really enjoying my first ever play through of SMW2: yoshi's island. switch is perfect platform for it

bummer

Since launching in September 2018, Nintendo Switch Online has added several new NES games each month. As of this month, that's ending.

"More NES games will be added in the future, but those releases will not adhere to a regular schedule," a Nintendo representative told Business Insider in an email this week.

Unfortunately, the same thing applies to Super Nintendo games. "More Super NES games will be added after launch, but those releases will not adhere to a regular schedule," the representative said.

oh well. as long as the ones they do release are good picks, i'll be happy. i'm playing breath of fire now, and looking forward to beating SMW2 for the first time

they just gave us 20 games this month so not surprising

there's still the DKCs and earthbound and smrpg for snes stuff they can add, dunno what else. most of the big e.g. squaresoft or capcom games have a ported version on the market already so they aren't gonna get the rights to give those out for 'free'

smw2 is my favorite mario game by far

diamonddave85 (diamonddave85), Saturday, 7 September 2019 19:58 (four years ago) link

i borrowed it from a friend way back in the day and got really far, but never to the end! really looking forward to that journey.

same deal with super metroid (a rental, never beat). i just started that today as well. i'm not sure if it's a repeatable bug or just something weird that happened to me, but be careful about changing the default control layout. for some reason, after i got the morphing ball it only let me turn into morphball a handful of times, then completely stopped working. i was unable to get out of a nearby room as a result so i had to start over (losing about...8 minutes of progress)

SMW2 is great gameplay-wise but it's very... garish

I am a bit too excited about being able to finish Link to the Past finally - what a game that is

Unrelatedly, how are the people who bought Mario Maker 2 finding it a few months down the line? I'm still keen to buy

this slippery tower dungeon is kicking my ass.

i looked at the mirror after the wizard disappeared bc i am stupid.

ilxors are still exuberant (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 9 September 2019 18:37 (four years ago) link

i had never played super metroid before, but i got to the morph ball and then couldn't figure out how to use it. hadn't changed the controls at all.

na (NA), Monday, 9 September 2019 19:53 (four years ago) link

you press down to crouch, then press down again. that's how it's supposed to work at least. unless you got the same weird glitch i mentioned upthread? i thought it had messed up because i had changed the default controls, but maybe the port is just f'd up? fwiw, after i restarted (and left the control scheme unaltered) the morph ball has been fine

I am also Harl (Karl Malone), Monday, 9 September 2019 19:58 (four years ago) link

hadn't changed the controls at all.

oh sorry, duh - obviously you saw that post.

so does pressing down twice work, then?

I am also Harl (Karl Malone), Monday, 9 September 2019 19:59 (four years ago) link

dunno, i'll try if i ever play it again. would be nice if the instruction books were accessible through the app though.

I can't figure out the first dragon on demon's crest. What is happening?

ilxors are still exuberant (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 9 September 2019 20:14 (four years ago) link

also, the super fx games are not playable

ilxors are still exuberant (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 9 September 2019 20:19 (four years ago) link

you have to run to the right at the start (as soon as it lets you start moving), then just attack it several times and it will go down.

i had fun with demon's crest until i got to the open world/~~MODE 7 Whoooa Trippy~~ mode and had no idea where to go next

stunt race FX seems like it could be fun, hypothetically, but it is really not enjoyable to play a racing game at 10 fps

I am also Harl (Karl Malone), Monday, 9 September 2019 20:20 (four years ago) link

Hmmm it seemed like my attacks weren't hurting it. Thought I had to trick it somehow.

if it's under $100, i'll probably get it. i could use some exercise, and i prefer to level up as i do so. i like the rpg-lite format. the only thing that worried me in the video was the idea of being forced to run in place to travel in the game (i don't want to piss off my downstairs neighbors). but then i saw that there's an option to turn that off. so i'm all in!

So what's this Amnesia port that just launched on Switch? Horror game, I assume?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 12 September 2019 20:20 (four years ago) link

yeah Amnesia: The Dark Descent dates from the beginning of the indie boom, no idea what those games are like though

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Thursday, 12 September 2019 21:12 (four years ago) link

The horrorest! Definitely worth a look if that’s at all your vibe.

Wandering about a haunted mansion solving puzzles and trying to recover your lost memories to uncover what horrible things once went on. You’re basically defenceless. it revolves around trying to conserve your reserves of light (lamp oil, essentially) cuz the more time you spend in the dark the crazieeeeerrr things get.

The sound design is freaky and awesome, lots of creaking, moaning and groaning. Best played in the dark with headphones.

Xp

Sounds like Resident Evil. (I just bought Resident Evil 7 for my PS4; hard to say no to $15).

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 12 September 2019 21:50 (four years ago) link

Speaking of RE, I’m not a huge player of the series but that 4 vs 1 assymetrical multiplayer game they recently announced looks really promising

I am also Harl (Karl Malone), Thursday, 12 September 2019 22:55 (four years ago) link

My understanding, having played only bits of the ones that were on GameCube (4? Zero? Remake?), is that as the series goes on, particularly after 4, they become more and more action-gamey, which fans of the series (who preferred scares and exploration) didn't like. Right? 7 was received as a return to form, of sorts, I thought. This multiplayer seems more action-y again, or at least like Saw, or that Friday the 13th game. I dunno, I guess it could be cool. I still don't have (or want) PS4 online, though I did get the free year of Nintendo Online, which I may or may not ever use.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 13 September 2019 01:50 (four years ago) link

7 is backwoods horror iirc

ciderpress, Friday, 13 September 2019 02:11 (four years ago) link

It's still wandering around in a big house/mansion/whatever, solving puzzles, managing items, figuring out the story and avoiding monsters. But yeah, I think its antagonists are very Texas Chainsaw/Rob Zombie rednecks.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 13 September 2019 02:52 (four years ago) link

re7 is fantastic, top tier RE

adam, Friday, 13 September 2019 02:52 (four years ago) link

4 and 2 are S tier so like 1,3,7 are A tier

adam, Friday, 13 September 2019 02:53 (four years ago) link

i also thought of the friday the 13th game (which i haven't played - only watched on twitch) - it looks like that, only more fun.

Playing the DQXI demo which is v meaty, a little fuzzy in handheld mode but I'm 100% on board for this

cdkeys have UK eshop credit for 20% off at the moment, £30 for £23.99

i don't think i've ever played a DQ game. they all seemed pretty generic i guess? was i wrong?

they're all very traditional jrpgs with good production values. they invented the genre in the 80s and haven't really deviated from that formula.
