yeah, full of excellent moments, it just felt underwhelming for a season premiere.

btw i have a full-blown crush on chris baker, which just goes onto the pile of crushes i have on the performers in this unfairly attractive show

like, if you are bi this show is properly unfair

I was very glad the boring lady turned out to be a demon, as I was already worried about that (good) joke wearing thin over any more episodes

Simon H., Monday, 30 September 2019 01:50 (four years ago) link

I dunno; I’m not big on doing the reboot-cycle on Chidi for a third(or more) time

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Thursday, 3 October 2019 18:57 (four years ago) link

Not sure why, but I feel I’m going to be v disappointed in the series if this last season doesn’t have an emancipatory aspect to it. They’ve covered both moral development but also how an archaic & sclerotic moral system literally dooms everyone within it, and it feels like the final critical task to destroy the illegitimate system and liberate both themselves and humanity.

It seemed like they were giving hints about that at the end of the last season with the “No one is going to save you and fix things, Michael, you have to do it yourself” bits

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Thursday, 3 October 2019 19:05 (four years ago) link

Also how it is I’ve been watching this show for years and never twigged to the fact that Ted Danson’s character not shares both name and job as creator/architect as the show’s creator/showrunner?

This sounds right.

I made my cousin watch the first couple of episodes (s1) - did Chidi have his teeth fixed at some point? They look different!

two weeks pass...

I enjoyed this episode - even if the shapelessness of this season is a mess.

Yeah it feels like they knew how they wanted to wrap it up and could have done it in a couple of eps, but are having to stretch it out because they were commissioned by season.

So, your CV says you're a (checks notes) DJ and stand-up comedian (aldo), Saturday, 26 October 2019 14:36 (four years ago) link

They requested one episode more than previous seasons

now let's play big lunch take little lunch (sic), Saturday, 26 October 2019 14:39 (four years ago) link

Odd then that it feels like it's treading water.

I feel like all the seasons have been shapeless since about halfway through the second season.

This year feels a lot *funnier* than last year though so I'm happy

Chuck_Tatum, Saturday, 26 October 2019 15:06 (four years ago) link

Yeah I feel like the "let's roam around before the reveal of what this season is actually about" period is longer than usual.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 26 October 2019 15:12 (four years ago) link

it’s still v funny but dramatically it’s gotten a little saccharine and a lot repetitive. how many more crises of confidence scenes can i take

american bradass (BradNelson), Saturday, 26 October 2019 17:16 (four years ago) link

also you couldn’t pay me to be interested in eleanor and chidi’s relationship

american bradass (BradNelson), Saturday, 26 October 2019 17:18 (four years ago) link

however i'm still enjoying myself so whatever

american bradass (BradNelson), Saturday, 26 October 2019 17:27 (four years ago) link

It seems like the funniest lines this season are almost all Jason and to some extent Derek, I feel they're kind of wasting actual funniest cast member Janet

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 26 October 2019 17:30 (four years ago) link

treading water otm

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 26 October 2019 17:30 (four years ago) link

im not gonna complain. ted danson is an absolute gift. 72 and crushing every line.

love ted danson as vicky

imago, Monday, 11 November 2019 22:11 (four years ago) link

i see lots of complaints about this season upthread already but i feel like this show lost the plot story-wise somewhere ... after season 2? i don't know exactly. but it's gotten so convoluted and based on special effects and moving from crazy place to crazy place. there's just too much going on now and it's too BIG in what it's trying to say. i still watch it for the LOLs and bc i keep hoping they'll get back on track. also how did they essentially take chidi out of the entire season and not tahani who actually sucks.

na (NA), Monday, 18 November 2019 21:58 (four years ago) link

i feel like this show lost the plot story-wise somewhere ... after season 2?

correct

still really enjoyed the most recent two episodes of this season, it was nice to feel like there were stakes again

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 18 November 2019 22:01 (four years ago) link

yeah this last season (and change) has mostly been a drag on the conceptual level

Simon H., Monday, 18 November 2019 22:19 (four years ago) link

yes and yes. it's out of gas but not so out of gas i'm not willing to give it about two or three more hours of my time.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 18 November 2019 22:36 (four years ago) link

the jokes are still good, so that helps.

i am curious to see their answer to why humanity should continue if human society is unable to produce good people and only removing ppl from society and prodding them to be better by angelic consorts works

chassidis has good answers to this question imho fwiw first that to do good in this world (which includes the society into which we're born) is a very difficult task and so we should celebrate every act of good that is done even when compromised (if nothing else in the inevitable consent we all give to the status quo through participation in it) and second that the purpose of creation is to repair a flawed world and so you shouldn't worry about earning points in the world to come anyway the whole purpose of creation is to labor in this world. or in a general sense Rabbi Tarfon taught: "It is not your responsibility to finish the work [of perfecting the world], but you are not free to desist from it either" (Pirkai, Avos 2:16).

what's the closest we have to a chassidic tv comedy iyo

imago, Monday, 18 November 2019 23:00 (four years ago) link

lol idk i'd have to think about it but my first impulse was to say neon genesis evangelion which def shares some themes and also prominently features a sefirah tree in its opening credits

wasdnuos (abanana), Tuesday, 19 November 2019 23:36 (four years ago) link

only two episodes left, right?

akm, Tuesday, 19 November 2019 23:45 (four years ago) link

chidi was missed, I wondered if this overlapped with the filming of Midsommar at all

akm, Tuesday, 19 November 2019 23:45 (four years ago) link

Have found this season a little flat, after getting used to them constantly reworking the surroundings in previous seasons, and a lot of the jokes haven’t really worked for me. Still it’s very likable, and Jason’s “that’s how I got my nickname” gag a couple episodes back was perfectly delivered.

JoeStork, Wednesday, 20 November 2019 00:24 (four years ago) link

Still 6 more episodes, aren't there? Still enjoying it, but it's become a bit enervated.

Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Wednesday, 20 November 2019 02:48 (four years ago) link

this week's episode was crazy good

american bradass (BradNelson), Saturday, 23 November 2019 03:15 (four years ago) link

Agreed. Chidi at peace may turn out to be my favorite Chidi.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 23 November 2019 05:39 (four years ago) link

funny I found this one felt like a giant retreading waste of time lol

Simon H., Saturday, 23 November 2019 06:31 (four years ago) link

Yeah me too, I feel like the show is floundering and has lost its emotional center at this point. But the jokes are still good!
