Speaking of Peaks-a-like shows: I found the first season of Northern Exposure for 25p a couple of days ago. That was compared to TP a lot, wasn’t it? I don’t think I ever watched it.

VM is more bad-ass PI (meaning a cop without a police structure) than sherlock-style clue detection for sure

Veronica's deep, deep damage really coming to the forefront in this season made for fascinating viewing, I thought, great writing and great exploration of the character from Kristen Bell.

Yep, and it helped them to sidestep the most obvious/familiar potential sources of drama btwn Veronica and Logan (ie infidelity, Logan being a fuckup, etc)

I don't see how they can do veronica dirtier than they did this season but if they make another I'm sure they'll figure out a way b/c the genre probably demands that she won't get a break

it's like Sherlock Holmes, there's no need to show Veronica progressing (the death knell of many awesome genre shows)... she can just be a deeply damaged badass over and over again

I super hope they don't bring back Piz or dunkindonut next season.

Northern Exposure intermittently had a supernatural weirdness that could be Twin Peaks-y I guess.

It started in 1990 - twin peaks was perhaps an obvious touchstone (though I guess I’ll have to watch it to find out if it was the writers or the critics doing the touching)

Ha, reviewing the first two eps, I had forgotten how much the show emphasized beatdowns as a model for adolescent conflict resolution.

halfway through this new season and I'm loving it - it's aged exactly as it should, perfectly in sync with its audience.
One small thing though, has Weevil always looked like a pre-teen dressed up as 90's gangsta for Halloween? Or did they make it worse by trying to age the character?

I'm avoiding the recent part of this thread because I haven't been able to see this yet- but could some kind person have a look at this DVD on Amazon and see if it looks like s4 from the description etc? It's labelled season 1 but released 22 October 2019. Thanks!

well this was a ball!
I really enjoyed watching it but also had this weird feeling of unease a lot of the time. Maybe it was Logan's 'keeping in the anger' or maybe it was all the adult dialogue which sat oddly at first (I can't remember if the movie was like that), or maybe I couldn't quite get a feel for some of the characters? idk.

trying to do a rewatch and made it through s2 fine but s3 really feels like work. I hate Piz !

piz is too ridiculous a creation for me to hate

or maybe not ridiculous in and of himself so much as i think it's ridiculous that someone wrote him and put him in a show

the kiss scene between piz and veronica is all time, despite his shortcomings

found myself unexpectedly rooting for Piz in the VM movie though! He was nice and clean and cute there compared to the still volatile Logan.

iirc 2 mainly suffers from the long format season, so much filler and the stakes just go up and up and up until it's even more ridiculous than usual

all relationships on this show dwarfed completely by veronica and keith's. although i am fond of veronica/wallace early seasons friendship.

Logan is so f-ing tortured and hot in the movie. You can't blame her for throwing over bland NY guy even while your higher brain is going "NNNNOOOOOOO!" as she caroms right off a cliff.

I liked season 4's exploration of that aspect of the Veronica/Logan dynamic

Liz works for Ira Glass in the movie, right? He’s not even living in the same universe as Veronica

I haven’t seen 4 yet. But I loved s2, flawed as it may be. S3 tho... the feminists vs comedians stuff ... the dean who Veronica has to charm... that I’m supposed to care if piz gets a radio show... the weird Stanford prison thing ... the only good plot so far (I’m just a few eps in) is Keith at the cabin (RIP Kendall)

Also piz in the movie might as well be a plot device designed to irritate Veronica who clearly is better off w Logan chemistry

I kinda admire Rob Thomas for the honesty of directly admitting that he mainly killed off Logan cause he had no concept of how VM could be a continuing, interesting story if Veronica is happy/content

Unfortunately he seems to have misjudged interest—Are we getting a season 5? Man reviews of s4 were way more scathing than i realized
