Fully down for a Not New Year's Eve thing.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 27 August 2019 02:03 (four years ago) link

I’m usually out there sometime during that timE.

... (Eazy), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 02:05 (four years ago) link

late to game, here to rep Placerville area or Newcastle outside sacramento: tres horsey, v pastoral old timey small towns, 45 min or less from city

cons -Sacramento summer sucks aasssss & lacks cool factor (literally & figuratively) of Sonoma/Marin County/Bay Area. but downtown is v vibrant now, esp in past 5-10 years, lots of growth etc.

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 02:36 (four years ago) link

oh and pville can be kinda rednecky but folks by and large are v nice

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 02:36 (four years ago) link

It’s waaaaaay too hot (for me) in Placerville- no way could I do 110 in the summer

the public eating of beans (Sparkle Motion), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 02:59 (four years ago) link

Yeah I am specifically seeking better weather than hot and humid DC. Like, it is kind of a driving factor. That and the mosquitos.

And the lawyers. So many lawyers.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 03:03 (four years ago) link

no humidity, just pure unadulterated fireball-in-the-sky heat

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 03:06 (four years ago) link

lol

Dan S, Tuesday, 27 August 2019 03:08 (four years ago) link

entirely accurate (xp)

xpost, having grown up back east, I still marvel at the lack of bugs during the summers in the bay area.

that's not my post, Tuesday, 27 August 2019 05:23 (four years ago) link

I used to dislike southern california based on nothing but I like it well enough now. Pasadena is very nice. However, if you're trying to get away from heat, you probably don't want to live there.

akm, Tuesday, 27 August 2019 12:46 (four years ago) link

Even the bay area is getting hotter in the summer, but it's tolerable and I'm convinced that the more or less temperate climate is only going to make it more desireable over the next 40 years as 3/4 of the country bursts into flames.

akm, Tuesday, 27 August 2019 12:47 (four years ago) link

Santa Rosa gets pretty hot in summer, doesn’t it? The further inland you go, the worse it gets

just1n3, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 18:57 (four years ago) link

Yep, it does, and Healdsburg/Cloverdale even moreso. Closer to the coast (Forestville, Guerneville, Sebastopol) stay a bit milder.

And the nice thing even in the hottest parts of the county is that a) the heat’s totally dry and b) those summer days can have a high of 100 but a low of 55, so it really does fully cool off every night.

... (Eazy), Wednesday, 28 August 2019 19:02 (four years ago) link

b) those summer days can have a high of 100 but a low of 55, so it really does fully cool off every night.

"can have" does not equal "always have" ... unless you are specifically talking Sonoma County ... further south, this is definitely not the case

sarahell, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 19:24 (four years ago) link

I was born and raised in Sebastopol, relocated to Brooklyn but am still back to visit my folks in Santa Rosa every year or so, can cosign everything Eazy said. Lots of my friends moved back to 'slow-coma' county in the past year after their kids were born. It's edenic behind the redwood curtain.

I_Got_Loaded, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 19:39 (four years ago) link

i think Santa Cruz is a great suggestion. Further south, but friends live in a little town near santa barbara called carpiteria. supposedly very nice. don't know if it quite ticks all your boxes though. parts of LA are awesome, but i really don't know enough to make suggestions. stear clear of the inland empire though. it pretty sucky

I think it's Carpinteria. Were you thinking of:

Santa Barbara is *way* farther south

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 19:51 (four years ago) link

LMBO at Carpiteria, still not sure if that was a troll post or not, well done.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 28 August 2019 19:53 (four years ago) link

I've found the problem.

Reno pros: cheap, close to Tahoe, "under the radar cool"

Or so I hear. Friends move there and people nod and say "yeah Reno is actually supposed to be pretty cool." idk

but everybody calls me, (lukas), Thursday, 29 August 2019 14:42 (four years ago) link

I am not moving to fucking reno

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 29 August 2019 14:47 (four years ago) link

Yeah well for better or for worse spouse is a tech bro so we do need to go somewhere where he can do that. I figure we will both end up working at Kaiser.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Thursday, 29 August 2019 14:49 (four years ago) link

On cursory inspection, Santa Cruz looks like Coney Island?

Does coney island have redwoods? Locals dont generally bother w the boardwalk

Οὖτις, Thursday, 29 August 2019 14:57 (four years ago) link

Santa Cruz is pretty small and it's two most notable features are probably the university and the boardwalk. But essentially it's a small beach town (with all that that implies) on the edge of a redwood forest.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 29 August 2019 15:02 (four years ago) link

xp - hey, we fucked w/the boardwalk on $2 Tuesdays! ... Santa Cruz was more scruffy boho prior to the earthquake in 1989. It's gotten way more bougie since the extensive earthquake damage allowed developers to gentrify the fuck out of it. One of the best used record/books stores, Logos, that I remember from my teen years, closed in the past few years ...

sarahell, Thursday, 29 August 2019 15:07 (four years ago) link

I went to school there so would never call myself a "local" (altho DJI can def claim that)

I have many records that still have the LOGOS price sticker stamped on them
