using the phrase "by NY Times best-selling author L. Ron Hubbard" on a flier for a seminar held at the actual CoS Celebrity Center is some amazing "we're reeling in people who know as little as possible" work

going to drop it now, but this is good sc1entology thread material and I don't want to sully the VM thread

untuned mass damper (mh), Tuesday, 13 August 2019 15:58 (four years ago) link

ha, I almost brought up the scientology thing but I didn't want to make a mean joke because I haven't finished the final two episodes yet and saw the spoilers above.

two weeks pass...

yeah Hulu is only available through Crave in Canada so you have to pay for two services to get at it, which fuck that tbh

Wait, I only had to pay for Crave to watch it. I binged it over the last two days since I had a cold. Ending = holy shit. It was addictive and good drama/suspense. I do appreciate how they've adapted the show to everyone being 15 years older. Not sure if it was good mystery.

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Thursday, 29 August 2019 04:06 (four years ago) link

yeah the mystery was kinda “Agatha Christie starter kit”

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 29 August 2019 04:18 (four years ago) link

tbh the mysteries on the show have never been all that great/distinctive. they're more just skeletons to hang the characters, relationships, perilous ethical/moral landscape and mood on.

Simon H., Thursday, 29 August 2019 04:23 (four years ago) link

s1 had the best one and it was pretty much just Twin Peaks redux

Simon H., Thursday, 29 August 2019 04:24 (four years ago) link

Hm, well, Twin Peaks reimagined as a naturalistic traditional mystery story is p much what I want from TV. Even with that one, though, iirc, the answer was m/l just revealed via the deux ex machina of the videotapes in the last episode? I feel like there were some solid mysteries of the week, which they've done away with altogether, although I'd have to rewatch to recall what they were.

Rewatching s1 does seem like a good use of the month of Crave I've signed up for.

Speaking of Peaks-a-like shows: I found the first season of Northern Exposure for 25p a couple of days ago. That was compared to TP a lot, wasn’t it? I don’t think I ever watched it.

compared?? related 'quirky' northwest settings maybe but

j., Friday, 30 August 2019 20:24 (four years ago) link

lol yeah that is not a good comparison at all

VM is more bad-ass PI (meaning a cop without a police structure) than sherlock-style clue detection for sure

rob, Friday, 30 August 2019 20:29 (four years ago) link

Veronica's deep, deep damage really coming to the forefront in this season made for fascinating viewing, I thought, great writing and great exploration of the character from Kristen Bell.

president of deluded fruitcakes anonymous (silby), Friday, 30 August 2019 20:32 (four years ago) link

Yep, and it helped them to sidestep the most obvious/familiar potential sources of drama btwn Veronica and Logan (ie infidelity, Logan being a fuckup, etc)

Simon H., Friday, 30 August 2019 20:34 (four years ago) link

I don't see how they can do veronica dirtier than they did this season but if they make another I'm sure they'll figure out a way b/c the genre probably demands that she won't get a break

I'm not the only one! https://www.rollingstone.com/tv/tv-lists/20-tv-shows-most-influenced-by-twin-peaks-126797/northern-exposure-114701/ I'm just dimly remembering marketing from nearly 30 years ago...

yeah maybe her and Dick will hit the road and compare "my life is a series of horrors" stories

rob, Friday, 30 August 2019 20:46 (four years ago) link

xp well, marketers are shameless

j., Friday, 30 August 2019 20:47 (four years ago) link

it's like Sherlock Holmes, there's no need to show Veronica progressing (the death knell of many awesome genre shows)... she can just be a deeply damaged badass over and over again

I super hope they don't bring back Piz or dunkindonut next season.

Yerac, Friday, 30 August 2019 23:18 (four years ago) link

Northern Exposure intermittently had a supernatural weirdness that could be Twin Peaks-y I guess.

