don cab

Seany's too Dyche to mention (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 22 August 2019 17:46 (four years ago) link

haha I always loved that cover!

“Hakuna Matata,” a nihilist philosophy (One Eye Open), Thursday, 22 August 2019 18:03 (four years ago) link

I'd love to know how each album sold just to see if there's a drop off on which we can blame the cover!

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Thursday, 22 August 2019 18:11 (four years ago) link

it's a funny cover but it doesn't relate to the music one bit, not even ironically

frame casual (dog latin), Thursday, 22 August 2019 19:23 (four years ago) link

I dont remember it getting as good reviews in the UK as Millions did. Or maybe that was only nme. Can anyone remember?

Also why did Don Cab get hardly any UK coverage?

Some great albums on this list, but Mezzanine is always gonna be an all-timer for me.

Maybe someone explained this already but what's the difference between Part 1 and Part 2 on these? Is there a theme I'm missing (other than that for '97 most of the good records were on the list with 'Homogenic' in it)?

Soundslike, Friday, 23 August 2019 08:34 (four years ago) link

Kerr likes to put more canonical stuff on one list and more obscure stuff on the other list

The World According To.... (Michael B), Friday, 23 August 2019 09:11 (four years ago) link

never realised what a year this was. I think I'm going don caballero again

After the early polls there was complaints we left out 'canonical' albums so we have 1 list with most of the canon and another with our actual pet faves which the polls were supposed to be about rather than canon.

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Friday, 23 August 2019 14:26 (four years ago) link

and as mike only wants to do one poll for 1999 some of your faves may be missing

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Friday, 23 August 2019 14:44 (four years ago) link

1 poll ok with everyone?

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Saturday, 24 August 2019 00:14 (four years ago) link

As long as “69 Love Songs” is on it!

I think that's one mike and i both agree with

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Either Autechre or Massive Attack. 1998 me would have picked the latter in a heartbeat.

Literally my choice too. Btw, Music Has the Right to Children is sorely missing from these lists.

octobeard, Tuesday, 27 August 2019 05:01 (four years ago) link

my bad, it's in the first one!

octobeard, Tuesday, 27 August 2019 05:03 (four years ago) link

went with calexico, it's not the best album on the list but they deserve a vote dammit

jakey mo collier (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 14:31 (four years ago) link

that Calexico one is a fantastic record

Captain ACAB (Neil S), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 14:33 (four years ago) link

You've got yer LP5s and yer MHTRTCs but of course Soup is the connoisseur's choice of 1998 IDM / ambient techno classic.

False. I can't remember a single thing about it.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 27 August 2019 15:11 (four years ago) link

this is your last chance to vote for niche albums

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 16:00 (four years ago) link

I played the hell out of that Mark Lanegan record at the time & havent really thought of it since then, curious to dig it out this week & see if it holds up

“Hakuna Matata,” a nihilist philosophy (One Eye Open), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 16:10 (four years ago) link

I've heard virtually none of these, way off the alt rock train by '98, but Mezzanine.

confusementalism (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 18:00 (four years ago) link

mezzanine is quite a good choice here and will probably win, i suppose.

je est un autre, l'enfer c'est les autres (alex in mainhattan), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 18:02 (four years ago) link

nah, Silver Jews will win

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Tuesday, 27 August 2019 18:07 (four years ago) link

i voted for american water so if it doesn't win it will not be my fault.

Couple of shroomy jam bands look sort out of place on this list.

Not surprised by the winner or even the order of the top 5

octobeard, Thursday, 29 August 2019 02:54 (four years ago) link

yes agree

Dan S, Thursday, 29 August 2019 02:57 (four years ago) link

Even with the many time-honoured classics on this list, my 1998 #1 is still The High Llamas’ Cold and Bouncy (Dots and Loops’ sister album).
