I feel like most of these are extremely obvious (at least to me), but just wanting to make sure people don't forget to vote for New Amerykah Part One (the album of the decade), Aaliyah (the album of the decade), Overpowered (the album of the decade), Complex Simplicity (the album of the decade), Blackout (the album of the decade), and, of course, Voodoo (the album of the decade)

monotony, Monday, 23 September 2019 23:12 (four years ago) link

anyway as you can see my list making is going extremely well and I'm not having any trouble at all putting things in order

Statues >>>> Overpowered though

ufo, Monday, 23 September 2019 23:17 (four years ago) link

Mordy, Monday, 23 September 2019 23:29 (four years ago) link

still not sure about the best songs, but the hands-down best song name: "Dress Sexy at My Funeral"

ppl who don’t vote for aaliyah clown themselves

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 24 September 2019 02:06 (four years ago) link

I have my albums just about ready. Trying to cut my tracks list down is an actual nightmare.

kitchen person, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 05:25 (four years ago) link

tough deciding whether i'm going to vote for 4 black dice albums or 5 black dice albums

ogmor, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 11:21 (four years ago) link

You should check this out, Pom and LJ.

I will, thanks. It's been on my list of pending albums for a while now.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 11:25 (four years ago) link

Will listen to that, but for now, let's keep this thread clutter-free (i.e. no Youtubes pls)

lurker of chalice is the same dude as leviathan, he is a deeply fucked up person but that record is p good yeah

Simon H., Tuesday, 24 September 2019 17:12 (four years ago) link

I'm almost ready to submit, but Monotony has got me thinking that I might need room for that wonderful Teedra Moses album.

track campaign: Cortney Tidwell - Don't Let Stars Keep Us Tangled Up (Ewan Pearson's Objects In Space mix)

probably the greatest thing i've ever heard

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 24 September 2019 18:12 (four years ago) link

I sort of assumed everyone had heard that already? but yes extremely good

Simon H., Tuesday, 24 September 2019 18:24 (four years ago) link

i mean me too but i can’t assume anything on ilm

american bradass (BradNelson), Tuesday, 24 September 2019 18:24 (four years ago) link

Don't Let The Stars is one of the songs that I wasn't aware of until it place in the 2005-09 poll. It's gorgeous.

Dan Worsley, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 19:15 (four years ago) link

if nashwan turns up with evidence that november 2009 was actually in this decade though, we've got problems

imago, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 19:20 (four years ago) link

i got a bit more selective but still ended up with 127 albums on my first pass

ciderpress, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 19:28 (four years ago) link

shortlist of 200 nearly ..

campaigning wise I hope people dont forget the albums by Isis and Agalloch on the noms list.

Also Yob - Catharsis which is the best album they made in the OG incarnation if not the best in both.

Zombi - Spirit Animal
And Emeralds - What Happened?
for the non metal synth fans on ILM

Not to rain on anybody's parade but this:

Kaija Saariaho / Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra / Esa-Pekka Salonen / Kronos Quartet ‎– Du cristal …à la fumée / Sept papillons / Nymphéa

…is a reissue of a 1993 album with Sept papillons tacked on.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 20:19 (four years ago) link

that one's a bit controversial

imago, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 20:21 (four years ago) link

it was released in iceland in 1999, don't think it had a global release until 2000/2001

ciderpress, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 20:21 (four years ago) link

that's a totally acceptable year of impact thing imo

imago, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 20:26 (four years ago) link

pitchfork, rolling stone, et al have already run 00s lists with it in there i think it's grandfathered in now

ciderpress, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 20:27 (four years ago) link

Yeah we discussed Agaetis Byrjun earlier, din't get a release outside of Iceland until mid 2000.

This is hard. My longlist was about 200 albums. Cutting it down to 100 was not a big problem, but the hurting has def started.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 20:46 (four years ago) link

I've got about 100 too at this point and am afraid to go any further.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 20:52 (four years ago) link

voted. had the albums list already like 99% thought out. winged the tracks voting but I feel strongly about it. lots of nostalgia when putting these together. thanks a lot for setting this all up.

