I sort of breezed past this one last night, but paid closer attention today. What a song.

Love this!

the spoken kiss-off bit at the end of "Don't Call Me" is a riot

Going into this, I envisioned Maren Morris being the weak link because I care not a bit about her solo work, but there is no weak link to be found here. I'm extremely enamored with every aspect of it: singing, writing, performance, production. It probably has edged out the Meernaa record for my fave of the year at this point.

production on this album reminds me of bachelor no. 2, it sounds amazing

I had the same thought. I also experimented with an alternate reality: The Highwomen as Morris' debut, then Hero as her first solo album.

Brandi Carlisle, to whom I've paid polite respect (a friend is a massive fan), sounds excellent too. I may prefer as harmonizer and backup singer.

anyone who hasn't heard Brandi's last album should ... it's terrific, and a big step up from her previous work, imo. it's also another Cobb job(b), with Shooter Jennings co-producing.

it's hard to imagine her singing backup to anyone. i mean, of course she can do it, but she's a big, big voice (and not afraid to use it).

it's one of the many reasons "if she ever leaves me" is so amazing

It's a big step in some regards, but "The Story" is among the finest songs from the 00s.

And then he stared down at his shoes
Through the pink begonia's blue
Said, "Daddy, all I want is your silver belt buckle
And maybe your black Stetson hat"
And both of us laughed about that

what incredible writing

for subject matter neighbors I was reminded of the even more brutal "Scared at Night"

i don't disagree with this at all, i just think her previous albums were uneven as compared to the newest one. it's more consistently good-to-great.

alpine static, Sunday, 8 September 2019 07:07 (four years ago) link

This is such a terrific album... it pushes every button for me!

(I do wish it had just one more short, kickass song at the very end... “Wheels of Laredo” ends it on kind of an unresolved note.)

Right now, If She Ever Leaves Me is my song of the year. What a great album.

Life is a meaningless nightmare of suffering...save string (Chinaski), Wednesday, 25 September 2019 20:42 (four years ago) link

three weeks pass...

Still love the song "Redesigning Women" so much

Noticed it was cowritten by Highwomen member Natalie Hemby and a guy named Rodney Clawson -- both of whom (along with Luke Dick) also wrote Miranda Lambert's Pink Sunglasses... another kickass song!

I don't know (Luke) Dick about country songwriters, but I gotta check out more of Clawson & Hemby's tunes

I also note that Dick & Hemby (+KM) wrote the song I most liked from last year's Kacey Musgraves album:
