lol all the comments i presume from brits going: “der schoolboy amateur! learn to steer a puddle!! loser.”

me, a yank: “whoa, do britishes have no drainage sewer infrastracture at _all_?? that’s fucking barbaric! lol savages. I guess it’s to put out all the stovetop chips fires they have.”

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 25 September 2019 00:28 (four years ago) link

Not a great week to have the World's in Yorkshire. It's been pissing down all week and is going to piss down for the rest of the week too.

The above levels rain are obv ridiculous, but I'd actually welcome rain on Sunday. The course + rain has all the ingredients to make it feel like a classic rainy Flanders classic. I'm pretty stoked for it.

For spectators it's obv a different matter. Are you in the vicinity and plan to have a look NBS?

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 25 September 2019 07:14 (four years ago) link

No, I live in London so Yorkshire's a bit of a trek. Some of my clubmates were talking about going up there, though.

pro tour riders must hate riding in britain

heavy roads, potholes everywhere, terrible weather... at least the crowds are good

stoffle (||||||||), Sunday, 29 September 2019 12:57 (four years ago) link

Le Grand Depart in the 2014 TDF must have fooled them into thinking that conditions are generally warm, dry and sunny.

Dan Worsley, Sunday, 29 September 2019 13:31 (four years ago) link

not convinced by this move by VDP - still a lot of weapons in the peloton behind him

Brutal race. VDP just blocked by hunger. Trentin *finally* without VDP and then there's Pedersen.

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 29 September 2019 15:26 (four years ago) link

poor trentin, turned on the taps and fuck all came out

the creator has a mazda van (NickB), Sunday, 29 September 2019 15:34 (four years ago) link

Just caught up with this one -- crazy slog at times but damn, what a finish. Trentin just couldn't do it.

Nice one to keep us going, that.

TdF said today they won't do a tour without spectators, but are still hoping to go through with it this year. That seems positively in vain imo.

ah thx!

i got through much of the intro buildup, will be returning at leisure time. the sense of flow and environment is great. i do seem to distinguish my love of _racing_ as a thing, my appreciation of pro fandom as a thing, and my love of cycling qua cycling. i have tried to explain this to my non bikenerd friends/fam, and they get eye-rolly quite fast as i insist "these are different things. erm, to me."

omg i just got to the part of the tinkoff car watching sagan do the the kwaaremont and it is the fucking best, like “caint tell him nuthin he got his own way to do it” and the other guy is just “yup.”

lmao at all the DSs switching effortlessly between english, flemish, dutch, italian and french

||||||||, Friday, 3 April 2020 09:26 (four years ago) link

DS1 *speaks italian*
DS2 "just speak dutch now. all the italians are fucked. he speaks perfect dutch."

||||||||, Friday, 3 April 2020 09:26 (four years ago) link

I like that you're enjoying it so much :)

I'll lament the absence of the High Mass of cycling this Sunday

I'd been looking forward to classics season for months (as I do every year.) gutted it's a wash out but these are going some way to filling the gap

I'm more or less at peace w/ it now, but springtime is HUGE here in the lowlands when it comes to cycling. part of life. c'est la vie, but sorely missed.

I don't believe in the TdF going through either. Vuelta, maybe?

No chance the tour happens. Worlds? Lombardia? As the last races standing? If this goes long enough the Melbourne to Warnambool is going to have some new found relevance.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Friday, 3 April 2020 11:35 (four years ago) link

("what is that growing there?" "i dunno...uh" "barley i guess.")

^^springtime DS commentary recognizing that 'springtime is HUGE' in the lowlands. i can't remember exactly what the commentary was, but i was glad the editors left that in there.

blather rinse repeat 2020 (Hunt3r), Friday, 3 April 2020 16:26 (four years ago) link

Lombardia, gheh, first and last race of the season, hadn't thought of that.

Still rooting for the Vuelta though (which will depart in the Netherlands).

Ludo, Friday, 3 April 2020 16:48 (four years ago) link

i was thinking lombardia would be an interesting site and a difficult one given the extreme difficulties they had there. i'd love for cycling to "lift them up," but they may need better therapy than that.

The Tour de France has been officially postponed to 29 August owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, and will finish on 20 September, the organiser, Amaury Sport Organisation, confirmed on Wednesday. Shifting the centrepiece of the cycling calendar will involve a delicate juggling act with the other two Grand Tours, the Vuelta a España and the world road championships, and the five “monument” one-day Classics all jostling for space at the end of the season when it is hoped that major sports events in Europe will resume.
