I told the @nytimes everything. So did whistleblowers I was in touch with inside @MIT and @Edge. They printed none of the most damning truths. @joi is on the board of the NYT.

THANK GOD FOR @RonanFarrow https://t.co/MMFI9umhf2

The MacArthur Foundation today accepted the resignation of Joi Ito as a member of our board and our affiliate @LeverforChange, effective immediately. We thank Ito for his service.

not sure what xeni is saying there; that she had the info in ronan's profile? he doesn't quote her anywhere.

akm, Sunday, 8 September 2019 18:25 (four years ago) link

That NYT didn't want to publish damning information on Ito, who coincidentally also sat on their board. I don't think she expected Farrow to quote her. I mean, she seems pretty happy that he exists :)

Frederik B, Sunday, 8 September 2019 19:23 (four years ago) link

the idea the times wouldnt report on this bc a dude that would be associated w epstein sat on their board seems several degrees more cynical abt the nyt newsroom than I'm willing to be even at this late date

The only counterargument I can see to whacked is -- what good would that do anyone with so much documentation out there? OTOH, still easier to nab someone with his testimony than without.

Among the guests on the list: Elon Musk, Joi Ito, Peter Thiel, Mark Zuckerberg, Priscilla Chan, Michelle Yee, and Reid Hoffman.

And of course Jeffrey Epstein.

It was in fact Hoffman’s executive assistant who sent out the list, according to the email signature.

I hate to be that guy, but I'm not clear on how that implicates Thiel, Zuckerberg or Chan. Is it saying that everyone invited received a guest list in advance and knew Jeffrey Epstein would be there? And was this like a 10 person dinner or a hundred person dinner? I just think people shouldn't be sloppy with equating someone who kinda sorta traveled in the same circles with him to someone who took money from him, partied with him, went to his island etc.

I mean honestly every super-rich person in America (on earth?) is probably one degree of separation from Jeffrey Epstein. Not that I think that highly of the super-rich, but they're not ALL pedophiles and/or pedophile enablers.

Not implicating them (at least on my end, by sharing the tweet), but it’s good to know who he’s been a guest of honor with.

An anonymous massage therapist who claims to have been sexually assaulted by Kevin Spacey has died, according to a notice filed in court by the actor's attorneys.

The individual, suing as a "John Doe," filed claims in September 2018 with the allegation of being forced to grab the actor's genitals twice during a massage two years earlier at a private residence in Malibu. In May, a federal judge in California allowed the case to move forward despite Spacey's objection that the plaintiff's identity was being shielded.

Now, just a month after the parties came to a plan for proceeding in the suit that detailed prospective discovery and envisioned a seven- to 11-day trial, the plaintiff's attorney has informed Spacey that the client "recently passed."

i dont think that the nytimes is in the habit of burying stories bc of a random board member, no -- ill buy that like jeff bezos has the kind of power to squash or softpedal stories critical of amazon but the idea that reporters are just like *shrug* bc some dude they never heard of who doesnt work in the news room wants to kill a story is patently absurd

At Financial Trust, a company with fewer than a dozen employees, investment expenses varied widely, from $1.3 million in 2000 to $16 million in 2004 to $42 million in 2005. In 2006 — the year Mr. Epstein was charged in Florida — Financial Trust pushed $117 million into an unnamed subsidiary whose purpose was undisclosed. The subsidiary was apparently transferred to Southern Trust in 2013, and by the end of 2017 the subsidiary accounted for more than half of the company’s $391 million in assets. The filings also disclose that Southern Trust received a $30.5 million loan that same year, but don’t say who provided it.

One thing the financial statements make clear: Mr. Epstein paid himself handsomely. He pocketed $400 million in dividends and other payments from the companies starting in 1999 — the first full year after he moved his operations to the Virgin Islands from New York.

The opacity of Mr. Epstein’s financial dealings has been a perplexing issue since he was arrested in July on federal charges of sex trafficking with underage girls. Although the criminal case against him closed after he committed suicide in federal custody in August, Mr. Epstein’s finances remain an important matter for women who are suing his estate claiming they were among his victims.

Simon H., Thursday, 3 October 2019 21:59 (four years ago) link

Incredibly rich people are always looking for ways to grow their fortunes, and Epstein probably was investing a little and playing a shell game with the rest, right? Probably another case where someone could have thrown cash in an index fund and come out ahead, instead they’re behind or get a pittance so their buddy gets to jet around and buy islands

In the spirit of the title: Chrissy Teigen making a heartfelt complaint about being targeted by Qanon/Pizzagate nut jobs - and the first 100 comments being "MJ was innocent!" nut jobs, which I didn't realise was even a thing, let alone a thing fixated in John Legend.

u know what is not great? I still have to read on social media many times a day that John and I are pedophiles and look at photoshopped/miscaptioned photos of us on "Epstein Island" and I just have to deal with it because "people are crazy these days"
