Blondi (1941 – 29 April 1945)[a][2] was Adolf Hitler's German Shepherd, a gift as a puppy[3][4] from Martin Bormann in 1941. Blondi stayed with Hitler even after his move into the Führerbunker located underneath the garden of the Reich Chancellery on 16 January 1945.[5]

Hitler was very fond of Blondi, keeping her by his side and allowing her to sleep in his bed in the bunker. According to Hitler's secretary Traudl Junge, this affection was not shared by Eva Braun, Hitler's companion, who preferred her two Scottish Terrier dogs named Negus and Stasi.

Blondi played a role in Nazi propaganda by portraying Hitler as an animal lover. Dogs like Blondi were coveted as "germanische Urhunde", being close to the wolf, and became very fashionable during the Nazi era.[6] On 29 April 1945, Hitler expressed doubts about the cyanide capsules he had received through Heinrich Himmler's SS.[7] To verify the capsules' potency, Hitler ordered Dr. Werner Haase to test one on Blondi, who died as a result.[8]

Blondi's puppies
In March[9][10] or in early April[11][12] (likely 4 April)[13] 1945, she had a litter of five puppies with Gerdy Troost's German Shepherd, Harras. Hitler named one of the puppies "Wulf", his favorite nickname and the meaning of his own first name, Adolf ("noble wolf"),[14] and he began to train her.[15] One of Blondi's puppies was reserved for Eva Braun's sister Gretl. Eva sent Gretl a letter containing a photo of Blondi and three of her puppies, Gretl's being indicated with an arrow.[16]

Other dogs
During his military service in World War I, Hitler rescued a stray white Fox Terrier named "Fuchsl". Hitler had great affection for the dog, and, when he was not on duty at the front, he would spend much of his free time playing with the dog in the barracks. Hitler was profoundly distraught when he lost him.[17][18]

He had been given a German Shepherd before named "Prinz" in 1921, during his years of poverty, but he had been forced to lodge the dog elsewhere. However, she managed to escape and return to him. Hitler, who adored the loyalty and obedience of the dog, thereafter developed a great liking for the breed.[19]

He also owned a German Shepherd called "Muckl".[20] Before Blondi, Hitler had two German Shepherd dogs, a mother [born 1926] and daughter [born ca. 1930] – both named Blonda. In some photos taken during the 1930s the younger Blonda is incorrectly labeled as Blondi[13] (in most cases photograph descriptions were written later).

In May 1942, Hitler bought another young German Shepherd "from a minor official in the post office in Ingolstadt"[21] to keep Blondi company. He called her Bella.[22] According to Traudl Junge, Eva Braun was very fond of her two Scottish Terrier dogs named Negus and Stasi. She usually kept them away from Blondi.[23]

Death of Blondi and other dogs
During the course of 29 April 1945, Hitler learned of the death of his ally Benito Mussolini at the hands of Italian partisans. This, along with the fact the Soviet Red Army was closing in on his location, strengthened Hitler in his resolve not to allow himself or his wife to be captured. That afternoon, Hitler expressed doubts about the cyanide capsules he had received through Heinrich Himmler's SS.[24] By this point, Hitler regarded Himmler as a traitor. To verify the capsules' contents, Hitler—who already intended to have Blondi killed so that she did not fall into the hands of the Russians[25]—ordered Dr. Werner Haase to test one on Blondi, and the dog died as a result.[26] Hitler became completely inconsolable.[27]

According to a report commissioned by Joseph Stalin and based on eyewitness accounts, Hitler's dog-handler Feldwebel Fritz Tornow took Blondi's pups and shot them in the garden of the bunker complex on 30 April, after Hitler and Eva Braun committed suicide. He also killed Eva Braun's two dogs, Frau Gerda Christian's dogs, and his own dachshund. Tornow was later captured by the Allies.[28] Hitler's nurse, Erna Flegel, said in 2005 that Blondi's death had affected the people in the bunker more than Eva Braun's suicide.[29] After the battle in Berlin ended, the remains of Hitler, Braun, and two dogs (thought to be Blondi and her offspring Wulf) were discovered in a shell crater by a unit of SMERSH, the Soviet counter-intelligence agency.[30][31] The dog thought to be Blondi was exhumed and photographed by the Soviets.[32]

