ils thread for general menswear and men's clothing ish

hello!

waiting for the day when professional media workwear forms a perfect ven with 1989 Mudhoney-just-behind-the-moshpit fan. Basically i need to up my 'best shirts' quotient a bit so the Proper Cloth option is good. AndI need a bit of non-shirt top options, including jumper options, tho i think that's easier. Mind you, terrible state of crewnecks and indeed v-necks in the world sometimes, sloppy necks or blousy hang.

going to go back to japanese websites for other top options, and stop looking at coats are basically a $1000 *look* for red letter days, and not sustainable daily wear.

Spaces I think about moving into:

* Agèd semi-mod who only buys from American Classics and John Simons and stands in the shop chatting all day. Large cap.
* Drunk in a suit with no tie, in a suit all the time even though it's not right for his work or social situations. Thinks he's in the Bad Seeds, actually just sweaty and awkward. Feel like this is basically an alcoholic look, and sadly I've got my drinking under control.
* Something austere and Japanese. Don't really have the vocab to capture this.

I'm older and into minimal, slightly technical stuff made by Outlier, Mission Workshop, occasionally Uniqlo, the Sea to Sky collection released a few years ago from Reigning Champ. I'm not talking Neuromancer-wannabe stuff or anything. I just don't like branding and I like a little function along with form. Solid colors, usually shades of gray, black, and muted colors. Anybody else into this stuff and have any suggestions? I'm specifically looking for a new jacket appropriate for like 30-40 F and button-up shirts that have a boxy or even slightly flared out fit (like a Japanese work shirt) but not big tents meant to hide bellies.

No, and it's kind of funny to reread that post as it sort of makes it seem like I spend a lot of time and money shopping for clothes which I don't. I own a few Outlier pieces, but all of those other places I'm judging by staring at their sites and closing them without buying anything. I recently had to throw out some shirts that had developed huge holes in the backs (probably a result of wearing a backpack every day) too big to ignore, and now I am sort of desperate to find some affordable plain and muted shirts that don't get all stretched out at the bottom because I have weirdly wide hips. I'm thinking about just sizing up a few Taylor Stitch shirts and maybe having them tailored so they don't look all poofy. I still haven't found a jacket, either.

I really like Engineered Garments and I even have some immaculate flannels that I bought a few years ago for a low price, but I just don't know how to wear the stuff without feeling like I look like a total doof.

I strongly relate to guys' struggles on here.

I'm 44 and have been working 100% from home for several years, which means I have zero use for any of the dressy clothes I have, many of which are falling apart or don't fit anyway. But that's left me wearing t-shirts and jeans pretty much every day, and I'm getting real bored with it. It would be nice to find some casual clothes, especially shirts, that are slightly more stylish, but I find most men's fashions to be painfully drab and dull. I'd like something with a bit of color that looks more modern than classic.

Suggestions?

Can anyone recommend business casual (button/oxford) shirts that aren't non-iron but also don't need a ton of ironing? I feel like most non-iron shirts look a little bit cheap or goofy, but the regular dress shirts I've bought lately all look wrinkled after an hour of wear and/or are really hard to iron.

Yeah Lands End shirts are good.

I can iron but generally don't - in my experience if you hang shirts up immediately as they come out of the dryer, they will be fine. Alternatively, hanging them in the bathroom while you shower steams them nicely. So does putting a shirt on right after you get out of a shower.

On some of my shirts - notably Gap linen - the plackets may act up a bit but that's easily rectified.

I have found this to be true with some brands, but I have shirts from both Nordstrom (the John W. Nordstrom line which is supposed to be higher end) and Ledbury (again, supposed to be high end) that don't do this. Granted both were clearance buys so maybe I just got some fabric that turned out to be shitty.

100% cotton oxford shirts need ironing. I can't imagine not doing that. I don't own a dryer though. Maybe the dryer sorta lets out the thousands of deep wrinkles?

I know you said shirts but I’ve found that wearing non-jeans more often than jeans is really key to not feeling like a schlub

I have decent pants I can wear, probably could get more, but yeah, it's the shirts where I'm struggling.

I've kind of semi-given up. wearing some chaotic looks these days. loose pair of black wranglers with hi-tec hiking boots, a navy kappa sweatshirt and a black bomber that doesn't quite go is today's ensemble

i got a henley and flannel shirt from j. crew last weekend. they're nice and i like them.

i'm sure this experience applies to literally no one else but i also work 100% from home and i work out twice a day so i'm pretty much always wearing wolaco tights, rogue t-shirts and nike metcons.

no it applies, i'm like 90% remote for work and the majority of days is just nike or under armour tops, running pants, and light technical jackets. all appropriate for workouts, chores, errands, and being on videoconferences from the shoulders up which are the only things i do monday-thursday.

now that it's cooling off my plan is to get deep into crewneck sweatshirts

i've always used dryers but after a year of living with hippies i grew to appreciate line drying.

imagine my horror after putting out some clothes to dry in my sister's backyard to learn that DRYING CLOTHES OUTSIDE IS FORBIDDEN by the hoa in this shitty prefab muted pantone shade neighborhood. it might literally be the stupidest thing i have ever heard.

This is pretty much me. All of my four/five outfits match, so they are all interchangeable: Five pairs of (mostly Outlier) pants (black, olive/gray, blue/gray, khaki, 1 pair of jeans), about 8 t-shirts with muted colors, 1 lightweight hoodie, and 3-4 button-ups. The hardest to match is the black pants and I won't be buying more of those for this reason. I hand wash my pants and certain button-ups when the weather is nice enough to line dry. (Clothes lines give a place character - fuck that HOA).

I read some article a few years ago by a woman who, for an experiment, wore the same outfit every day for I believe a year. Unsurprisingly, nobody noticed or gave a shit. I'm old, my clothes are purposely boring and highly functional. It's freeing to know that nobody is paying attention to what I wear.

Totally unrelated, does anyone have any experience with Spiewak parkas? I've been sort of eyeing them and thinking about trying to get one off ebay before the winter.

i need boots for the winter. i am looking for something fairly rugged that can hold up against daily exposure to snow, ice, salt but also something i can just wear all day that won't feel too heavy? like i don't want something like the 1964 sorels, which seem like good snow boots but would be something i'd want to change out of as soon as i get to work

i can wear whatever i want at work so it's not that they need to look "professional" but more that i wan't something that is sturdy enough for a midwestern winter but still, like, wearable in most environments
