The best thing about orchestras

Ennh something I wanted to post in the “worst” thread is a general lack of attention (when it comes to orchestras) to the comparative virtuosity of their kit players. If you’re gonna spend all that money on a cool concertmaster, can’t you have a ringer on the kit as well? When it appears, it’s the most dominating element, you want a really good drummer or none at all imo

Anyway those videos are nice :)

I'd go to see Bernard Purdie with a symphony orchestra in a heartbeat.

the best thing about orchestras is when they effortlessly "cut loose" or otherwise demonstrate that they're not actually all that stodgy and humorless, eg the last orchestra performance I went to, which ended with an absolutely butt-shakingly great and "saucy" rendition of "Ain't Misbehavin'"
