disappointed to be unable to find anyone that rated it apart from Morrissey. Trying to remember the name of the New Orleans noir with Gene Kelly and Deanna Durbin, maybe I already posted upthread.

Ernst Lubitsch's The Shop Around The Corner is a romantic comedy/christmas movie 4 life.

I didn't realize until I watched it for the first time last night, but the conclusion of Pandora's Box takes place on Christmas Eve. I'm not a particular fan of silent movies but I recommend this if you're living destitute in an attic with broken windows and snow coming in, and you need some cheer.

watched Last Christmas which was on BBC2 a couple of days ago and it was ok. nice shots of christmassy london but perhaps a too much Wham on the soundtrack.

interestingly the script was by emma thompson and bryony kimmings.

It's supposed to be a George Michael jukebox musical tho I agree that aspect kinda goes under the radar for much of it.

music seemed unconnected to the action, felt more like they'd licenced the title track and got a job lot of others thrown in.
