50. "Black Balloon" By: The Goo Goo Dolls
Ok, so first of all, I'm not a big Goo Goo Dolls fan. I don't really understand this video or the song, so I actually left the room while this was on.

49. "It's Not Right, But It's Okay" By: Whitney Houston
I like this song and video. I remember when it came onto MTV Jams Countdown for the first time. I thought it really had a good message. My only thought was if Whitney would leave a guy who cheated on her, why doesn't she leave Bobby Brown, a guy who beats her?

48. "Steal My Sunshine" By: Len
I like this song and video. Infact, when I saw the video, I got addicted to the song and immediately went out and got the Go! soundtrack with this song on it. Then after listening to parts of Len's CD You Can't Stop The Bum Rush, I bought it at Target for only $7.99! This, of course, was before the song became big and was starting to get radio play. I like their sound, so if you have a few extra bucks, I would suggest investing in Len, before their CD gets into that $12+ range.

47. "Anywhere" By: 112
Ok, this is an interesting song...I don't have much, if anything, to say about it, I mean it's just 112 singing all the different places they can do it...sorry for all of you 112 fans out there.

46. "Millenium" By: Robbie Williams
I like this song, hey, you have to admit that it's catchy. Anyways, the only part that bugs me is that the video looks like it was really cheaply made. After seeing a Take That video awhile ago, I wonder why Robbie chose to make a video that looks like it was filmed with a home camera. But I think it was clever to act like James Bond in the video.

45. "The Kids Aren't Alright" By: The Offspring
First of all, I was never a big fan of The Offspring...then my brother bought Americana. He was obsessed with playing the CD in my car and their sound grew on me. I really like this video, in-particular, because of all the cool special effects.

44. "She's All I Ever Had" By: Ricky Martin
Ok, I admit it, I'm not a big Ricky Martin fan. I did find "Livin' La Vida Loca" catchy, but I didn't rush out and buy his CD. I do, however, like this song and video. I think it's a really pretty ballad and the video has this nice softness to it. The only part I don't like is how obvious it is that Ricky is lip synching!

43. "Where My Girls At?" By: 702
Well, I started watching MTV Jams, because it came on after school and nothing else was on TV. Eventually, I got hooked on the hip-hop/rap stuff. I like this song a lot and it's fun to break into the chorus every now and then...you know?..."Where my girls at? From the front to back. Well is you feelin' that? Then put one hand up..."

42. "No Sex (In The Champagne Room)" By: Chris Rock
I'm glad that Chris Rock decided to parody that dumb "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)" song, if you can call it that. I thought the sunscreen song was good the first 5 times I heard it and then it just got stupid! I think my favorite line from this song is "Cornbread...Ain't nothing wrong with that."

41. "Scar Tissue" By: The Red Hot Chili Peppers
I don't like this video, but that's because I have a weak stomach and don't like blood. I'm not so wimpy that I get sick watching the video, I just don't see the point in it. The song it catchy, but I find myself often wondering what the heck Anthony is singing...and what's with the new short blond hair?

40. "Everything Is Everything" By: Lauryn Hill
I'm not a huge Lauryn Hill fan, like my friend, Sarah, but I do like her. I thought she was pretty cool ever since I saw her in Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit. I knew she was a good singer and when I saw her in The Fugees, I was like "hey, that's the girl from Sister Act!" Anyways, I like this video and the concept. I just wonder how she did all those special effects!? Ok, so I may end up buying her CD for this song and "Ex-Factor."

39. "Someday" By: Sugar Ray
I was not a Sugar Ray fan until I heard "Every Morning" and that convinced my to buy 14:59. "Someday" was always one of my favorite songs on the CD, but I didn't pick it as being their next single. I was surprised at how well it did as a single and I liked the video being in black and white. However, the one camera angle shot under one of the band member's crotches, disturbed me. I hope that there next single will be "Live & Direct" featuring KRS-ONE. That's a cool song!

38. "Holla Holla" By: Ja Rule
Ah...the MTV Jams Countdown staple. All I can say is "Holla holla, anybody just ready to get?" hehe

37. "Zip Lock" By: Lit
I don't know much about Lit or this video. I was surprised to see it on the countdown, but I guess it spent a few days on TRL to make it this high on the countdown.

36. "Whatever" By: Godsmack
I am not a Godsmack fan. Let that be heard now...that's all I have to say about that...pointless screaming.

35. "Unpretty" By: TLC
I love the message in this song and I'm glad that TLC had the nerve to tell society what it has imposed on girls is wrong. I also like that the video features a normal girl, who has learned to worship those bone-skinny models, but she finally realizes that it's wrong and accepts herself. The only part I don't like is Lisa Lopes' rap...I don't understand it. If anyone does would you mind explaining it to me?

