So what's this Amnesia port that just launched on Switch? Horror game, I assume?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 12 September 2019 20:20 (four years ago) link

yeah Amnesia: The Dark Descent dates from the beginning of the indie boom, no idea what those games are like though

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Thursday, 12 September 2019 21:12 (four years ago) link

The horrorest! Definitely worth a look if that’s at all your vibe.

Wandering about a haunted mansion solving puzzles and trying to recover your lost memories to uncover what horrible things once went on. You’re basically defenceless. it revolves around trying to conserve your reserves of light (lamp oil, essentially) cuz the more time you spend in the dark the crazieeeeerrr things get.

The sound design is freaky and awesome, lots of creaking, moaning and groaning. Best played in the dark with headphones.

Xp

Sounds like Resident Evil. (I just bought Resident Evil 7 for my PS4; hard to say no to $15).

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 12 September 2019 21:50 (four years ago) link

Speaking of RE, I’m not a huge player of the series but that 4 vs 1 assymetrical multiplayer game they recently announced looks really promising

My understanding, having played only bits of the ones that were on GameCube (4? Zero? Remake?), is that as the series goes on, particularly after 4, they become more and more action-gamey, which fans of the series (who preferred scares and exploration) didn't like. Right? 7 was received as a return to form, of sorts, I thought. This multiplayer seems more action-y again, or at least like Saw, or that Friday the 13th game. I dunno, I guess it could be cool. I still don't have (or want) PS4 online, though I did get the free year of Nintendo Online, which I may or may not ever use.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 13 September 2019 01:50 (four years ago) link

7 is backwoods horror iirc

ciderpress, Friday, 13 September 2019 02:11 (four years ago) link

It's still wandering around in a big house/mansion/whatever, solving puzzles, managing items, figuring out the story and avoiding monsters. But yeah, I think its antagonists are very Texas Chainsaw/Rob Zombie rednecks.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 13 September 2019 02:52 (four years ago) link

re7 is fantastic, top tier RE

adam, Friday, 13 September 2019 02:52 (four years ago) link

4 and 2 are S tier so like 1,3,7 are A tier

adam, Friday, 13 September 2019 02:53 (four years ago) link

This multiplayer seems more action-y again, or at least like Saw, or that Friday the 13th game.

i also thought of the friday the 13th game (which i haven't played - only watched on twitch) - it looks like that, only more fun.

Playing the DQXI demo which is v meaty, a little fuzzy in handheld mode but I'm 100% on board for this

cdkeys have UK eshop credit for 20% off at the moment, £30 for £23.99

i don't think i've ever played a DQ game. they all seemed pretty generic i guess? was i wrong?

Mordy, Friday, 13 September 2019 15:58 (four years ago) link

Tim Rogers' video about it should tell you everything you would want to know

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Friday, 13 September 2019 16:03 (four years ago) link

they're all very traditional jrpgs with good production values. they invented the genre in the 80s and haven't really deviated from that formula.

ciderpress, Friday, 13 September 2019 16:03 (four years ago) link

i mostly enjoyed my time with 11 but it wouldn't sniff my fav jrpgs of the generation list

ciderpress, Friday, 13 September 2019 16:12 (four years ago) link

i had a great time with it until i stopped playing

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 13 September 2019 16:24 (four years ago) link

yeah i never finished the true ending, had had enough by then

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Friday, 13 September 2019 16:28 (four years ago) link

I have major blind spots so I'd only just heard about Ni No Kuni, which is apparently a remaster. So! Does it stand out? I'm not great with turn based but I think the art looks pretty neat.

Evan, Friday, 13 September 2019 16:34 (four years ago) link

i havent played NNK1 but 2 was very disappointing, you could see the exact moment when they ran out their budget and it was only halfway through the game

ciderpress, Friday, 13 September 2019 16:45 (four years ago) link

the big deal with 1 was that ghibli did the animation iirc

ciderpress, Friday, 13 September 2019 16:46 (four years ago) link

Aha, cool. Thanks!

Evan, Friday, 13 September 2019 16:53 (four years ago) link

Tim Rogers has sold me

Bedtime story gaming is the only gaming I have

Mitch C. Palace (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 13 September 2019 16:56 (four years ago) link

Curious now- what exactly indicated the budget ran out? Suddenly crude character models? Suddenly light or missing necessary cut scenes and fleshed out dialogue?

