We’re just heading in to the fabled 11th episode. I hope it’s a good one because these housemates are maddening so far! If you have to change your mind so many times, then it’s possible there could be a match for you in the world somewhere outside of these three people.

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 18 September 2019 20:42 (four years ago) link

The only one that I so far think is fine is Kaori.

Yerac, Wednesday, 18 September 2019 20:55 (four years ago) link

Yeah, she seems very much like someone you could easily be friends with.

I’m not totally sure which event in episode 11 is the big one, but for me the scene with Shohei was totally shocking in comparison with the usual flow of things in the house.

This season is giving me a lot of existential anxiety and feelings of regret in general so far haha

Just finished ep16 and it was great. If you feel like the first 12 eps are dragging, just wait til ep 15 and you can feel the build happening.

i am surprised they showed this pink film that shohei was cast in.

one month passes...

Panelist Tokui Yoshimi recently admitted to a scandal (tax evasion, roughly $1M USD) and via his agency has announced he is suspending all entertainment appearances indefinitely. Looks like he will leave (temporarily or permanent?) from TH starting around episode 23... ep 22 just aired today in Japan.

He is an undeniable face/voice/mood of Terrace House, so I'm not sure who they will get to replace him, but it should be a reasonable talent given the rising international popularity of the show.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 5 November 2019 02:06 (four years ago) link

whoaaaa... so much panelist drama this season.

Yerac, Tuesday, 5 November 2019 02:10 (four years ago) link

they should have kept him, would add to the sketchy old man vibe lol

Which one is he - the guy with glasses? Or the other one?

Rui should take over the open spot on TH. OMG.

Yerac, Tuesday, 24 December 2019 22:43 (four years ago) link

Whereabouts are you? The current cast is insane... it gets crazier and crazier.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 25 December 2019 07:13 (four years ago) link

Netflix just released episodes 13-24. I think we got up to episode 17-18 last night.

Yerac, Wednesday, 25 December 2019 14:22 (four years ago) link

I didn't get Shohei. I imagined he was an escort or something as a side gig since they were always so weird about him.

Yerac, Thursday, 26 December 2019 01:18 (four years ago) link

He was indeed a trip, we viewers got kind of peek behind the curtain when he & Kaori let down their guard/kayfabe and Kaori admitted she could see how it could be perceived that she was engaged to her agent and that Shohei was uncommitted but was sleeping around a lot.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 27 December 2019 17:51 (four years ago) link

Ah, another basketball player (Ryo) that gets an omg. So far he seems to be as competent and attractive level as Hansan.

Yerac, Friday, 27 December 2019 19:26 (four years ago) link

Ryo is a gem. Have you heard him speaking English yet?

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 27 December 2019 21:27 (four years ago) link

the Netflix translations end on a cliffhanger to the best romance TH has seen in a long time (please don't spoil!) - it has been destroying me! i think it should be okay to say that Haruka's journey from weird date-jacking misanthrope to the giddy, tongue-tied beneficent lovestruck creature she is now is an amazing journey - she definitely stands in the running for all-time Most Improved Housemate

and as for her prince...

but

argh cliffhanger

say nothing

imago, Tuesday, 31 December 2019 01:07 (four years ago) link

and yeah fun stuff is bubbling up with the others

imago, Tuesday, 31 December 2019 01:08 (four years ago) link

Has he spoken a lot of english on the show? xpost

Ruka watching himself on tv was brutal.

Yerac, Tuesday, 31 December 2019 01:13 (four years ago) link

a bit funny though

imago, Tuesday, 31 December 2019 02:22 (four years ago) link

There's an episode where there is so much English spoken (by 3-4 members) that the subs are only present 50% of the time. Might be after the cliffhanger though... It's getting pretty great post where the international chunk stops...

Today's episode was lowkey amazing, the person you think is least likely to be an incredibly kind/empathetic/bearer of excellent advice steals the show.

I was at a kids bday party this weekend. My wife's friend's older sister mentioned to my wife that her 20 year old daughter (a model, now living in Tokyo) is dating someone who is/was a cast member from Terrace House. That is all the information that she was able to get from her, this person doesn't know anything about the show other than very surface details. Will try to follow up with more info at a later date.

