lifeworld hell yeah. I LOVE Moon B

Actually enjoying seeing people's individual lists. They'll be more interesting than the ones that major publications put out.

triggercut, Sunday, 22 September 2019 03:17 (four years ago) link

theesatisfaction - earthee

I give Awe Naturale a slight edge, but I'm just happy to see they haven't been forgotten in the noisy landscape of the 2010s.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 22 September 2019 07:13 (four years ago) link

major publications will inevitably have to reflect some kind of "consensus", compromise, smoothing off rough edges. but the 2010s was a decade without consensus. we don't need another canon right now. better to take this opportunity to reflect and listen to some of the people who may have gotten overlooked the first time around, imo.

there's a lot of folks who are on this that would be on my list as well, but different records.

still, the ooz is on here; nice.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Sunday, 22 September 2019 15:09 (four years ago) link

What shall we bomb that poll with. Coombes? Gotta be something more Pitchforky

imago, Monday, 23 September 2019 16:44 (four years ago) link

nah I might vote seriously but it'll be pissing into the wind of their super-cool music-as-brand readership

imago, Monday, 23 September 2019 16:47 (four years ago) link

It's telling to see the "autofill" options that they've pre-populated.

Something that pairs well with an IPA?

I just submitted a ballot. Was really annoyed that they had the album option for "In A Poem Unlimited" but not "Half-Free". By the time we got to "songs" there was a tonne of stuff that was missing. Oh well

fgti (flamboyant goon tie included), Monday, 23 September 2019 17:50 (four years ago) link

You were allowed to type in your own choices, you weren't limited to the pre-populated ones (the instructions said just use the "Artist - Title" format)

#YABASIC (morrisp), Monday, 23 September 2019 17:51 (four years ago) link

You mean Artist: Title! Big difference lol

imago, Monday, 23 September 2019 17:52 (four years ago) link

Richard Dawson is not an autocomplete but Keith Richards is. I call for a full and lasting boycott of pitchfork.com

Apologies – the “Artist - Title” format is a registered trademark of Imago/ILM Poll GmbH

Piss has met wind. The only two that autocompleted were Weyes Blood and ATCQ. So much for that. Fuck doing the tracks obv except I might vote for Pen Pineapple Apple Pen ten times

actually I will do the tracks later, the poll is too strong with me :(

Janelle Monae
Oneohtrix Point Never
Pusha T

devvvine, Monday, 7 October 2019 15:38 (four years ago) link

we shouldn't give a shit what these wankers think. they've been the self-appointed keepers of the key for 20 years and they've done nothing with it except set up a us-centric canon of a particularly dull, zeitgeist-chasing hue. no alarms, no surprises, no point. we should let them subside into an irrelevant, embarrassing joke. no shade to anyone here who's written for them obv, you're good writers and your reviews deserve a better home

imago, Monday, 7 October 2019 15:45 (four years ago) link

I'm also furious 'Teenage Dream' just missed the Top 100 but come on now...

nashwan, Monday, 7 October 2019 15:56 (four years ago) link

the whole 'handing out scores and BNMs by committee based on trend positioning' model is just so fucked and bullshit, that issue underlies the whole problem

imago, Monday, 7 October 2019 16:00 (four years ago) link

if brad or alfred or whoever wants their review to have a 9/10 score atop it then goddamn it, give them their 9/10

imago, Monday, 7 October 2019 16:01 (four years ago) link

think we should all be suspicious at their attempts to put together a canon, whatever anyone thinks of the actual choices

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 7 October 2019 16:02 (four years ago) link

my point exactly. obviously i like/love plenty of these songs

and our 00's poll isn't comparable, before anyone starts out with 'but YOU'RE building a canon!' - a) we are not a public-facing brand advertisement corporation, b) our choices will be inevitably highly personal and anti-canonical and c) our polling process is very thorough and, ideally, forces us to engage with a vast multiplicity of music before we make any decisions

imago, Monday, 7 October 2019 16:09 (four years ago) link

also we're just a bunch of mates having fun, basically

because nobody will be interested in 2010s retrospectives between 31/12/2019 and 01/01/2030.