Evan, Friday, 13 September 2019 16:56 (four years ago) link

talking about 2 there, not the one on switch - you get to a second continent and unlike the first there's only one town there and a ton of empty unused overworld space and then you never see another new enemy type after that for the rest of the game, just palette swapped harder versions of existing ones

i think 1 is better regarded but still has the Level 5 problem of not being quite deep enough gameplay wise for its length

ciderpress, Friday, 13 September 2019 17:10 (four years ago) link

also fun fact about ni no kuni 1: it was originally released as a DS game in japan that came with a physical spellbook you had to read in order to learn the spells you used in combat which you would draw in with the stylus

because of that it was passed over for localization and the PS3 game was basically a reboot that redesigned it without that stuff

i'll do something like this eventually but its too early, theres still at least half a dozen more games i want to play some of which aren't out yet

ciderpress, Friday, 13 September 2019 17:24 (four years ago) link

ni no kuni 1 was ok, really pretty but the battle system was only fun during boss battles
also was one of those where it reaches a natural ending and you think "that was fun" .. and then it keeps going on and on for no good reason

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 13 September 2019 17:44 (four years ago) link

What would y'all recommend as a Switch JRPG for someone who kind of hates JRPGs? I'm very charmed by the looks & environment of DQ XI, but given that it is a "traditional" JRPG, I'm a bit skeptical. I just want a big 'ol novelistic chunk of game to sink some hours into that maybe doesn't have too much in the way of random turn-based encounters and embarrassing fanservice nonsense (the latter is what has kept me away from Xenoblade Chronicles 2, despite the praise for it).

icy bike chain rain (zchyrs), Friday, 13 September 2019 18:20 (four years ago) link

from the video, you can avoid all random encounters in dq xi

Mitch C. Palace (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 13 September 2019 18:22 (four years ago) link

FE?

prorogue mahone (||||||||), Friday, 13 September 2019 18:37 (four years ago) link

DQXI has the modern style of JRPG encounters where you have to touch an enemy on the field to go into battle mode, not random encounters. it's still turn based combat though.

Fire emblem is turn-based tactics missions if that sounds more appealing to you

i'm blanking on good real-time/action JRPGs on switch other than xenoblade and ys 8 which both have some fanservicey stuff.

ciderpress, Friday, 13 September 2019 18:45 (four years ago) link

I don't know how you could really have a JRPG that someone who hates JRPGs would like. Maybe a very short one.

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Friday, 13 September 2019 18:45 (four years ago) link

I was interested in ys 8 cause of the action RPG angle... what exactly are we referring to in regards to fanservice in this context?

Evan, Friday, 13 September 2019 18:48 (four years ago) link

the game takes place on a desert island so some characters are uh lightly dressed. plus iirc the first party member is introduced via a dumb scene of adol walking in on her bathing in the river but i dont recall anything else like that afterwards

ciderpress, Friday, 13 September 2019 19:02 (four years ago) link

xp I'm referring to gratuitous T&A characters with dinner-plate eyes.

icy bike chain rain (zchyrs), Friday, 13 September 2019 19:04 (four years ago) link

So ideal is Earthbound without random encounters or say another Breath of the Wild type game?

Evan, Friday, 13 September 2019 19:13 (four years ago) link

if you're okay with turn based combat as long as its not random encounters then DQXI is probably the pick still

ciderpress, Friday, 13 September 2019 19:15 (four years ago) link

BRING PERSONA 5 TO SWITCH U COWARDS

prorogue mahone (||||||||), Friday, 13 September 2019 19:17 (four years ago) link

theyre bringing the better smt spinoff game instead

ciderpress, Friday, 13 September 2019 19:22 (four years ago) link

I think I can deal with the turn-basedness. I think my ideal game is just BotW with a better story, really.

icy bike chain rain (zchyrs), Friday, 13 September 2019 19:25 (four years ago) link

I really only play JRPGs for the battle systems

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Friday, 13 September 2019 19:31 (four years ago) link

the only other japanese open world game on switch is uh...dragons dogma? which i havent played but pretty sure people like that one for the combat and not for the story

ciderpress, Friday, 13 September 2019 19:31 (four years ago) link

you want a good story you read a book imo

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Friday, 13 September 2019 19:34 (four years ago) link

Oh, I agree. When I say "better" I mean within videogame standards.