This person is still doling out really amazing advice! She's like the female Han-san.

i was just looking up how many episodes there are now and just slightly spoiled myself by a pic of one of the new castmates who was very noticeable.

Broken egg thread reminding me of Ruka’s cracking eggs directly into a pan of boiling pasta. <3

Excited for next part of Terrace House to land. Thrilled for TH thread’s members representing in the TV poll too.

Utterly addicted to this show after a couple friends recommended it. My wife and I blew through the Tokyo episodes on NF in less than a week and had to find the newest ones as there's no way I could live with that cliffhanger for two months. I think part 3 has probably been the most interesting of this season so far, and I love the advice-giving castmate mentioned above

What do you all recommend for the next season of TH to watch? I imagine this was probably discussed before but I'm a little scared to read spoilers of prev seasons

Vinnie, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 15:25 (four years ago) link

Start at the beginning (which is a total hassle because it's not on NF incl. Japan) but it is not only the best season but the panel constantly refers back to the original series. There's also a 2 hour film "Closing Door" that takes place immediately after season 1 ends which is pretty good. But yeah chronological is a good start. In my opinion this current series is the best of the past 3. I'd rank them:

BGND + Closing Door
BGiTC
Tokyo 19-20
OND
AS

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 16:38 (four years ago) link

ugh, I STILL have not finished the original TH. It's hard to pick it back up. Netflix needs to purchase it.

Yerac, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 19:44 (four years ago) link

Ok I'll look for that, thanks. I don't know if this is common among TH fans but we started skipping the panel segments after 6 episodes or so. It was a combo of the panel making a bunch of references to prev seasons we didn't understand + we became impatient to get back to the action + we occasionally found the panel boring. But I'm regretting that a little (especially after one moment this season where a castmate is affected by the panel's thoughts when that castmate watches the show) and I'll probably go back and rewatch their thoughts on key moments

Vinnie, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 23:43 (four years ago) link

when i first started watching (I started with Aloha State) I was skipping the panel because I didn't get them. But seriously...they are probably the best part of the show. Start watching tham all.

Yerac, Tuesday, 4 February 2020 23:45 (four years ago) link

Yeah as Carey says: once you realize the panel is the best part of the show you will regret that later. Plus a lot of alumni show up (and rejoin as cast, some several times!)

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 23:49 (four years ago) link

And not to say the current season is "bad" necessarily, it's just that TH has become a huge vehicle for the castmembers so there is a lot of kayfabe going on (you learn a lot about this towards the end of BGitC), whereas in BGND (my abs. fave), the vibe/action is much more pure.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 4 February 2020 23:51 (four years ago) link

The degree of kayfabe (I had to look this word up, btw - useful word) in the show is another thing I am very curious about. There was a moment in a episode where a character outside the house was surprised at hearing some news, but then, there was a camera set up so obviously they knew something was going on. There's some other small important moments in the house that are caught on camera and I have to wonder if it's serendipitous or whether anything is restaged. Overall, the producers do a good job of making things seem real/natural. But again, don't really want to go looking for articles that reveal the nuts and bolts and then spoil earlier stuff for myself!

Vinnie, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 00:34 (four years ago) link

I did not know this word either. Was it Lauren Tsai that talked about how only a couple of hours were filmed each day?

Yerac, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 01:10 (four years ago) link

That wouldn't surprise me. Seems almost all recordings in the house are done in the morning or at night, when everyone is around. And the cameras sometimes track people as they move inside the house so a director/crew must be working live at those times? I imagine no matter how "real" this show is, it must be a nightmare to film and edit

Vinnie, Wednesday, 5 February 2020 01:39 (four years ago) link

three weeks pass...

Assuming this thread can act as a catch-all for Japanese reality television, it seems right to announce here that the new Ainori Love Wagon: African Journey is now up on Netflix! We watched most of it elsewhere - just three episodes remain. It is as harrowing and compelling as ever.
