Boston Red Sox ace Chris Sale does not need Tommy John surgery, sources tell ESPN. A follow-up today with Dr. James Andrews confirmed the diagnosis of elbow inflammation. His return date is unclear, but for Boston, this is excellent news.

Jose Ramirez's regular season is over. Cleveland's hard-hitting third baseman is expected to need five to seven weeks to recover after undergoing hand surgery Monday in New York.

Yelich ;_;

man, that sucks

Christian Yelich left tonight’s game with a fractured right knee cap. He will miss the remainder of the season.

That's lousy, right in the middle of a wild-card/MVP race.

clemenza, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 03:04 (four years ago) link

fuck

omar little, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 03:22 (four years ago) link

yeah this sucks for a lot of reasons, not only was he likely to repeat as MVP but he also had a good shot at being the first 50/30 player in MLB history, he was 6 HRs away which he was on pace to get. funny enough I don't think this affects the Brewers playoff odds a whole lot, for one they're still sort of a longshot (FG has them at 20%), for two they're actually pretty deep in the outfield. so it'll cost 'em like half a projected win over the remaining 20. obviously that's still huge but the whole "pack it in" thing I'm seeing all over Twitter strikes me as a little dramatic.

frogbs, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 04:14 (four years ago) link

Dramatic indeed. What would you gain by ‘packing it in’ at this point of the season?

Van Horn Street, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 17:24 (four years ago) link

they're only a game behind the cubs for the second wild card and the cubs have been playing pretty shitty lately

na (NA), Wednesday, 11 September 2019 17:45 (four years ago) link

We'll never know, but I suspect Bellinger was going to win MVP anyway. Rendon is making a very strong push the past month, though.

clemenza, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 17:53 (four years ago) link

I dunno, I think yelich might have won it over Bellinger - he was leading him in slg, obp, average, tied in home runs, up 7.7 to 7.2 in fWAR.

Of course, Yelich would have to count on the rest of his team doing a little better so they could make the playoffs, which would then make him more “valuable” in the minds of some voters. Bellinger, on the other hand, plays for one of the best teams in baseball, a team that would still make the playoffs even if they didn’t have him, which makes him more “valuable” in the minds of these same voters. (??)

But yeah, yelich is out of it now.

I am also Harl (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 11 September 2019 17:57 (four years ago) link

Yelich had been scuffling a bit lately, though Bellinger wasn't exactly running away with it and creating distance between the two. Bellinger will probably get it but Rendon is certainly building a small "narrative".

omar little, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 17:58 (four years ago) link

We’ll see how the rest of the Nats perform down the stretch. Will be crucial in determining how valuable Rendon has been

I am also Harl (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 11 September 2019 17:59 (four years ago) link

Yeli was very much 'back' the last week or so. I don't think he really scuffled for any prolonged stretch.

there's still a decent chance he ends the season with the most fWAR but even so, voters don't really like giving it to the same guy twice in a row anyway so yeah he's probably out

frogbs, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 19:25 (four years ago) link

i think more than that even, has it ever gone to a player who's missed a sustained stretch of time to close out the season? it's not a fair rationale but i think for voters they like to see a guy who's been in action recently.

omar little, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 19:39 (four years ago) link

Yelich would maybe inarguably still deserve it at the end of the year regardless.

omar little, Wednesday, 11 September 2019 19:39 (four years ago) link

depending on how the other two reasonable contenders finish out

Johan Camargo to IL with a shinbone fracture.

Trout's been out a week with a foot neuroma and there's talk of him not returning for ROS.

Good night sweet prince

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Sunday, 15 September 2019 19:11 (four years ago) link

This guy has the worst luck. Can't see that it will cost him the MVP, though--the only guy even close, Bregman, will split votes with two or three other Astros.

clemenza, Sunday, 15 September 2019 19:18 (four years ago) link

Or more to the point, Trout was about to win unanimously, and two weeks will have a minimal impact on that.

clemenza, Sunday, 15 September 2019 19:30 (four years ago) link

anthony rizzo out for probably duration of regular season with an ankle sprain

na (NA), Monday, 16 September 2019 21:40 (four years ago) link

No surprise that Charlie Culberson (multiple facial fractures, no surgery needed) is done for the year.

WmC, Monday, 16 September 2019 22:43 (four years ago) link

Lucas Gioloto out for RoS with lat strain.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 17 September 2019 04:22 (four years ago) link

Freddie Freeman's been limping along with a floater in his right elbow, but he came out of the game today and suddenly it's apparent he hasn't been very good this month. (Last homer 9/1) Maybe he'll consent to resting until the NLDS.

WmC, Sunday, 22 September 2019 20:23 (four years ago) link

three months pass...

So the Cespedis injury that caused his contract to be renegotiated was caused by a fall while tussling with a wild boar?!
