i can't figure out the reasoning behind the LA choice unless there was only one vote for that state

ciderpress, Thursday, 31 October 2019 23:14 (four years ago) link

Would say maybe Minnetonka or Excelsior over Edina for MN, in that genre.

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Thursday, 31 October 2019 23:34 (four years ago) link

I spent a week in Edina one night, so I'm completely on board with that one.

Council Bluffs had to be a hard #2 behind Cedar Rapids.

How Jeff City can come out ahead of Branson, Ferguson or Raytown must really say something. (I've never had any problems there.)

Some people say my town is less than desirable due to the fact that on some nights, you can go outside in your yard and catch a big whiff of Pine Bluff.

And I don't know what the fuck Turkey Creek is, but the fact that Bastrop could top any of the cities I mentioned above shows you how rigged Louisiana's results must've been. Seriously. We used to take family trips to Monroe (which has to be in the Top 10) and Bastrop would wake me up, it smelled so bad. One of those gray towns where everything's made of aluminum and there's always the sound of a diesel engine rumbling in the distance.

Poolesville, MD isn’t bad at all

tobo73, Friday, 1 November 2019 02:09 (four years ago) link

Spokane kind of rules, no way it’s the worst city in WA. The place everyone shat on was the Tri-Cities area so Richland, Pasco and Kennewick probably split the vote if you were using actual city names as qualifiers.

there's way, way worse places in oregon than salem. salem's actually a pretty okay town these days!

I'm still not crazy about their criteria for "private employers" there.

*Special note about Iowa, in which I've likely spent at least a good 100 hours in, covering every minute of the day, without having actually ever stopped for the night.

pplains, Friday, 8 November 2019 02:16 (four years ago) link

'counties i've been to' would be amazing

mookieproof, Friday, 8 November 2019 02:18 (four years ago) link

I've tried, but there's too much guesswork.

It does make for a pretty good argument against the electoral college, seeing the states you've been to vs the actual part of the states you've been to.

pumpkin pie is an atrocity with the appearance and consistency of baby shit

Suggest Banshee (Hadrian VIII), Sunday, 17 November 2019 20:09 (four years ago) link

Ok but I have lived in Virginia for 40+ years and never seen a lemon pie served on Thanksgiving. 8 years in Missouri I saw exactly zero blueberry pies served on Thanksgiving. Blueberries are not even remotely seasonal, people!

The pies they are not talking about are pumpkin and apple (both seasonal and classic). Of those pies, only pecan pie belongs in a Thanksgiving tableau.

Fourth of July? Sure, bring your cherry, key lime, blueberry pies. They are appropriate then. But not Thanksgiving, sheesh.

OK, but just go to the grocery store. They have food all year round.

gonna have to blow the midwest whistle on several of those states, i'm afraid.

indeed being a beach boy c. 1965 would seem to skew these findings

This map gives you a rough sense of all the ways U.S. land is used. Much of U.S. land serves specific purposes, such as the 2 million acres devoted to golf courses or the 3 million acres for airports.https://t.co/WkDPqg3rwv pic.twitter.com/FUfKYZhy2L
