I should join some message board that’s mostly edgy 22 year olds in 2019, and then when they become civil adults in twelve years I could post things like “oh, we we were pretty gross back then!”
but then one of them will figure out I was nearly 40 at the time

perusing a right to be fat? gives an interesting glimpse into historic ilx discourse on weight issues. I'm not sure how many of the participants still post to ilx, due to the many login name changes over more than a decade.

I remember a significant amount of fat-shaming and fat-phobia on various ILTMI threads ... and there are plenty more ... and yeah, ILM has a lot of "lol fat male music nerds" stuff on it, and that is also gross, but the stuff directed at women is the most embarrassing/awful

so, deems, you're saying that ilx, if not already in the gutter dripping with bean juice from a discarded can, is headed there in a handbasket?
― A is for (Aimless), Friday, 13 September 2019 19:45 (four years ago) link
ilx used to be better but I'm pretty sure it's not because people were posting stuff about "fat chicks" and calling each other "fags" or whatnot, which seems to be your contention
― Seany's too Dyche to mention (jim in vancouver), Friday, 13 September 2019 19:46 (four years ago) link
not exactly that, certainly, but the bathwater/baby ratio is questionable somewhere in the "ugh how awful everything was" jim
aimless you seem to be in a very negative spiral of ilx comments and i hope all is well

no one is saying "how awful everything" was though. they're saying "this specific aspect of old ilx was bad". this is certainly no worse than whatever it is you do whenever anyone makes that kind of point, which is to make a bit of a sophistic argument against that sentiment which is always vague
― Seany's too Dyche to mention (jim in vancouver), Friday, 13 September 2019 19:54 (four years ago) link
why dyou think 'ilx used to be better', leaving specific concerns about the thread in question aside
― theRZA the JZA and the NDB (darraghmac), Friday, 13 September 2019 19:59 (four years ago) link
it was better when there were more voices expressing lively opinions & individual perspectives, to be sure. however, many of the now-absent voices were encouraged to leave BY the fat jokes & fag-calling. many others have left for their own IRL reasons, not because of a more polite atmosphere. it’s a furphy to conclude that ILX would be better now if we still had three funny assholes and 12 boring assholes, whether or not we still had a hundred interesting & smart ppl who have also gone.

i was gonna say its possibly a question for a separate, non-leading thread
the answer, imo & tbrr, would be in the users answering that it was better now

a lot of good posters don't post here anymore or hardly ever post. thinking about heavyweights like max read or nabisco, not dom passantino - who could be funny, but ultimately was legitimately abusive to a number of posters. this is why ilx isn't as good

no one is saying "how awful everything" was though. they're saying "this specific aspect of old ilx was bad".
I thought I made it pretty clear. Even Dom and some of the other problematic posters (e.g. Cankles) had some classic threads where they weren't shitheads.

a lot of us will have started at least one morally dubious shit thread in 2008, but the standard protocol is to deny their existence, never revive them, and pray that they never pop up in dmac's random thread results. sanskrit did the opposite, effectively turning himself in for a crime that he'd gotten away with for the past eleven years. was he high or...?