34. "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" By: Jordan Knight
This is one of my favorite Jordan Knight songs. I always skip to it when I listen to his CD. When I went to SweetStock II, I remember him singing this song and how pretty it was. It's a great ballad and much better than The Artist's version.

33. "Bailamos" By: Enrique Iglesias (sp?)
Ooh, I love this song, even if I can't understand all of it. It's a good song and the sole reason that I would ever think about buying the Wild Wild West soundtrack..."Bailamos! Let the rhythm take you over, Bailamos!"

32. "Summer Girls" By: LFO
Alright, I admit that I bought the single to this song. It's a catchy tune and sometimes I listen to it when it's on the radio...but I guess now I'm at the phase where I'm starting to get tired of it...it's also ironic, because the way Abercrombie & Fitch markets their products, they would never appeal to the teenyboppers who buy LFO's music...hmm...This song also proves that songs about nothing with a good beat will sell.

31. "Bills, Bills, Bills" By: Destiny's Child
When I first heard this song, I thought "Can Destiny's Child only release songs that are one word three times?" (Remember their first single, "No, No, No"?) Anyways, I really like the message in this song, so are you listening guys? I also found it interesting that the girls in Destiny's Child are all 17 or 18! I would have thought there were in the their 20's!

30. "Crazy" By: Britney Spears
Yes, I am a Britney Spears fan. Not because of her looks, she needs to learn how to wear shirts that cover her stomach! I like her because of her sound and music. I like this song, because it's got a good dance beat and it's fun if you listen really closely to her Louisiana accent in it! "Bay-bee, I'm so into you..."

29. "Jigga What" By: Jay-Z
Yea, another great Jam song! All I can say, "Jigga what? Jigga who? Recognize yo, Jay to the Z."

28. "American Woman" By: Lenny Kravitz
I really like this song and it's one of the songs I listen to the most from my Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me soundtrack (besides "Just The Two Of Us" By: Dr. Evil and Mini-Me). I have yet to hear the original version, but this is a good one.

27. "Almost Doesn't Count" By: Brandy
I like Brandy, she seems like a real down-to-Earth girl. However, I can't stand this song, so I've never really paid attention to the video. I just can't stand how she made this song so airy and you can hear her breathe in when she runs out of breath.

26. "Blue Monday" By: Orgy
I first heard this song and of Orgy, when I got my free CD from American Eagle (I bought enough clothes there). It wasn't a song I liked immediately, but as I listened to it more, it grew on me. However, I still like "Stitches" better.

25. "Look At Me" By: Geri Halliwell
Yes, I'm also a Spice Girls fan. I'm not as bad as I used to be though. About a year or two ago, I would have been one of the first people out to buy Geri's CD. I don't even own it now...I liked the video and how she "buried" Ginger Spice, other than that, I realize why Geri was never given many solos in Spice Girls songs...if you notice in "Look At Me," she doesn't have much of a vocal range and most of the song is just her talking. I'm looking forward to Mel C's (a.k.a. Sporty Spice) solo debut, she's the only Spice Girl who can sing, besides Emma, Baby Spice.

24. "Cowboy" By: Kid Rock
I'm not a huge Kid Rock fan, but I do like some of his music. The best part of this video is when Joe C and Gary Coleman get in a fight. It's hilarious and it makes me think of when Gary was in the video for 'N Sync's "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays." One last note..."I wanna be a cowboy, baby..."

23. "The Hardest Thing" By: 98°
I love this song! I'm going to see 98° in concert on September 10th, here in Lincoln. Well, the first time I heard this song, I didn't understand that the guy in the song was cheating on his wife. I kept thinking "If it's so hard for him to break up with her, then why is he doing it!?" I don't really understand how the whole boxing theme fits into it, but oh well...Drew is still really cute!

22. "My Own Worst Enemy" By: Lit
Like I said before, I'm not a huge Lit fan and what does bowling have to do with it all? Anyways, I do find it amusing that this song was the #1 on the Alternative charts and no one had heard of the band. Then in a few short weeks, it was on the Top 40/Pop charts and suddenly everyone had heard of them...just goes to show, that pop music can span many genres.

21. "Music Of My Heart" By: 'N Sync and Gloria Estefan
I LOVE THIS SONG! As you know, 'N Sync is one of my favorite groups and I am inspired by Gloria Estefan. I have always admired her, ever since she came back from her horrible bus accident and I remember crying when she finally came back at the Grammy's with her song "Coming Out of the Dark." This is a great song and even if I have to buy the whole soundtrack to just get this song, I'll do it. The only thing that makes my angry, is that you hardly get to see Lance, he's always caught walking behind someone or something! But when you do see him, he's really cute in the light blue sweater! Also, one other thing I noticed, in the first verse, when Justin sings "soul," try to tell me that wasn't digitally enhanced!

