NL defense loserboard:

i see eric hosmer is having another gold glove-caliber season

I am also Harl (Karl Malone), Sunday, 8 September 2019 00:05 (four years ago) link

the only NL team not in that list are the marlins

I am also Harl (Karl Malone), Sunday, 8 September 2019 00:07 (four years ago) link

idk; i'm with jersey al here

i don't doubt that these guys are bad fielders (although i thought goldie was supposed to be good?) but i have a hard time accepting that being a bad first baseman -- who still presumably catches most of the balls thrown to him -- is as damaging as, say, being a bad outfielder

(pedro alvarez is the exception to this, of course)

mookieproof, Sunday, 8 September 2019 02:33 (four years ago) link

lotta 1B in that list

k3vin k., Sunday, 8 September 2019 05:47 (four years ago) link

Josh Bell is a special defensive player because he somehow makes being a bad first basemen seen just as bad, if not more damaging, than a bad outfielder. And I say this as someone who has watched Jose Martinez play a ton of right field.

I am also Harl (Karl Malone), Sunday, 8 September 2019 06:01 (four years ago) link

bell was an outfielder in the minors, if you can imagine

mookieproof, Sunday, 8 September 2019 06:05 (four years ago) link

bad first basemen are worse than bad outfielders!

k3vin k., Sunday, 8 September 2019 06:18 (four years ago) link

1B is the easiest position iirc

k3vin k., Sunday, 8 September 2019 06:18 (four years ago) link

Thanks mook, and that designated hitter's WAR is artificially inflated because there is no "penalty" for their lack of defensive ability is also pretty cringeworthy when sorting these lists (not Karl's of course).

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Sunday, 8 September 2019 13:01 (four years ago) link

DHs definitely get a "penalty" on defense - theirs is the largest of all!

I am also Harl (Karl Malone), Sunday, 8 September 2019 16:26 (four years ago) link

(which is why i made that list NL only)

I am also Harl (Karl Malone), Sunday, 8 September 2019 16:26 (four years ago) link

but yeah, it's hard to compare players from different positions in a "worst defense" kind of list, because of those automatically applied positional factors. (so i shouldn't have done it above - WHOOPS!) but they can still be useful when applied position-by-position. here's just 1B:

goldy near the top of the list, from that perspective

I am also Harl (Karl Malone), Sunday, 8 September 2019 16:30 (four years ago) link

and in contrast, the catchers:

White Sox SS Tim Anderson has gotten some attention the last couple of days when he emerged with enough PAs to qualify for the AL batting title. He's in a concurrent chase: The record for fewest walks by a batting champion is 16, set by Zack Wheat in 1918. Anderson has 11.

I *just* learned that Adalberto Mondesi (who I drafted high in all my leagues) is the son of Raul Mondesi.

Finishes needed for 5-way wild card tie at 87-75 (not that I am rooting for this, but I am definitely rooting for this): #Cubs 10-8, #Brewers 11-7, #Phillies 12-6, #Diamondbacks 12-5, #Mets 13-5. MLB would have to make it up because nothing on books on how to handle 5-way tie.

Rodney hits Culberson in the face with a pitch while he was squared to bunt. Oh man, this looks bad. Damn. Wash is comforting him, while trainer holds towel to face.

And was called a strike rather than HBP. Snitker loses his mind, gets tossed. I'm only listening to the game, can't watch it, so I want to see the replay.

WmC, Saturday, 14 September 2019 22:32 (four years ago) link

Culberson could probably find the plate easier than Rodney right now.

Markakis didn't need any rehab to get his swing back -- he's 6 for 9 last night and today. And he had 7 weeks off in the hottest part of the season.

Cards 2-8
Nats 4-7
Brewers 5-5
Cubs 5-5
Phils 7-3
Mets 8-2

40th homer for acuña; third player to do so in age-21 season or younger

also has 37 SB

mookieproof, Thursday, 19 September 2019 17:11 (four years ago) link

Kinda nuts that the player with the quasi 40-40 season only ranks 46th in wrc+.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 19 September 2019 17:21 (four years ago) link

he's got a ton of homers and a decent number of walks, but he also doesn't have nearly as many XBHs as i'd have thought, which gives him a slugging % barely past .500.

omar little, Thursday, 19 September 2019 17:35 (four years ago) link
