TPAB for sure, Lemonade also

flappy bird, Monday, 23 September 2019 18:53 (four years ago) link

I doubt that.

Seems like Lemonade's stock is falling, at least as an album. Read a couple recent things about people saying that it really doesn't hold up well outside of its timeframe and without the visual element, I don't think that will place nearly as highly as it may once have.

Calling Have One On Me for top 10

J. Sam, Monday, 23 September 2019 19:26 (four years ago) link

where does Emotion land?

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Monday, 23 September 2019 19:29 (four years ago) link

#79

J. Sam, Monday, 23 September 2019 19:30 (four years ago) link

I'd guess:

1 TPAB
2 Lemonade
3 Blonde
4 Have One On Me
5 Lana Del Rey
6 Sufjan
7 Jai Paul
8 Kanye
9 King Krule
10 Vampire Weekend

11-20 Big Thief, Solange, DAMN, Bon Iver, Mitski, Beach House, D'Angelo, Robyn, The Suburbs, Danny Brown, RTJ. I don't think Visions will make top 20. I also don't know what I'm typing about or why I'm thinking about this.

yeah I think is is correct. what about the Solange album? what is the top ranking album by a woman going to be?

flappy bird, Monday, 23 September 2019 19:39 (four years ago) link

Lemonade will definitely be top 10 and I'd be very surprised if it's not top 5.

FGTI's list looks pretty good though I think that's definitely too high for King Krule, I would expect to see something like Solange or Tame Impala outrank him.

Evans on Hammond (evol j), Monday, 23 September 2019 19:43 (four years ago) link

wow, forgot about Blonde- yeah, that'll definitely be up there. idk about Sufjan (didn't Mt. Eerie one-up him with his grief albums?), and while I love HOOM and think it'll place, I can't see it being in the top 10, it's been too long and while JN is still beloved I'm not sure HOOM is the same.

no way Visions doesn't make the top 10, arguably the most influential album of the decade

twisted fantasy or yeezus in the top 10? should be the latter

flappy bird, Monday, 23 September 2019 19:44 (four years ago) link

Oh damn Fiona Apple will be up there too, duh. Insofar as "political" goes I don't think well-regarded albums by Ariel Pink, Sun Kill Moon or Swans will make top 20. Insofar as "their stock has fallen" I don't think LCD, Destroyer or Tame Impala will make top 20.

I ranked King Krule so highly mostly because it's... probably my favourite widely-celebrated album of the past ten years, certainly my most-listened to. It's so great!

I think Lemonade will be the highest-rated album made by a female musician, if not, then Lana. I think they ranked Solange higher that year as a mild controp

I don't think Visions will make top 10 and possibly even top 20-- it doesn't hold together as an album-- but "Oblivion" will be top 5 tracks

fgti (flamboyant goon tie included), Monday, 23 September 2019 19:45 (four years ago) link

I am interested (as interested as I can be about this shit, at least) to see where all the 2010 albums place-- Beach House, Contra, HOOM, The Suburbs, Kanye, etc. I myself forget that they came out this decade it all seems so long ago.

I have thoughts about Mt. Eerie, that the album's back-story obliterated anybody's capacity to approach it with any criticality when it dropped; Sufjan's grief album is unquestionably ""superior"" insofar as lists and rankings go-- really revelling in the particularly ghoulish nature of this exercise at this exact moment, lists are so dumb

If there was going to be a surprise ""outsider"" album in the top 20 (like Grouper, i.e.) my vote would be for the Under The Skin OST. If we're talking "what was the most influential recording of the past ten years" it'd be that.

fgti (flamboyant goon tie included), Monday, 23 September 2019 19:51 (four years ago) link

holds up well!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 23 September 2019 20:12 (four years ago) link

Agreed w/ most of it fgti, but I do think Destroyer will make the top 20. Under the Skin should make it, too, but we should be so lucky...

Good man :)

I much prefer voting in your own poll tbh, and am of the opinion that a '10s poll is too soon to call, in September 2019.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 23 September 2019 20:32 (four years ago) link

Based on the way predictions have been worded in this thread I almost forgot this was a readers poll. I started reading posts like "Yeah, they'll totally pull that move again this time won't they"

Evan, Monday, 23 September 2019 20:37 (four years ago) link

yeah obviously it's too soon. fuck pitchfork always

imago, Monday, 23 September 2019 20:38 (four years ago) link

reader's poll is why I'd imagine Beach House has a better shot at top 10 than Lemonade

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Monday, 23 September 2019 20:40 (four years ago) link

i think flappy was posting a question about who p4k editorial would choose--the presence of a reader's poll usually means the staff poll is coming soon

Mommy...can I go out and VAPE tonight? (voodoo chili), Monday, 23 September 2019 20:40 (four years ago) link

I am so surprised that there is anyone in the world that doesn't consider "Lemonade" to be one of the best albums ever made, but anyway

Yeah, the most influential piece of music in the film score community (in my estimation) from 2000-2009 was Desplat's score to "Birth". From 2010-present it's unquestionably the Levi. I can't even count the number of times that I've been watching a film and posited which Under The Skin cue had been used as temp score, it was so ubiquitous.

My bet for the next five/ten years is the score to Hereditary.

no way king krule will even crack the top thirty. he's a british white guy that plays guitar; not exactly the thing that gets people talking. pfork is nothing if not a complete attention slut and putting guitar records that high will get them very few retweets.

i'm expecting a very kendrick and solange heavy top ten, though they could just be complete dicks and put fucking bon iver all over it. honestly it's going to be a shitty list no matter what because of the quality records it's going to overlook: thinking things like bobby wratten, king, burial, william tyler, julia holter (i guess if anyone has a chance, she does, but it's not likely), carla morrison, la luz, mount kimbie, and others (all equally as boring). no matter; they've ignored plenty of brilliant records and will continue to do so because it just doesn't fit the agenda or the image.

Well, if they're gonna stan a "guitar band" it's gonna be King Krule and VW over Real Estate and Destroyer

I guess they might come back with a "the second Girls LP was great, you guys!" (but again, as with Mount Eerie, I think a contextualizing back-story has more currency around an album's release than it does when it's Posterity Time).

And also, like, this website has always, by dint of their decimal system, and the effects of attempting toward "definitive qualitative sorting" of albums into an 101-point gradient, always going to skew toward "what is good by consensus and universal criteria" than "what is potentially extremely meaningful and moving (but may not be quite as 'functional')"; I've been arguing this for over a decade, though, and I'm boring even myself at this point

devvvine, Monday, 23 September 2019 22:06 (four years ago) link

yeah I was referring to the eventual staff poll, prompted by the reader's poll opening today. definitely not too early for the decade, year-end music lists usually exclude anything put out after like early November anyway.

I feel confident that Visions will place very high, at least in the top 10, in the staff poll and probably the readers poll. her narrative, of course, has been complicated in the past year and a half. her stock has certainly gone down. but if we're talking about albums that shaped a decade, in my experience no single artist or album (because the sound of Visions is so distinct from AA) has had more influence on rising artists this decade.

i think art angels will place above visions