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 30 August 2019 23:58 (four years ago) link

It started in 1990 - twin peaks was perhaps an obvious touchstone (though I guess I’ll have to watch it to find out if it was the writers or the critics doing the touching)

Ha, reviewing the first two eps, I had forgotten how much the show emphasized beatdowns as a model for adolescent conflict resolution.

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Saturday, 31 August 2019 20:22 (four years ago) link

halfway through this new season and I'm loving it - it's aged exactly as it should, perfectly in sync with its audience.
One small thing though, has Weevil always looked like a pre-teen dressed up as 90's gangsta for Halloween? Or did they make it worse by trying to age the character?

one month passes...

I'm avoiding the recent part of this thread because I haven't been able to see this yet- but could some kind person have a look at this DVD on Amazon and see if it looks like s4 from the description etc? It's labelled season 1 but released 22 October 2019. Thanks!

thank you!
Weird that it's "The Complete First Season"

don't buy things from amazon

The cover looks like Veronica Mars combined with Leatherface

Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Friday, 25 October 2019 15:49 (four years ago) link

well this was a ball!
I really enjoyed watching it but also had this weird feeling of unease a lot of the time. Maybe it was Logan's 'keeping in the anger' or maybe it was all the adult dialogue which sat oddly at first (I can't remember if the movie was like that), or maybe I couldn't quite get a feel for some of the characters? idk.

two months pass...

Forgive the thread spam, but I wanted to note that this show's 2019 season is nominated in the 2019 ILX TV poll:

ILX's Best Television of 2019 Poll / VOTING AND CAMPAIGNING THREAD / Voting Ends January 31

If you like this show and you'd like to see it have a good showing in the poll (running in February) all you need to do is submit a ballot including it and your other favorites (4 minimum, 25 maximum, organized by your favorite to least favorite) to forksclovetofu at gmail by end of day today. It'll take five minutes; get to it!

trying to do a rewatch and made it through s2 fine but s3 really feels like work. I hate Piz !

I figure after Piz’s Pitchfork internship fell through he probably became a bitter ilxor

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Sunday, 13 September 2020 14:19 (three years ago) link

piz is too ridiculous a creation for me to hate

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Sunday, 13 September 2020 15:15 (three years ago) link

or maybe not ridiculous in and of himself so much as i think it's ridiculous that someone wrote him and put him in a show

the kiss scene between piz and veronica is all time, despite his shortcomings

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Sunday, 13 September 2020 15:19 (three years ago) link

Piz is named after one of the show’s directors iirc.

found myself unexpectedly rooting for Piz in the VM movie though! He was nice and clean and cute there compared to the still volatile Logan.

Roz, Sunday, 13 September 2020 15:50 (three years ago) link

I barely remember Piz tbh. Was s3 the one with the Stanford Prison Experiment storyline?

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Sunday, 13 September 2020 15:53 (three years ago) link

Yep lol. Season 3 was a chore tbf, way too many subplots and new characters no one cared about.

Roz, Sunday, 13 September 2020 15:57 (three years ago) link

i remember preferring the third season to the second

i think 1 >>>> 4 > 3 > 2

i mean, er, glow

Chuck_Tatum, Sunday, 13 September 2020 16:14 (three years ago) link

iirc 2 mainly suffers from the long format season, so much filler and the stakes just go up and up and up until it's even more ridiculous than usual

all relationships on this show dwarfed completely by veronica and keith's. although i am fond of veronica/wallace early seasons friendship.

“They would all be eight-episode mysteries,” Thomas said about his vision for future seasons. “For Season 5 the ideas I have been noodling with have all been kind of Agatha Christie in that Murder In the Manor House sort of idea.

In my head this became Knives Out

dan selzer, Sunday, 13 September 2020 16:38 (three years ago) link

Logan is so f-ing tortured and hot in the movie. You can't blame her for throwing over bland NY guy even while your higher brain is going "NNNNOOOOOOO!" as she caroms right off a cliff.

There's more Italy than necessary. (in orbit), Sunday, 13 September 2020 16:43 (three years ago) link
