you can't line dry in a new york apartment if that's what you're talking about.

I live in a not very big flat. I use a collapsible rack

frame casual (dog latin), Friday, 4 October 2019 08:49 (four years ago) link

new york apartments also don't have dryers so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 4 October 2019 09:05 (four years ago) link

put everything in the dryer unless it's fancy tbh

Dog Latin OTM, dryers are the enemy

i've always used dryers but after a year of living with hippies i grew to appreciate line drying.

imagine my horror after putting out some clothes to dry in my sister's backyard to learn that DRYING CLOTHES OUTSIDE IS FORBIDDEN by the hoa in this shitty prefab muted pantone shade neighborhood. it might literally be the stupidest thing i have ever heard.

The way people throw out label names on this board I kinda assume most of you only have like 4 outfits in your closet and think that’s normal

This is pretty much me. All of my four/five outfits match, so they are all interchangeable: Five pairs of (mostly Outlier) pants (black, olive/gray, blue/gray, khaki, 1 pair of jeans), about 8 t-shirts with muted colors, 1 lightweight hoodie, and 3-4 button-ups. The hardest to match is the black pants and I won't be buying more of those for this reason. I hand wash my pants and certain button-ups when the weather is nice enough to line dry. (Clothes lines give a place character - fuck that HOA).

I read some article a few years ago by a woman who, for an experiment, wore the same outfit every day for I believe a year. Unsurprisingly, nobody noticed or gave a shit. I'm old, my clothes are purposely boring and highly functional. It's freeing to know that nobody is paying attention to what I wear.

I'd never heard of those before, but yes. Minus the dinosaur prints (unfortunately).

On a whim I ordered both a stitch fix box and a trunk club box. I just feel stuck with clothes shopping lately and don’t have time to devote.

Totally unrelated, does anyone have any experience with Spiewak parkas? I've been sort of eyeing them and thinking about trying to get one off ebay before the winter.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 20:41 (four years ago) link

three weeks pass...

i need boots for the winter. i am looking for something fairly rugged that can hold up against daily exposure to snow, ice, salt but also something i can just wear all day that won't feel too heavy? like i don't want something like the 1964 sorels, which seem like good snow boots but would be something i'd want to change out of as soon as i get to work

marcos, Monday, 4 November 2019 20:17 (four years ago) link

duck boots bro

lag∞n, Monday, 4 November 2019 20:19 (four years ago) link

i can wear whatever i want at work so it's not that they need to look "professional" but more that i wan't something that is sturdy enough for a midwestern winter but still, like, wearable in most environments

marcos, Monday, 4 November 2019 20:21 (four years ago) link

the bean boots? xp

marcos, Monday, 4 November 2019 20:21 (four years ago) link

I just bought some timberland waterproof hikers for the purpose of doubling as actual hiking boots and snow boots. They're pretty lightweight and comfortable, maybe not as stylish as Sorels though.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 4 November 2019 20:22 (four years ago) link

i wear bean boots and thick socks during winter nyc commutes, never had a problem.

adam, Monday, 4 November 2019 20:23 (four years ago) link

i have some heavier duty lacrosse duck boots but yeah the bean boots sound like they fit yr criteria

lag∞n, Monday, 4 November 2019 20:25 (four years ago) link

+they r cute

lag∞n, Monday, 4 November 2019 20:26 (four years ago) link

I had a pair of waterproof hiking boots that I also used as snow boots for like 8-9 years. The last pair of snow boots I bought were north face -- I was forced to buy them last minute as a blizzard came into town -- and they were garbage and only lasted me a season.

i like bean boots but i dont think i want that camel color

marcos, Monday, 4 November 2019 20:28 (four years ago) link

oh i wait see they come in a darker color too

marcos, Monday, 4 November 2019 20:29 (four years ago) link

hiking boots are so short tho what do u do when theres more than like 4 inches of snow xp

lag∞n, Monday, 4 November 2019 20:29 (four years ago) link

I guess I'm not really doing a lot of hardcore trekking around in the snow, hasn't been a problem. Jeans and thick socks.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 4 November 2019 20:31 (four years ago) link

I've never owned proper snow boots and basically wear doc martens (or older knee high boots, am not a man) when it snows in NYC, even to shovel.

Yerac, Monday, 4 November 2019 20:32 (four years ago) link

the cool thing abt having a big rugged pair of boots is u can just walk whereever u want without worrying about it, like those huge icey puddles at intersections in ny u just power through them

these r my big beautiful boots

yea it is a feeling of invincibility that i need during the winter

marcos, Monday, 4 November 2019 20:42 (four years ago) link

I would like all of the form of the duck boot with none of the functionality xp

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 4 November 2019 20:43 (four years ago) link

Man that reminds me I bought those stupid ugly totes rubbers that go over your shoes a few years ago bc I have to wear dress shoes sometimes for work and I NEVER could bring myself to put them on.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 4 November 2019 20:44 (four years ago) link

honestly now that I drive to work 99% of the time though I barely need any weather gear at all, I could probably just roll into the parking garage in flip flops and a tee, would only be cold for 20 seconds.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 4 November 2019 20:45 (four years ago) link

i like these ones, very cozy

though duck boots might be too] rugged for me? i think i want more leather and less rubber

marcos, Monday, 4 November 2019 20:53 (four years ago) link

the rubber is so good tho! its waterproof

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Monday, 4 November 2019 21:43 (four years ago) link

I came up with a sartorial rule of thumb (which I have not lived by perfectly):

If you wore something in your youth, which was in fashion at the time, you should not wear that thing again when it comes back into fashion bc u r too old.

cf, I dunno, boat shoes

open to feedback
