gender preferences when it comes to leisure activities may very well be a thing but it's 100% not a thing i'm interested in discussing on ilx lol

everything mentioned in here is very clearly a video game, if there's a grey area it's in VNs

ciderpress, Thursday, 22 August 2019 14:40 (four years ago) link

In other news, it's over a year since the Smart Dollhouse aspect of Fortnite brought in its first billion.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 22 August 2019 14:41 (four years ago) link

lol My daughter is now, with no prompting but hilarious timing, playing Mario Kart for the first time in months.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 22 August 2019 14:42 (four years ago) link

my daughters play games, goal-oriented (splatoon, mario odyssey) and non-goal-oriented (stardew valley), all the time. guess they're just cooler than your daughters.

na (NA), Thursday, 22 August 2019 14:42 (four years ago) link

Totally possible!

Speaking of amazing timing, I literally just got an email from Nintendo saying "We wanted to let you know that the components you sent to Nintendo for repair have been received." So it took a week or so after sending in my controller to get a confirmation that they got my controller!

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 22 August 2019 14:44 (four years ago) link

ditto. i gave up yesterday and ordered a cheap controller.

na (NA), Thursday, 22 August 2019 14:48 (four years ago) link

I don't know any boys their age or younger who play with dolls or dollhouses

i played nonstop with dollhouses as a kid and so did all my friends!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 22 August 2019 14:54 (four years ago) link

Still haven't broken down and got the Pro controller yet, but it feels inevitable

Nhex, Thursday, 22 August 2019 14:55 (four years ago) link

xps I was gonna say Fortnite is massive and ultimately a wacky dollhouse with shooting players barely care about

Nhex, Thursday, 22 August 2019 14:56 (four years ago) link

pro controller is really good other than the dpad being too sensitive for fighting games/puzzle games that need precision

ciderpress, Thursday, 22 August 2019 14:57 (four years ago) link

All kids play with dolls & dollhouses, it's just that the dolls marketed to boys are called "action figures."

IMO games are all "Interesting Situation generators" and predefined goals and competition are just means to create the Interesting Situation, and by no means the only ones games can use.

I have come to terms with the fact that the Pro Controller dpad sucks, and I'm thinking about getting one of those 8bitdo ones. They look pretty good.

Auld Drink of Misery (zchyrs), Thursday, 22 August 2019 14:59 (four years ago) link

I'm hoping that after my controller is repaired it'll play better. I use the pro exclusively when I play on the TV, joycons in portable mode, but the drift issue was a PIA.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 22 August 2019 15:00 (four years ago) link

i get the point, but Fortnite is def a shooter first and the crafty bits are not rly dollhouse-y c'mon

circa1916, Thursday, 22 August 2019 15:01 (four years ago) link

Another example, I never played Minecraft, but my older kid sometimes did. But only building. (There's more to the game, right?) She still sometimes builds with friends online.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 22 August 2019 15:03 (four years ago) link

there's more to the game in the sense that the original game is a survival game but i think most people get tired of that and just play in free build mode

ciderpress, Thursday, 22 August 2019 15:09 (four years ago) link

The bits where you pay money / complete challenges to get new clothes / skins / handbags / moves are pretty f'ing dollhousey, IMO.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 22 August 2019 15:29 (four years ago) link

the point is anyone who plays any video game of any kind is a fucking dork

na (NA), Thursday, 22 August 2019 15:43 (four years ago) link

otm

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 22 August 2019 15:44 (four years ago) link

i mean in most games you complete challenges (or nowadays pay money) to unlock skins, clothes, and stuff?

xxp

also lol NA otm

circa1916, Thursday, 22 August 2019 15:45 (four years ago) link

lol yeah, if anything I suspect my girls are If anything too cool for me. I'm the dork for sure.

I've got video game madness again I don't want to stop thinking about video games

I’ve got dollhouse madness

Evan, Thursday, 22 August 2019 19:07 (four years ago) link

I ordered a second console so I can play again. And (theoretically) my kid and I will get to use local two-player on our own screens. Really looking forward to it.

El Tomboto, Sunday, 25 August 2019 02:41 (four years ago) link

My nephew was over this weekend and introduced me to Splatoon. Rules!

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 25 August 2019 03:31 (four years ago) link

make sure you get the new revision that just came out with the much longer battery life, if you can

ciderpress, Sunday, 25 August 2019 12:01 (four years ago) link

Oh I did, memorized the different model numbers to be sure

El Tomboto, Sunday, 25 August 2019 15:14 (four years ago) link

hmm astral chain getting really positive reviews

ciderpress, Monday, 26 August 2019 13:24 (four years ago) link

Have any reviewers called it "off the chain?" I need to know so I can either shame or congratulate them, I'm conflicted

icy bike chain rain (zchyrs), Monday, 26 August 2019 17:43 (four years ago) link

OK, fwiw just got a tracking number that my Joy-con is on its way back, so that's a pretty fast turnaround.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 26 August 2019 18:07 (four years ago) link

every reviewer has called it that, by sheer coincidence

ciderpress, Monday, 26 August 2019 18:07 (four years ago) link

xp to Josh,
I imagine that there must be a good rpg (with more story than zelda) that your daughters would eat up

ilm jive mind (FlopsyDuck), Monday, 26 August 2019 18:09 (four years ago) link

or adventure game. My little sister eventually got into games like Monkey Island, Paper Mario, and Chrono Trigger

ilm jive mind (FlopsyDuck), Monday, 26 August 2019 18:13 (four years ago) link

switch should have a paper mario game, hopefully that's in the pipe

I think they're just not that interested, tbh. Sometimes these things skip generations, and they have plenty of other distractions. I just hope my younger one (not that young anymore) is still interested in Animal Crossing by the time it finally releases for the Switch.

Curiously (or not) they do seem to enjoy watching me play games. Of course, I (and obviously countless others) enjoy watching others play games online, so that's not unusual. Another random data point is that when I was playing Mario Kart with my nephew this weekend, he was really into watching the instant replays at the end, whereas I never gave a poop about that.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 26 August 2019 18:31 (four years ago) link

hmm astral chain getting really positive reviews
sounds good, someone here be the guinea pig

Nhex, Monday, 26 August 2019 18:58 (four years ago) link

I got it on preorder lol, really looking foward to it

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 26 August 2019 19:10 (four years ago) link

yeah i'm gonna pick it up next week if i finish judgment this weekend

ciderpress, Monday, 26 August 2019 19:33 (four years ago) link

I haven't played Super Mario Odyssey yet but the Dr. Mario app loads a close-up picture of the new Mario and his eyes are kinda creepy. They didn’t need the hyper-realistic lines in the iris. A blue gradient is good enough.

Transferring my user data to the new Switch: painless

Re-establishing my kid’s ability to play her favorite games on the old Switch now that mine is the “primary:” hard brexit

The lack of qualified negotiators is going to lead to food and medicine shortages at my house. Some industries are already looking for alternative locations

Really mistook which Switch to ditch in this sitch

El Tomboto, Thursday, 29 August 2019 01:25 (four years ago) link

yeah that stuff is very arcane

ciderpress, Thursday, 29 August 2019 01:29 (four years ago) link

Completely corrupted her Minecraft save. Had to blow it all away to get it working again; if she had anything important on local that wasn’t in the Microsoft cloud, I may not survive tomorrow

El Tomboto, Thursday, 29 August 2019 02:42 (four years ago) link

you may have hit the point where your best move is to buy your child’s love back by rebuying all the games.

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Thursday, 29 August 2019 02:45 (four years ago) link

Oh that happened too. Spending another hundo on things I thought we already owned was the easy part
