I still have hope, so that's on me. I don't know why sometimes.

Mickey Callaway said he intentionally walked Andrew Knapp today to get to Bryce Harper because he wanted to force the Phillies to remove reliever Mike Morin from the game.

I will admit: I thought the combination of the Cubs sweeping the Mets and the Nationals engineering that 11-10 comeback last week basically ended the Mets' season.

I was wrong. The Mets are alive and well. It's the team that won't die.

Lagares and Nido must be one of the most unlikely back-to-back HR combos this year.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 12 September 2019 19:16 (four years ago) link

Getting swept in Miami didn’t end the season. Falling 11 games under .500 didn’t end the season. Neither did losing six straight at home, nor blowing a six-run lead in the ninth.

Improbably, inexplicably, incredibly, the Mets are contenders.

Will probably need to win at least 8 out of the final 10, and get a lot of help, but there is a chance with CIN & MIA coming up.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 19 September 2019 21:24 (four years ago) link

Had no idea there was a Mets hall of fame committee.

Ed Kranepool should be considered (Wright will get there eventually)

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 22:20 (four years ago) link

fwiw, much respect to the mets this year

they did some good things; they did some things that didn't work out. but they fuckin tried! extending degrom, letting alonso start on opening day, not trading syndergaard -- these are all good things! the deal with seattle doesn't look too great at the moment, but it was an effort to improve rather than purely dump salary. getting stroman was bold! they maybe *should* have traded wheeler at the deadline but it's awesome that they didn't.

41-25 in the second half is promising! mickey doesn't seem like a great manager, but the season has turned out a lot better than i thought it would three months ago

mookieproof, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 23:23 (four years ago) link

Well... Stroman had an answer to Cashman’s comments that he wouldn’t have been a “difference-maker”... I would have retweeted him but I have the honor of being one of the many baseball writers he has blocked online... pic.twitter.com/iQvDTXoVl6

If only they'd put Diaz on the IL with bubonic plague on August 1.

Kranepool IS in the Mets HOF, Gill, how could he not be? Had most of the career offensive leads until Wright came along.

Oh I meant they should consider retiring Kranepool’s number next, and then retire Wright’s after that.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 25 September 2019 01:55 (four years ago) link

I agree with a lot of what Mookie says upthread. Great turn around in the second half, wish they could have gotten it together faster. JD Davis has been a great find, and his frazzled post-game walk off speech was one of the highlights of the year for me. So many concerns about pitching going forward (aside from Degrom/Lugo/Wilson) but I am looking forward to seeing the young core of hitters develop for the next 3 or so years.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 25 September 2019 02:11 (four years ago) link

Right now the Mets are the dictionary definition of mediocre. They seem intent on losing all their remaining games, which would appropriately leave them at .500.

You can't "get it together" when you have the worst bullpen in the franchise's last 50 years.

Name to watch if #Mets fire Callaway: Carlos Beltrán. Bi-lingual. Strong communicator. Played for #Mets from 2005 to ‘11. Interviewed for #Yankees’ job that went to Boone. One Mets exec, Allard Baird, was his GM with #Royals. Another, Omar Minaya, signed him when he was NYM GM.
