I know we don't have a president where I'm from, but if we had one, I'm pretty sure I'd think one of her biggest responsibilities would be being up to date on potential catastrophic natural disasters.

I am with DJP. Blow us up

You're all turning into Chuck Heston at the end of the second Apes movie.

If the Grifter was doing the same shit with the demeanor of Dubya, would you be less angry at him? Seems like it.

yes if he had a totally different personality people wouldn't be as repulsed by his personality, great insight

I hated Dubya's demeanor!

i'd suggest valuing his personality over his actions, or equal to them, is unproductive, Granny.

People (esp Dems) in general hated Dubya less or they would've turned on Michelle Obama for being such a pal to him by now.

This is addled logic. You're judging how much we loathe the worst president of our lifetimes by his participation in the usual post-presidency kumbaya?

can't parse that

but i'm glad you agree W was even worse

You're saying, "Dems can't possibly hate him if he pals around w/Michelle O," which uh

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Friday, 6 September 2019 20:08 (four years ago) link

nice try, i'm not gonna get banned during the baseball playoffs again...

btw Jimmy Carter is heroic for generally shitting on the usual post-presidency kumbaya, for which he is apparently hated by all the other ex-occupants.

I agree that history will probably look upon Dubya as a worse president than Trump was but I at least was able to muster an ounce of sympathy for him, he was dealt a bad hand and got a ton of bad advice from the wrong people. Iraq was a disaster of historical proportions but lets face it, it was supported by a majority of Congress (including the 2016 Democratic nominee) and a good portion of the media as well. If this version of Trump became president in 2000 I feel like things would have gone even worse. Like I shudder to think what could've happened if 9/11 happened on his watch.

Also I think it's important to note that demeanor does matter, the way Trump's given half the country permission to openly dismiss any criticism whatsoever and act like they're being victimized 24/7 is something we're going to be seeing the effects of for generations. Maybe it's because I was a teenager who knew jack shit about politics during Dubya's first term but I don't recall there being a problem convincing people that 2 plus 2 was 4

who he specifically chose to assist and advise him. that bad hand was largely self-dealt.

there *are* instances; many.

Grifter could be worse if there's 8 years.

W was more immediately destructive on a global scale, but Trump has been much worse in terms of undermining long-standing institutions and norms and causing daily psychic dread.

institutions like the federal election commission and the EPA tho

they don't want president baby to suffer the indignity of only getting 90% of the primary vote.

this is hilarious, extra-funny since it's twitter grifter Joe Walsh upset about getting marginalised, and good news for the unlikelihood of there being anyone vaguely competent from the GOP on the ticket

Eh, the whole run-up to the Iraq War really felt like people insisting a thousand times zero was a lot. Every week a new piece of 'evidence' that Hussein had done 9/11 with nuclear weapons from Nigeria, and nothing ever added up, but people insisted there was too much smoke.

so does that mean you think the left, generally speaking, isn't getting distracted by a bunch of bullshit lately and by lately I mean the last two or three years?

I remember reading these threads in 2004, 2005 and seeing lots of really long and thoughtful posts and actually learning things. from seemingly educated, knowledgable people. Isn't it sad that my way of asking for that is to chip in some of the shit I hate? I don't get it either but here I am

del griffith, Saturday, 7 September 2019 01:47 (four years ago) link

does that mean you think the left, generally speaking, isn't getting distracted by a bunch of bullshit lately and by lately I mean the last two or three years?

I'm not sure who you mean by the left or what you consider to be distractions. I do think that the way the US system works that it becomes very hard for ordinary citizens to accomplish much between elections, when the people occupying high office are not inclined to assist you in your goals.

Scanning the real state of politics in the USA the past two or three years, I think the mid-term elections went pretty well from the standpoint of taking the punch bowl away from the Republicans by re-taking the House.

The Senate is heavily weighted to reward small rural states with disproportionate power and it only exposes a third of its seats to the will of the people during any election, so that was and remains a much harder nut to crack. The president was rebuked but not removed by the mid terms.

There have been suits filed and injunctions issued over as many of Trump's policy moves as could have been filed. The president's erratic, childish, petulant and bullying behavior is correctly called such by the left. Ridicule is a decent political weapon, too.

I'm not sure what more the left was supposed to do during the past few years that you think would have allowed 'the poor and powerless to win', considering the 2016 election results?
