I really like the songs on this that I like (voted "Lovalot" but could have picked "Meds and Feds", "Tell Me Why", or any of the singles except "Steppin' Up") but the other songs are BAD and I never want to listen to them.

brigadier pudding (DJP), Thursday, 3 October 2019 15:58 (four years ago) link

Space, god I love that tune, true to its title

sleeve, Thursday, 3 October 2019 15:59 (four years ago) link

love all of it, including bonus tracks

maffew12, Thursday, 3 October 2019 15:59 (four years ago) link

It does have eek moments.

"Illygirl" too. This album.

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 3 October 2019 16:00 (four years ago) link

fuck it, teqkilla. that's the most fun to blare. "eeeeeeeeek oooo"

maffew12, Thursday, 3 October 2019 16:01 (four years ago) link

I think Caps Lock if we're counting the extra tracks there's such a great hungover vibe to it, one of the *weariest* songs i've ever heard. Otherwise Tell Me Why.

piscesx, Thursday, 3 October 2019 16:25 (four years ago) link

such highs and lows

change display name (Jordan), Thursday, 3 October 2019 16:27 (four years ago) link

what are these lows and eeks?

a top album of the decade, and her best

maffew12, Thursday, 3 October 2019 16:29 (four years ago) link

I like this album a lot, maybe my favorite of hers even if other albums had better/bigger singles.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 3 October 2019 16:51 (four years ago) link

I just showed the Martin Rev + a google of Mayas Letterman appearance to friends the other night. Unlistenable and totally amazing

Oh yeah, "Illygirl" and "Internet Connection" are fire

brigadier pudding (DJP), Thursday, 3 October 2019 16:52 (four years ago) link

what are these lows and eeks?

"It Takes a Muscle" and "It Iz What It Iz", for starters

brigadier pudding (DJP), Thursday, 3 October 2019 16:54 (four years ago) link

aw I love "It Takes A Muscle", fake dancehall vibe and all

sleeve, Thursday, 3 October 2019 16:57 (four years ago) link

we could have that discussion while we play some Wii

gonna bring this album to my Sunday DJ gig, thanx all

counter-argument: nah

brigadier pudding (DJP), Thursday, 3 October 2019 17:06 (four years ago) link

Steppin Up is one of the gutsiest opening songs on any pop record. Ya, just gonna start things off with a little power drill joint (ya ya, after the whole Google's connected to the...skit,omg MIA predicted the internet, in 2010....)

maffew12, Thursday, 3 October 2019 17:06 (four years ago) link

counter-argument: nah

― brigadier pudding (DJP), Thursday, October 3, 2019 10:06 AM (one minute ago) bookmarkflaglink

my counterargument is i'm voting for it

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 October 2019 17:08 (four years ago) link

the verse melody is one of the prettiest on the record too

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 October 2019 17:09 (four years ago) link

bought this cheap ages ago, added to the digital archive, and then forgot all about it as i did not really get it.
but now, this is totally hitting the spot.
ta for the nudge.
the bass production is insane, even at low volumes my walls are vibrating.

maffew12, Thursday, 3 October 2019 17:19 (four years ago) link

Steppin Up is one of the gutsiest opening songs on any pop record.

The drill part is great, the whole opening is great... and then it all just gets flabby and indistinct and tries to paper over the flaws with about 5000 decibels of bass

Matangi does the delirious chaos thing much, much better all the way through

brigadier pudding (DJP), Thursday, 3 October 2019 17:30 (four years ago) link

sure, this album has like 10 songs that are better, and that's nuts.

Matangi is my second fave of hers. it's nuts that her first two get all the attention. Of course they are also wonderful.

maffew12, Thursday, 3 October 2019 17:32 (four years ago) link

agreed that maya and matangi are her best records

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 October 2019 17:33 (four years ago) link

Kala
Matangi
Arular
MAYA

I don't know AIM at all

brigadier pudding (DJP), Thursday, 3 October 2019 17:50 (four years ago) link

aim is unfortunately extremely dull

american bradass (BradNelson), Thursday, 3 October 2019 17:53 (four years ago) link

Kala
Arula
MAYA
Matangi
AIM

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 3 October 2019 17:54 (four years ago) link

good songs since Matangi: Swords, Borders, Go Off, Bird Song, Finally, Visa, POWA

maffew12, Thursday, 3 October 2019 18:14 (four years ago) link

and tries to paper over the flaws with about 5000 decibels of bass

as i said earlier.
became clear as the rest of the album played out it was a one off re that side of things re the production.
not going to lie though, i did enjoy it.

mark e, Thursday, 3 October 2019 18:25 (four years ago) link

the entire toolbox on that one

maffew12, Thursday, 3 October 2019 18:27 (four years ago) link

Went with "Born Free," but really, it could've been maybe five other songs. Love this record.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 3 October 2019 18:52 (four years ago) link

XXXO and Lovalot are my two faves by a mile, maybe Lovalot edges it a bit because of the glottal stop <3

Born Free is great as well but I HATE the video so that taints the song for me unfortunately.

gyac, Thursday, 3 October 2019 18:59 (four years ago) link

I was going to say that, despite enjoying it, this is my least favorite of her albums, but then I realized she has an album called AIM that I have zero recollection of.

Lots of great tracks to choose from. I love all the crazy sound effects and bass on Steppin Up. Teqkilla very accurately simulates the state of mind she's describing, perhaps too well. That synth stab is like a fucking ice pick to the skull. Space is indeed appropriately spacey. And yes, the bonus tracks are surprisingly strong. Today though I'm feeling Born Free the most.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 3 October 2019 19:12 (four years ago) link

AIM has couple of decent cuts; like this

piscesx, Thursday, 3 October 2019 21:13 (four years ago) link

move on.
this thread aint about AIM.

mark e, Thursday, 3 October 2019 22:23 (four years ago) link

The sound of this album is so harsh and claustrophobic that I just find it unpleasant to listen to. Even the poppier moments ("XXXO," "Tell Me Why") come off as sarcastic; there's none of the exuberance of Kala.

Maria Edgelord (cryptosicko), Thursday, 3 October 2019 23:33 (four years ago) link

Interesting. "Sarcastic" has never crossed my mind with MIA. It's her most varied album for sure. I think that's why I like it so much. I like all of her modes ....(til she kind of fell asleep on half of AIM but nevermind!)

maffew12, Thursday, 3 October 2019 23:59 (four years ago) link

Didn’t connect with this at all when it came out; picked up a copy a few weeks ago & it really hit the spot. Either my standards have slipped or it was just really good and I was dumb.
