I was talking to a friend recently about how before The Force Awakens, the character and plot material in trailers/interviews made it relatively clear what we were in for, what kind of things would happen, where we'd end up by the movie's end. While not without faults, The Last Jedi kind of blew that out of the water and I'm just wanting to be shown something new and completely unexpected. It's freeing!

Eliza, should I try checking out Resistance again? It seemed aimed at a younger audience than Rebels, which I enjoyed a lot, when I tried a few episodes.
― mh, Monday, 21 October 2019 18:31 (four years ago) link
IMO it took about 4 episodes to get good, and then it got really good. It's definitely pitched a bit younger but the storytelling is pretty solid and it's not afraid to explore more adult themes, too.

Also spotted in this epic shot are Nebulons, Brah’atoks, U-Wings, Lucrehulks, MC75s, Nebulon Bs, Sphyrna-Classes (aka the Hammerhead Cruiser from Knights of the Old Republic), what looks like a Baleen-class heavy freighter (the ship Han Solo and Chewie have in The Force Awakens), a Defender Class Corvette, maybe even a YT-2400 light freighter, Lancer-class pursuit craft, a MG-100 StarFortress SF-17, a Vakbeor-class cargo frigate, a Free Virgillia-class Bunkerbuster, and many, many more. All of which are real things on Wookieepedia if you want to check.
So hop to.

I do like the hypergrandiose arrangement of the main theme, but Williams is fully bowing out with this one so why not.

I wasn't keeping track of this, but I got a promotional email earlier today, when tickets went on sale at the El Capitan Theatre; hours later, I idly clicked the link, and chose a random acceptable day/time as a test; there was one pair of good seats left, so... ok. I'm ready to "enjoy a laser & light show before each screening, photo ops with First Order Stormtroopers™ and costume exhibits" on the afternoon of Saturday, Dec. 21.

Can I make a brief observation? (I'm sure there are a zillion other Star Wars threads, but this is the one on top.)
I'm far from a trve kvlt SW fan (though I have friends like that -- one guy had a podcast for a few years, collects the toy figures, etc.). Like most ppl my age, I grew up loving the movies; bought a secondhand "visual encyclopedia" or two in the prequel era; etc. I have no deep investment in defending the "honor" of the property, and I lack the depth of knowledge to get into nerd-level discourse. But a person I follow on Twitter occasionally retweets these dudes declaring that they've found a new "plot hole" in the Star Wars storyline or mythology... and then a bunch of their followers pile on with smug affirmations (like, "Love to wear my Jedi robe and use my real last name when I'm supposed to be hiding out from space Nazis," or whatever).
And I can never resist butting in with a explanation/rebuttal, because (a) it feels lame to be picking apart a narrative that (to my understanding) wasn't even really fleshed out beyond the first movie when that was made, let alone planned to take shape the way it is, after being cobbled together over the decades; but also (b) I realize that there actually *are* good responses to these "gotcha!" posts, which even I (in my casual fandom) am able to easily identify and point out. If anything, it's impressive how reasonably coherent the SW universe actually is, when you realize how these little nitpicks actually can be resolved if you step back and apply a little thought to the problem ("No-Prize" style), rather than rushing to publicly declare what a supreme boss you are for having outwitted the combined forces of George Lucas, Walt Disney, and Ron Howard. You know what I mean? That shit bugs me!
― drunk on hot toddies (morrisp), Tuesday, 22 October 2019 04:39 (four years ago) link
All mythmakers run into the same problem set fwiw. Pointing out plot holes in your epic of choice often just illustrates how blind you are to the ur-narrative, or something. All heroes are pie filling; all worlds are pastry - the way you tell an American story is there’s no lid.