Emeralds - What Happened?

well worth your time if you dig floaty space synth action with a bit of grit in the mix

sleeve, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 22:03 (four years ago) link

I’ll put some information on some of the more niche stuff I’ll be voting for up in phases. A couple of tracks:

Kapela Ze Wsi Warszawa- Maydow - Polish drone-folk. KZWW were early participants in Poland’s roots revival scene, taking near-forgotten trad melodies / styles at risk of disappearing in a country perceived as being indifferent to its cultural heritage and incorporating them into new songs. A lot of their stuff is fairly jaunty but Maydow has a strong folk-horror vibe that may appeal to fans of Espers or the Wicker Man idk.

Kasia Stankiewicz - Francuzeczka - I have vivid memories of going to Poland for the first time, getting to the hotel, switching on the TV and the video for this sprawling electro-pop marvel playing. I’ve been transfixed ever since.

The Konki Duet - Il Fait Tout Gris Released slightly before the Nouvelle Vague album but with a similar concept, it’s a French cello cover of Fade To Grey. There isn’t the same sense of ironic detachment you get with Olivier Libeaux’s project though, it’s played dead straight and works wonderfully.

Lady Saw - Five Star Hotel Probably a minor entry in her immense discography but the combination of Mario C’s bouncy Bomb-A-Drop riddim and Saw’s lyrics about precisely which hotels she’d let suitors take her to is enormous fun.

ShariVari, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 22:13 (four years ago) link

in the rollout the most popular version should be listed with a breakdown of votes for other versions.

i understand that the votes of the different versions would be consolidated. that seems a fair compromise then.

Arghh I'm away for a congress in Edinburgh and will miss the roll-out then this week -_-

Will catch up and bombard thread afterwards.

have been sent the non-merging version. there are TWO casualties in fact. difficult decision and i have to make it now so tt has the right stats for the images...

If they are different then they are different

saer, Sunday, 13 October 2019 16:46 (four years ago) link

^^ truth

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 13 October 2019 16:47 (four years ago) link

If you merge and show the breakdown then people can adjust in their heads if they feel it's an injustice? Harder to do it the other way round.

Thank You (Fattekin Mice Elf Control Again) (Noel Emits), Sunday, 13 October 2019 16:48 (four years ago) link

I think they should be r
counted separately, but the merge and show numbers approach is a good compromise.

beard papa, Sunday, 13 October 2019 16:54 (four years ago) link

OKAY

a decision has been reached, albeit a painful one

We will go by ILX convention and merge numbers

the pros very slightly outweigh the cons

believe me, I wanted to throw this convention in the trash as (having listened to one of the potential casualties) the remix was absolutely nothing like the original, but when it came down to it, the fact I hadn't specified beforehand that remixes would be counted separately was the clincher

we will hopefully begin rollouts tomorrow, with maybe even a few tonight if tt's ready...

just like in the noughties!

britain's secret sauce (seandalai), Sunday, 13 October 2019 17:31 (four years ago) link

(never heard of a cover version included on a single)

I can immediately think of three examples

although I’m opposed to any Lu Contless version of Mr Brightside placing, merging and noting is the least damaging option given the lack of clarity. iirc the Friendly Fires version of Paris wasn’t nominated, so we’ll be spared that particular travesty of merging

now let's play big lunch take little lunch (sic), Sunday, 13 October 2019 17:42 (four years ago) link

i think trying to carefully preserve the integrity of the ideal object doesn't acknowledge how music functions. all sound is queer. i want to specifically vote for a milli as played through my old desktop pc speakers

I probably won't read an article with that title but it is possible to recognize the mutability and subjectivity of sonic experience (and to have taught remixing for a few years) and still think that remixes should be recognized as distinct pieces of work in their own right. No beef with imago's decision, though.

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Sunday, 13 October 2019 17:55 (four years ago) link

The problem is knowing the names of things. We make our own prisons. In Greggs I say "one of those"

saer, Sunday, 13 October 2019 17:57 (four years ago) link

Would anyone object to us doing 10 tonight and 10 tomorrow?

imago, Sunday, 13 October 2019 18:04 (four years ago) link

I didn't vote in this, just was not in touch enough with the broad spread of music in that decade, but super excited to see the results and learn!

Er, just clicked on the link now and saw that that article was written by an ilxor I respect and one of whose albums I voted for. Sorry about that:(. If it helps, I was feeling annoyed by the argument on here more than anything else.

Also can I be churlish and point out that 'The Magical World of the Strands' was relaased in 1998 and definitely doesn't count here?

My mistake, no idea how I didn't check. But won't matter in the overall results because no one else will vote for it.
