'Paper rings' is now reminding me of "You're the one that I want".

swift doing a stripped down singer-songwriter album would be great and healy and swift working together would also be great but i don't know if those together would be the best version of either of those things. like i'd think probably the best use of healy's talents on a swift album would be gorgeous synth textures everywhere idk

well i wldn't exactly expect him to stick to what he says he wants to do, so

In my imagination, the Swift-Healy team up results in the arena rock album State of Grace hinted at.

cpl593H, Friday, 27 September 2019 11:22 (four years ago) link

I don't even think Healy believes he'd produce a 'stripped-down' Swift album.

It would be great if they did a Crossroads-like show like the Def Leppard one.

Real nice “False God” on SNL. (Who’s the saxa-ma-phonist; is he “somebody”?)

Not that I've watched a ton of these, but this might be the best Tiny Desk Concert i've seen:

"the man" and "death by a thousand cuts" really sound so much better acoustic. glad she has good taste in her own work too, declaring "all too well" to be the song she's most proud of

ufo, Wednesday, 16 October 2019 12:48 (four years ago) link

Really nice versions (the bridge of "Lover" is still a sore thumb even in the solo piano rendition, though!)

drunk on hot toddies (morrisp), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 18:57 (four years ago) link

LOL that she sees online lists of people ranking her songs... send her ILM polls

drunk on hot toddies (morrisp), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 19:05 (four years ago) link

we should do a taylor poll? maybe it's too early. plenty of songs though

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 19:06 (four years ago) link

Almost every song in this album save the singles has been my favorite at some point. Right now it’s “Cruel Summer”, with her singing almost screaming at several moments. It sounds like another iteration of “Out of the Woods” (after “Getaway Car”) but each iteration offers something different (i.e. I’m not ranking them).

Heartily agree with most of the above but really non-acoustic "the man" and "thousand cuts" are no slouches either, esp. the latter with that beautiful garsonistic cascading piano lines.

being able to prevent her from performing her old songs at televised events seems like a weird loophole

ufo, Friday, 15 November 2019 00:44 (four years ago) link

It is weird (and her directive to hound other artists also a little weird)... but who knows, I guess.

They are undoubtedly scum. But Taylor Swift isn't the first pop star to sign a dodgy contract and she won't be the last.

Also, she already has more money than she could ever spend, so we're not exactly talking about Morris Levy ripping off Frankie Lymon here.

This Variety article says, “Normally, performing older material live when the master recordings are held by someone else shouldn’t require permission”; and they’ve reached out to Big Machine for comment. I’m on pins & needles...

paris geller spinoff pitch (morrisp), Friday, 15 November 2019 01:46 (four years ago) link

i think the issue is theyre claiming the televised nature of the performances would count as a recording, idk if that would hold up in court or if there's any precedent

ufo, Friday, 15 November 2019 02:22 (four years ago) link

Yeah, definitely seems like the best way to deal with this dispute is to air your grievances in public and whip your insane fans up into a frenzy to abuse, humiliate and drag anyone who is on the other side of it. As if the inevitable consequence to it isn't going to be death threats to them and their families. Like, Scooter Braun's latest instagram post is about a friend who just died of cancer and all the comments are people piling on to abusing him. Death threats already starting.

i think it's possible to think someone is a total scumbag and also think that it's not super great that a hugely popular musician is giving their fans licence to harass and doxx someone with very young children

monotony, Friday, 15 November 2019 03:54 (four years ago) link

J0rdan S., Friday, 15 November 2019 03:56 (four years ago) link

I’m shocked that a famous person would take to twitter to air out their grievances

omar little, Friday, 15 November 2019 04:04 (four years ago) link

I don’t think it’s too common for a star of her stature to “activate” her stanbase in this manner (if it was, this wouldn’t be news)

paris geller spinoff pitch (morrisp), Friday, 15 November 2019 04:39 (four years ago) link

Yeah, there's airing your grievances and then there's literally having a direct call to action and saying "So this is where I'm asking for your help. Please let Scott Borchetta and Scooter Braun know how you feel about this", and then also asking them to put pressure on the other artists managed by Scooter, knowing full well what that means in terms of how her fans will respond. Her fans aren't sitting there typing well reasoned e-mails on business ethics and artistic ownership. They're frothing and baying for blood because someone didn't respect their queen, which is exactly what her wounded narcissistic ego wants.

Step back for a second and look at this whole dumb situation and it's one insanely wealthy and privileged multi-millionaire wielding her social power to unleash an attack on another two insanely wealthy and privileged multi-millionaires. If only people with influence put this amount of passion into something that actually mattered to the world.

triggercut, Friday, 15 November 2019 05:02 (four years ago) link

i agree, scooter braun should give the masters to taylor and put all the money he was going to spend on them into something that matters more to the world

maybe we should hook this thread up with the Literary Clusterfucks 2013 thread

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Friday, 15 November 2019 14:39 (four years ago) link

Swift’s hope, she said, was that these artists might “talk some sense into the men who are exercising tyrannical control over someone who just wants to play the music she wrote.”

surprised to see ilxors defend this self-pitying bs

groovemaaan, Friday, 15 November 2019 14:42 (four years ago) link

Yay for self-pity, but sending fans after other artists seem problematic?

Borchetta 'n' Braun denies the allegations: https://pitchfork.com/news/taylor-swifts-ex-label-denies-her-tv-licensing-claims/ Though not totally convincing.

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 15 November 2019 14:46 (four years ago) link

I think Taylor stans have been letting Borchetta and Braun know how they feel for quite awhile now.

Braun was definitely swarmed for a few tweets after Taylor initially complained about the Big Machine deal, but I don’t think there was doxxing and death threats like were being reported y’day

Just last year, Taylor was granted a restraining order against an obsessed fan with weapons; she knows that she (like every superstar) has mentally ill fans who may be violent

Also, one of the “several other artists” managed by Braun suffered an attack at a concert a few years back (not aimed at her personally)

Don’t want to make a mtn out of what is hopefully a molehill, but Taylor’s tweet doesn’t seem very responsible for all these reasons.

Did Taylor sign the contract or not? She either signed it and needs to shut up because those are the terms she agreed to, or she didn't sign it, and these guys need to be held accountable. Which is it? Did she not actually sign the contract?