20. "Beautiful Stranger" By: Madonna
I kinda like this song and I loved the movie, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. However, I just want to say to Madonna, "Enough! You're 40! You're not a kid anymore, quit acting like one!" You'd think that she wouldn't want her child seeing her dancing like that and rubbing her butt on Mike Meyers' head! I do have to admit that she's better now than in her "Like A Virgin" days, but still...

19. "Why Don't You Get A Job" By: The Offspring
"My friend's got a girlfriend and he hates that bitch, he tells me everyday..." There was this kid in my Web Page Programming class last semester that always used to sing that at the beginning of class! = ) So, I guess this song just reminds me of that and I like the calypso drum in it.

18. "Freak On A Leash" By: KoRn
I am not a KoRn fan, however, I know all the words to this song, because my brother loves KoRn. I like the animation and how the bullet travels through so many things in this video, but Jonathan Davis' babbling and screaming is annoying beyond belief.

17. "All Star" By: Smash Mouth
I love this song and it reminds my of my friend, Carson, but I still have yet to buy the CD. I guess because, my friend, Sarah, told me it wasn't that good. I always like the Smash Mouth videos, because they are so colorful and fun.

16. "Give It To You" By: Jordan Knight
Ah, another one of my favorite Jordan Knight songs. I love watching the dancing in this song, and it reminds me of my friend, Jimmy, who can dance like that. I admit that the lyrics are kinda disturbing, but oh well, Jordan looks really cute in that tan sweater. The only part I don't like, is that the girl has to get rid of her glasses before Jordan notices her. Like glasses automatically make her "uncool". I do like how he tried to re-create the Grease! finale in the 90's though.

15. "Genie In A Bottle" By: Christina Aguilera
Ooh, I love this song! It's a great song to sing-a-long to and a fun video. I like Christina, she seems generally nicer than Britney Spears and has a bit more talent, even if she didn't win Star Search. I thought it was really nice that Christina was so excited about Britney's album that she called into MTV to support her friend. So, how come we haven't seen Britney calling in for Christina? But there's just one part I don't get...what's with the blue beaded top and orange pants?

14. "Wild Wild West" By: Will Smith featuring Dru Hill and Kool Mo Dee
To tell you the truth, I had forgotten about this song, and so was surprised to see it so high up on the countdown. I guess it was pretty popular at the beginning of the summer. It's a cool song with neat dancing. I like the cameo by Alfonso Ribero (Calton from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air), but I can't stand Salma Hayek in this video! "You're sweaty, let me get you a towel...I hate spiders!" ARGH!

13. "Stitches" By: Orgy
I like this song a lot, I just wish I could understand all the words. I like the concept of the video and I always find myself looking at the panel of words to see the description of things in the video. The cutest part is the "Youthful Image" where they show the teddy bear wearing the "Orgy" t-shirt. The only part that's funny, is the white background makes it look like a techno GAP commercial.

12. "I Love You Came Too Late" By: Joey McIntyre
I'm not a Joey McIntyre fan, but I do like this song, but not the video. First of all, Joey needs to shave. Second, he's not in STOMP! And I thought it was funny that Carson was pointing out how he was trying to do STOMP!, but it made me angry that Joey got angry, like Carson was trying to make fun of him (and he probably was). I just think that Joey's got an attitude...

11. "If You Had My Love" By: Jennifer Lopez
I like Jennifer Lopez, as an actress and a singer. I loved her performance in Selena and I like this video. I think it's cool how she has her performance like a web site broadcast and how the little girl is imitating her dance moves. Another thing I noticed is that Jennifer also says "bay-bee," like Britney Spears.

10. "Guilty Conscience" By: Eminem featuring Dr. Dre
I don't really like Eminem, but this video is interesting. I think the "freezing" part is cool. However, I just want to help that lady pick up her groceries after that kid walks into her, then just leaves her there to pick them all up herself.

9. "What's My Age Again?" By: Blink 182
I like Blink 182. In fact, it surprised my friend, Pat, that I like their style of music. It just goes to show you my wide taste in music. Anyways, I like this video a lot...I think it was a really cool concept and I like how they run through different TV shows.

8. "No Scrubs" By: TLC
This is an ok video...I just don't get the point of the outfits and those flashing red dots place in *ahem* certain areas...or T-Boz's bright red hair, maybe that's where Joey got the red hair idea from!?

7. "I Do (Cherish You)" By: 98°
When I first bought 98° And Rising, I didn't like this song and it was one I always skipped. But then after I watched "Making The Video," the song really grew on me. I like the video, but I wonder, what kind of girl is this that goes out with 5 (maybe more) different guys and they all propose to her and she doesn't feel guilty at all!? If I were 98°, I would be glad I didn't marry her!

