what the absolute fuck

ABC can go to hell. Running propaganda with a picture of @AOC being set on fire, with dead bodies & skulls in the background, was absolutely despicable. People need to be fired over this. It’s ridiculous & evil. ABC profited off of it, during the #DemDebate. Shame on ABC. Shame. pic.twitter.com/o7msRtQI3J

Viral Video About Eating Babies at AOC Town Hall Was Staged by Pro-Trump Group

LaRouche PAC, a far-right group that supports Donald Trump, has taken credit for trolling Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez during a town hall meeting yesterday. An operative with LaRouche made headlines overnight after standing up at AOC’s town hall in Queens yesterday and saying that humanity should eat babies, among other ridiculous things, to address the climate crisis.

Viral video from the incident shows a woman posing as a supporter of AOC and wearing a shirt that reads, “Save the Planet, Eat the Children.” Many people clearly thought she was mentally disturbed, but LaRouche PAC, a fringe organization that believes climate change is a hoax, was behind the stunt, according to the group’s Twitter account.

...AOC can be seen trying to calm the woman down, repeatedly saying “it’s okay,” and ignoring the comments about babies. While the woman’s reference to “bombing” Russia may seem odd, the group supports both President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“It was us,” the LaRouche organization tweeted late Thursday, in response to a question about whether the woman was serious. “Malthusianism isn’t new, Jonathan Swift knew that. Sometimes, only satire works.”

President Donald Trump got into the fray last night, tweeting “AOC is a Wack Job!” in response to the viral video. Trump likely had no idea that the woman in the video was one of his supporters.

this will be much more fun when someone deepfakes AOC responding to the fake supporter of babyeating with approval and praise, and then trump responds to THAT, and the deepfake video is the only version 90% of his supporters see

(note to people who still don't think this is a problem: the tech is there to do it now, and people are demonstrably incredibly dumb and gullible with 0.00000000001% media literacy)

It's kinda cool how we're reaching peak technical sophistication at the same time we're reaching peak incuriosity/ignorance. And by 'kinda cool' I mean (puts out eyes with knitting needles and just keeps on pushing those needles as far as they'll go)

AOC treating someone with dignity, no matter what their issue, completely blows Trump's (and Trump Jnr's) mind. They can't even comprehend what that must be like, you gotta be a wackjob to act like that, amirite!?

the "modest proposal" reference is the nod to satire but the lack of intelligent application and general pride at one's belligerence without making a reasonable point marks them as the asses they are. just because you read it doesn't mean you understood it.

Yeesss, daaaaad, I'm awaaaaare, jeeeeez. Let's say the gap between easy access to pretty much all of the information in the world and people's willingness to engage with said information critically is at an all-time high.

I think it’s probably fair to say that the extreme degree of partisanship and niche “news” services contributes to this

k3vin k., Monday, 7 October 2019 00:53 (four years ago) link

we're reaching peak technical sophistication at the same time we're reaching peak incuriosity/ignorance.

I'm not sure this is true. Incuriosity/ignorance implies a kind of passivity, which I don't think is really what we're experiencing. I think gullibility might the more accurate term.

But I'm not sure even gullibility covers it, because if a mistakenly believed fact is disproved, even to the satisfaction of the person holding a particular opinion, it rarely changes the underlying fundamental belief. We're under the illusion that facts matter but they don't, at least not in and of themselves. Facts on any one particular story or issue are just raindrops, even if a thousand of them turn out not to be raindrops - what difference does it make? Even if it turns out not be raining at all, well its raining somewhere, and it will be raining here again sometime, so in a way its raining anyway, regardless of if there is any rain

So is anyone legitimately melting down over these endorsements or is this simply some weird horseshoe theory of "liberal tears" at work within an extremely narrow sliver of left social media?

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Wednesday, 16 October 2019 12:26 (four years ago) link

what the fuck

Reacting to the news that three members of the Squad—Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and Ilhan Omar—were set the endorse Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) for president, CNN anchor John King wondered aloud after Tuesday night’s Democratic primary debate whether the move would help the progressive senator in the race or be seen as “too urban.”

“It’s an extension of what we see tonight,” King said of the young progressive congresswomen of color. “A debate of who will lead the party and where the party is going to go. Which part of the party will lead the party into the 2020 election? They are more of the younger, fresher face. More aggressive and liberal. Less compromising.”

Noting that the endorsements would “certainly help” Sanders as he looks for a lane to victory in the Democratic primary, King added that they may have some other Democrats asking: “Is this too far left? Is this too uncompromising? Is it too urban? Is it too internet? Does the Democratic Party need to find a broader audience?”
