I think plazzTT is referring to the other one posted on watmm (expired link upthread) which was basically a home made dj edits tape.

idk I thought it was really nice, its like a great pre-Incunabula album to me

frogbs, Thursday, 19 September 2019 13:31 (four years ago) link

You mean the Warp Tapes 89-93? Not the 'late 80s tape' of dj edits of other people's tracks?

The Pingularity (ledge), Thursday, 19 September 2019 13:42 (four years ago) link

the 89-93 tape is what I was referring to, don't know about this other tape but it sounds cool

i am generally unmoved by non-electronic instrument cover versions of electronic music but of course i will try to hear it once.

Putting this here so i find it later:

i've played it a handful of times, never really stunned

probably it fits in more with the approach of lehman's group than being a particularly probing translation from one medium/style to another

I just have a thing for jazz AE covers; when I hear 444 I really want it to have a sax solo

I feel somewhere between excited and unprepared. I spent more time with Autechre than any other artist in 2018, after more abortive explorations years before. But I still haven't even heard several albums and EPs. I got through NTS Sessions five times, but if you played name-that-Ae with me I'd probably bomb. It's kind of like I took several Ae courses and narrowly passed with a C-, and mostly just because I did most of the full-credit-if-you-just-did-it assignments. So now here's word of a next-level course —no prerequisites—and I want to take it but am afraid of flunking. I kind of like this idea of trying hard and failing, though at times I'm not quite sure what's there that I'm trying to appreciate. (I would write my way through some of NTS Sessions but eventually ran out of anthropomorphisms.)

There no rules to the Ae

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 23 March 2020 02:42 (four years ago) link

Most of the time it all sits in one randomized play list on my computer and when a new one comes out I throw it in the pile.

I can't pay no doctor bill, but Whitey's on the McAloon (Noodle Vague), Monday, 23 March 2020 02:50 (four years ago) link

how dare you, those albums are sequenced, we live in a society.
Jesse I would recommend Confield, EP7, Untilted and Exai as essential reference listening. If you want to go earlier, probably Amber, Garbage, Envane, Cichlisuite and the Peel Sessions are my recommendations. And LP5 but that's probably their most sterile sounding work (excepting the beauty of Rae).

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Monday, 23 March 2020 04:25 (four years ago) link

just listen to all of their albums chronologically

once the music of one album sounds natural, even inevitable, move on to the next

shouldn't take more than five or ten years

lukas, Monday, 23 March 2020 04:33 (four years ago) link

Here's a playlist of Autechre in chronological order - warning, this is my "best of" playlist, so it likely is missing some of your favorites, but is much more complete now with the recent additions of elseq 2-5.

octobeard, Monday, 23 March 2020 05:53 (four years ago) link

Huh some tracks are definitely missing - looks like a number of EPs and most content from the Peel Sessions were taken off Spotify. Sucks.

octobeard, Monday, 23 March 2020 05:56 (four years ago) link

Thanks for the list, Matthew. I've actually heard everything you mention at least once except for Untilted; it's more a question of not having digested the material (i.e., lukas's suggestion makes sense). Confield is actually the one I've heard the most; I got peak enjoyment out of it around listen five or six, and then some of it got annoying (again) without having also become entirely familiar, which is an unusual combination. I do want to spend more time with Exai, and I remember nothing about EP7 (the EPs box is a neat object but has the presumably deliberate effect of rendering the original releases less distinct. Just what do they mean when they say they've finished a new album—actually two? I can't wait to find out).

In part I went further in with Ae in '18 because Mark E. Smith died and The Fall's oeuvre had seemed similar in being enormous and esoteric when I got into them. But the way I "relate" to The Fall is more trad rock fan territory; Autechre really is a different kettle of fish.

xps Thanks, that playlist looks ambitious! (fellow Fall fan, no?)

eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Monday, 23 March 2020 06:25 (four years ago) link

I feel somewhere between excited and unprepared.

This is the best feeling though, no? A surprise AE album drop is the best album drop!

but if you played name-that-Ae with me I'd probably bomb.

Tbf with their track titles this happens to the best of us :) I think you'll feel way more at ease to stop trying to achieve full knowledge and just enjoy the ride. It's what their whole approach is aimed at.

Basically, whiney completely otm: There no rules to the Ae

chat updates:

Autechre :

pretty sure warp are going to want to do a physical release so the date = ?

but the stuff is done, by pure coincidence a few weeks ago, at the moment we're living with it and tidying up tiny things, but not touched it in 2 weeks so it's basically done

rob and i were both thinking of bringing it sooner but idk

need to talk to warp

was orig planned for late this year/early hext

also seven onesix recordings drop in less than a month

Seven onesix recording? Live recordings I guess

I tried buying the big dump of previous live recordings but the download failed. Got money back, but haven't tried again (also a bit miffed that there was no discount for the ones I already had)

today's is great & all but you could probably queue up a dozen gamelan albums on spotify to similar effect.

Awesome, thanks! My family is going to hate me.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 23 March 2020 14:39 (four years ago) link

omg I can't believe it only occurred to me now how much "Covid-19" looks like the name of an Autechre track.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 23 March 2020 18:00 (four years ago) link

oh I noticed that right away

frogbs, Monday, 23 March 2020 18:03 (four years ago) link

I created a Spotify playlist of all the 2015 live sets and have had it on shuffle for most of the day. It might be the perfect post-COVID music, because I really can't think of any reason to leave home and stand in a pitch black room with other people to hear this stuff.

but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 23 March 2020 20:54 (four years ago) link

Just catching up to the news now... TWO new albums? Curious what will differentiate them to be separate in a stylistic sense rather than one epic compendium a la NTS. And to confirm, seven onesix project that's imminently dropping is a set of recorded jams?

Knowing this is all coming soon gives me some latent strength to handle the inevitable drudgery and economic challenges that will ensue this summer

octobeard, Monday, 23 March 2020 22:17 (four years ago) link

OneSix was the name of the last tour, so it'll be live recordings of that. I lost my downloaded audience recordings of that tour so I'm warming up my wallet.

ogmor, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 10:48 (four years ago) link

Lotta good shit, Sean's done swathes of metal, reggae, Detroit, abstract ... last night he went through a folder of working Ae jams and played a few seconds of each. Quite a few recognisable, many quite dull, the very coolest ones cut off almost immediately (presumably wants to keep them for future releases!).

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Tuesday, 31 March 2020 11:19 (four years ago) link

liking the Italo-ish/hi-NRG/big chunky 80s vibe we seem to have landed on now

is anyone recording these? or writing up the tracklistings?

a passing spacecadet, Tuesday, 31 March 2020 13:35 (four years ago) link

They're still at it?!

Sean in the chatroom now saying he'd totally get a bidet if he had room for one. This is all a bit too close to home lol

(can't help you on the tracklist, sorry APS, though there was a google docs thing that floated in the chats someday, that tries to log everything)