6. "Livin' La Vida Loca" By: Ricky Martin
I think this song distinguishes the summer of '99. I'm not a big fan of the song, but the video is fun. I just don't get why the girl is all naked, but Ricky doesn't even lose his shirt?

5. "Sometimes" By: Britney Spears
This is definitely a "fun, summer video" as Britney herself said. I like it and the guy is cute, but Britney, get a shirt to cover yourself! I also thought it was hilarious that someone noticed that girl scratching herself in the video, before it got retired from TRL. It's funny that no one caught that in the editing! They were probably just paying too much attention to Britney to notice it.

4. "Bawitdaba" By: Kid Rock
This is a cool video and the girl riding with Kid Rock, reminds me of Kristi Yamaguchi. Anyways, I just remember this song, because my friend, Richard, and I used to talk about it in History last year.

3. "I Drive Myself Crazy" By: 'N Sync
Well...it's 'N Sync, so of course I love it. The concept was clever and unique. I just think it's weird that the girl gets angry at Lance, because he picked the wrong petal on the flower, like it would really mean he didn't love her! JC and Justin do a good job of being crazy, but what asylum gives their patients silk pajamas and fuzzy slippers?

2. "Nookie" By: Limp Bizkit
"I did it all for the nookie, c'mon, the nookie, c'mon, so you can take that cookie, and stick it up your, yeah..." Ah, the sweet sound of Fred Durst and the Bizkit. I have to admit that I was happy when LB beat out 'N Sync and BSB for the #1 spot! It was funny to see all those 12-year-old girls so upset that their precious boybands were defeated. I was glad, because then LB finally got some of their well deserved credit.

1. "I Want It That Way" By: Backstreet Boys
I knew this song would be #1! I mean, come on...the first new song from the Backstreet Boys in several years! I love this video and I can never get enough of watching it, especially of watching Nick. I also did karaoke to this song with Jimmy at our Back To School Bash on August 27th. It was so much fun, even if the song doesn't make much sense...

I like their sound, so if you have a few extra bucks, I would suggest investing in Len, before their CD gets into that $12+ range.

^^Honestly better than 90% of music writing

Why did "Stitches" beat "Blue Monday?"

billstevejim, Tuesday, 27 August 2019 02:12 (four years ago) link

"blue monday" was probably at its trl-peak earlier than the beginning of whatever summer-centered survey period they used to compile the countdown? i don't think "stitches" would have been the overall bigger video

i actually love "she's all i ever had" (esp the harmonies on the sustained note leading into the chorus), tho its video is kinda cheesy/eh

"crazy" was kinda great and the video was pretty fun (and yes it was def the stop remix!). i semi-love all the singles from britney's debut, honestly, save "from the bottom of my broken heart"

dyl, Tuesday, 27 August 2019 05:19 (four years ago) link

this poll is impossible. i voted for "if you had my love"... would prob put "anywhere" second. can't think beyond that.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 27 August 2019 05:26 (four years ago) link

Kinda crazy that the US went with “From The Bottom...” as the fourth single instead of “Born to Make You Happy” like the rest of the world did. Now there’s a song...

billstevejim, Wednesday, 28 August 2019 01:18 (four years ago) link

The Pandora radio station they piped into my last retail job had a habit of playing “More More More” 5 times a shift so I could definitely go without hearing that loop ever again.

Vape Store (crüt), Wednesday, 28 August 2019 02:01 (four years ago) link

that loop is barely present in "more more more" tho -- looping those 2 bars is what made the sample so brilliant!

(i love "more more more" but i have never been exposed to it that often)

I remember being puzzled by that whole episode. Jordan Knight re-emerges after the guts of a decade in the wilderness with this really catchy little pop song, and then . . . nothing. He just disappeared as suddenly as he'd arrived.

Pauline Male (Eric H.), Thursday, 29 August 2019 12:52 (four years ago) link

What is it about 'All Star' that seems to divorce it from its point of origin? I can never remember when it was released, and I'm always surprised when I see it lumped in with other songs from the same era. Like it doesn't seem right for some reason. It could've been released in '99, 1962, last year, four hundred years ago. All of those options seem like they could be correct. I know there was a time in my life before 'All Star' existed but my sense of how long that span was is pretty nebulous. Perhaps it was always there, never drawing attention to itself but lingering and waiting for the proper moment to appear in all its finery. I've always known the words. I was born knowing the words, they were the first to escape my lips after drawing my first lungful of air. Always have I known that shooting stars, and ONLY shooting stars, can break the moh-ooo-old.
