OMG, me and my brothers were just reminiscing about these a few months ago. They couldn't remember what they were called, just that I used to get old back issues from somewhere weird like a Woolworth when we were kids. I was thinking the same thing too, though. Like, how are these not digitized somewhere?

I'm sure I still have a bunch at my mom's somewhere. If I have the bravery to dig them up.

Also, don't forget Hot Dog (their periodical for the youngest of the yunguns)!

Continuing proof we are the same person, OL. Please do dig those up and scan em! There's a few on the internet but not many.

Also also: "Peanut Butter" and "Wow" for the younger set.

I loved these. One of my older cousins had a big stack of them. I also used to buy issues at the Woolworth at the mall- I believe they were 10 cents each. I think I still have a few issues of Dynamite- Hot Dog possibly-Bananas less likely. In general, I think magazines are one of the things which we are most strongly encouraged to get rid of, but which I most wish I had kept.

Hot tip I didn't pick up on until decades later: R.L. Stine was (I believe) EIC of at least Bananas. Jovial Bob Stine, as John Holmstrom used to refer to him in his strips.

this were the biggest, biggest deal at my grade school. I think I had a Bananas subscription -- I was really fond of it because it was the more "mature" of the two.

basically anyone on this board who has still issues of dynamite or bananas is obliged to scan them in and post them here is how i break it down to an extent
bananas is, strangely, even harder to find and feels more like a dream of possible puberty

I remember that the Dynamite cover story of "The Bee Gees vs The Beatles" set off a good 5-10 min debate in my 4th (or 5th?)-grade classroom.

who won

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 25 September 2019 21:14 (four years ago) link

I was banned from watching You Can't Do That on Television (which I watched anyway because rebel) but I remember thinking that all those issues of Bananas my mom let me buy with abandon were a helluva lot more subversive than anything Moose and the gang were up to.

Welcome To My Lifemare (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 25 September 2019 21:20 (four years ago) link

xp We were like 9 and had no conception of pop music's past so the Bee Gees enjoyed a decisive level of popular support due to being hot at the moment, coming off of Saturday Night Fever

There was another one of these mags called Pizzazz wasn’t there? Did I dream that during a chicken pox fever?

valet doberman (Jon not Jon), Wednesday, 25 September 2019 22:53 (four years ago) link

Pizzazz was a Marvel title; kind of their stab at being a brand x (ecch?) dynamite. i have all those; could post some images if it's of interest.
Stein's wife was another person on the Dynamite staff if I recall correctly... and, more interestingly, Dynamite turns out to have been an early creation of one-time DC Comics editor in chief Jenette Kahn.

I looked it up and from what I can tell Stine actually wrote the bulk of the material in Bananas. So y'all might've been R.L. Stine fans before it was cool and didn't even know it.

I'm an early Xer, so I only read Dynamite during it's first few years—then moved on to Starlogs and Fangorias—but what I remember most about them are the "origins of super heroes" reprint strips that ran—frequently?—in every issue? I can't remember. I had no idea that it ran until 1992! I've always thought of it as quintessentially 70's.

Oh, someone corrects me here. It was a series called "Superheroes Confidential."

Françoise, Laurel, and Hardy (K. Rrosé), Thursday, 26 September 2019 19:57 (four years ago) link

Super Hero Confidential ran both DC _and_ Marvel comics; I have no idea how they pulled that off.