Meanwhile I am currently making a mix of 2018 to be released in January 2020, they are smarter than me.

the more interesting question would be if anything showed up in this list that had not been previously 'celebrated' via inclusion on one of their older lists, bnm designation etc.

dyl, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 00:56 (four years ago) link

For starters: Avicii - Levels

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 8 October 2019 01:02 (four years ago) link

i'm so perplexed that that site continues to single out kurt vile's "baby's arms"... that song is not even a particular standout on that album, much less for the entire decade. isn't it just a song that they just gave bnm as a token at the time b/c it was the first track on an (admittedly great) album w/ no real 'singles'? idgi

dyl, Tuesday, 8 October 2019 01:05 (four years ago) link

Hahaha I hadn’t noticed that was the KV song they picked. Yeah I struggle to think that would be one of the top 200 songs this decade, let alone the best song he released. Any of his top 5 songs on spotify would be a better choice.

I think it's very weird of that Billboard list to include The Weeknd and NOT have the song be "Can't Feel My Face"

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 03:04 (four years ago) link

November 2029

flopson, Tuesday, 17 December 2019 04:09 (four years ago) link

the intro to that fact list is making me insane ... sanctimony ahoy

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 04:13 (four years ago) link

if you're gonna have a list like that you shouldnt be ranking fucking pop smoke & 2019 thug songs ... i feel like the audacity of that demands u pick records that show a deeper reading of genre than this tepid poptimism

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Tuesday, 17 December 2019 04:16 (four years ago) link

Sorry that one belonged in the eoy thread not the eod one.

I like how many of the lists challenge the idea of eoy lists

lots of good records presented in a mostly baffling order

Simon H., Wednesday, 18 December 2019 17:24 (four years ago) link

weird to see a publication fucking with white lung after their singer went full alt-right. they weren't *that* good

american bradass (BradNelson), Wednesday, 18 December 2019 17:32 (four years ago) link

wait what

Simon H., Wednesday, 18 December 2019 17:33 (four years ago) link

the white lung trajectory from "good punk band" to "alt-right shill in charge of penthouse, which is now also alt-right" was, from a 2012 vantage point, unexpected!

that's a yikes from me fam

but I mean even putting that aside their placements are way too high imo

Simon H., Wednesday, 18 December 2019 17:37 (four years ago) link

Wait, Penthouse is now alt-right???

totally unnecessary bewbz of exploitation (DJP), Wednesday, 18 December 2019 20:18 (four years ago) link

despite the conor oberst association i really wouldnt have considered phoebe bridgers 'emo' so surprising to see her on that list

ufo, Wednesday, 18 December 2019 23:13 (four years ago) link

a lot of what gets counted as part of the emo umbrella is about association tbh

Simon H., Wednesday, 18 December 2019 23:22 (four years ago) link

Was Elliott Smith emo? If so, what is different about phoebe bridgers which makes her not emo?

That article doesn’t seem particularly damning(?)

dang I didn’t know anything about the White Lung singer besides the music. I think I may have seen them live a few years ago.

https://slate.com/human-interest/2018/12/penthouse-right-conservative-feminism-politics.html

this article maybe focuses a little too much on some dumb twitter beef penthouse started but does detail its rightward shift under barber-way (though it doesn't explicitly attribute it to her, she's been in charge since 2017)

there's some pretty damning stuff in that twitter thread too (publishing noted white nationalist mike cernovich is probably the worst)

Just going through some year-by-year lists and one thing I've not seen much mention of is Dysnomia by Dawn of Midi. Great record.

Life is a meaningless nightmare of suffering...save string (Chinaski), Tuesday, 31 December 2019 12:22 (four years ago) link

^^^ I'm putting together a "best jazz of the 2010s" piece and had to think really hard about whether to include that record or not. It's fantastic, but ultimately I had to cut it to make space for things that had broader cultural resonance.

shared unit of analysis (unperson), Tuesday, 31 December 2019 14:57 (four years ago) link

Don’t do that. Fuck “cultural resonance”, just list the best albums.

that Dawn of MIDI record is great and I've heard very little like it

some of the writing in the Tiny Mix Tapes list was excellent

The aforementioned Stereogum "best jazz albums of the 2010s" list is up now:

Argue away.

one month passes...

There needs to be more “Worst Songs/Albums of the 2010s” lists.
