i think to troll one must be on at least some level intending to troll, so i disagree nv
― phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:33 (four years ago) link
we shall, possibly, have to lurk under that bridge when we come to it
For there to be trolling, intent is paramount. Except, of course, the most successful specimens rely on the trollee's structural inability to reliably decipher the troll's exact intentions. In other words, the best trolling may or may not be an instance of trolling at all.
Apologies for restating the obvious.

Feel like an essential component of trolling is the ethos that self-amusement/-satisfaction > comity.
― Come and Rock Me, Hot Potatoes (Old Lunch), Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:34 (four years ago) link
eh yes and no
the intent is from the pov of the troll and therefore, while it can be unknown from outside, it can never have an actual value of unknown

was socrates a troll? what if yr asking a disingenuous question meant to provoke someone's assumption bc you believe there's value to be extracted from the conflict even if you don't necessarily 100% believe yr method of provocation inherently (asking questions etc)

but the person intent upon behaving as if each new item in the world that does not please then were a troll, the trollée-näif if you will, what are we to make of this particular subtroll?

― HOOS on first (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:37 (four years ago) link
like if that's trolling then trolling is an excellent thing we need more of but if trolling is more like disingenuously pissing ppl off for your own amusement and with no intellectual goal or intent then i agree it's v bad + a waste of time u kno
― Mordy, Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:37 (four years ago) link
It is that really inasmuch as there's a platonic form of the troll
― HOOS on first (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:39 (four years ago) link
Trolling can be undertaken for purposes of self-amusement and pedagogy, i.e. one can troll for the sake of a purportedly greater cause. It is not inherently nihilistic.

Is this trolling?
Diogenes received an invitation to dine with one whose house was splendidly furnished, in the highest order and taste, and nothing therein wanting. Diogenes, hawking, and as if about to spit, looked in all directions, and finding nothing adapted thereto, spat right in the face of the master. He, indignant, asked why he did so? "Because," Diogenes, "I saw nothing so dirty and filthy in all your house. For the walls were covered with pictures, the floors of the most precious tessellated character — and ranged with the various images of gods, and other ornamental figures."

What about this?
When [Diogenes of Sinope] was sold as a slave, he endured it most nobly. For on a voyage to Aegina he was captured by pirates under the command of Scirpalus, conveyed to Crete and exposed for sale. When the auctioneer asked in what he was proficient, he replied, "In ruling men." Thereupon he pointed to a certain Corinthian with a fine purple border to his robe, the man named Xeniades above-mentioned, and said, “Sell me to this man; he needs a master.”

That neither our Thoughts, nor Passions, nor Ideas formed by the Imagination, exist without the Mind, is what every Body will allow. And it seems no less evident that the various Sensations or Ideas imprinted on the Sense, however blended or combined together (that is, whatever Objects they compose) cannot exist otherwise than in a Mind perceiving them. I think an intuitive Knowledge may be obtained of this, by any one that shall attend to what is meant by the Term Exist when applied to sensible Things. The Table I write on, I say, exists, that is, I see and feel it; and if I were out of my Study I should say it existed, meaning thereby that if I was in my Study I might perceive it, or that some other Spirit actually does perceive it. There was an Odor, that is, it was smelled; There was a Sound, that is to say, it was heard; a Colour or Figure, and it was perceived by Sight or Touch. This is all that I can understand by these and the like Expressions. For as to what is said of the absolute Existence of unthinking Things without any relation to their being perceived, that seems perfectly unintelligible. Their Esse is Percipi, nor is it possible they should have any Existence, out of the Minds or thinking Things which perceive them.