Goebbels' Diary, 30 May 1942: " He [Hitler] has bought himself a young German Shepherd dog called "Blondi" which is the apple of his eye. It was touching listening to him say that he enjoyed walking with this dog so much, because only with it could he be sure that [his companion] would not start talking about the war or politics. One notices time and time again that the Führer is slowly but surely becoming lonely. It is very touching to see him play with this young German Shepherd dog. The animal has grown so accustomed to him that it will hardly take a step without him. It is very nice to watch the Führer with his dog. At the moment the dog is the only living thing that is constantly with him. At night it sleeps at the foot of his bed, it is allowed into his sleeping compartment in the special train and enjoys a number of privileges...that no human would ever dare to claim. He bought the dog from a minor official in the post office in Ingolstadt."

dmac, it's trolling because Mark G and marcos are saying how they hate film threads because people always say bad things about films they like, then sarahell calls the single example they give a "piece of shit" with no further comment. It's funny and it's a bit mean and you cannot tell if it's serious or not, this is what trolling is like, obv explaining it to death does not make it more funny, but anyway

I actually think burrito generation might be a new troll

nope not a troll! I've been an off-and-on ilxr since around 9/11. was del griffith before I impulsively decided to ditch that handle a few months ago. I liked Karl's paint sale fundraiser idea, and I do like me a good donation match opportunity, and I did like the paintings too, but I've got enough of those at home already so I thought I'd see if I could use my donation for something a little more unique/creative/provocative. it's not because the handle Karl Malone offends me personally, but it does have a vaguely questionable ironic lol flavor to it especially in a social justice context you've gotta agree! more the sort of thing you'd expect of a 4channer or a boogaloo boi. and no I'm not certain how the dynamic would change if you were black or I was black, cause we're not.

anyway, $100 was sent with the intent you'll match it and send it on to your chosen bail fund.

pomenitul, Sunday, 29 November 2020 23:28 (three years ago) link

three weeks pass...

Loose definition there: "saying a thing that stands up to no logic scrutiny or could even be a sincere belief beyond the desire to get a rise out of people you don't like"

― uptown top tanking (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:12 (one year ago) bookmarkflaglink

ok we have baseline

ty for yr service nv

― phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:14 (one year ago) bookmarkflaglink

I mean I don't hold with hard definitions in general but baseline, yeah, that's something like a baseline

― uptown top tanking (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:15 (one year ago) bookmarkflaglink

Next level of complexity is that the sincerity of the troll's statements should always be on some level plausible, like it's just possible a Swinson is so tied into her bubble that she cannot see the logical dishonesty there

― uptown top tanking (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:17 (one year ago) bookmarkflaglink

gonna have to unpick that one maybe

― phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:20 (one year ago) bookmarkflaglink

Maybe not the thread to go deep into that specific example but roughly "I cannot support this candidate with a number of obvious qualifications for temporary leader of the government but hey I had a word with a couple of absolutely unqualified chums and wouldn't they be much better choices?"

― HOOS on first (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:23 (one year ago) bookmarkflaglink

Now either she *knows* why they're ludicrous suggestions or she's so deep in her own game she can't see the ludicrousness. The outside observer's uncertainty is a very troll-like situation

― HOOS on first (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:25 (one year ago) bookmarkflaglink

Schrödinger stuff, from outside yes

but does it rely on whether or not *she* is aware of the ludicrous uncertainty in order to be trolling (as i type it out it seems obvious that it does)

― phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:27 (one year ago) bookmarkflaglink

"a thing that stands up to no logic scrutiny or could even be a sincere belief beyond the desire to get a rise out of people" depends a lot on the individual oftentimes u have two ppl who both think the other person is trolling bc neither are capable of imagining a different perspective

― Mordy, Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:28 (one year ago) bookmarkflaglink

I don't think it does because death of the author and as Burroughs might've described it the troll inside

― HOOS on first (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:29 (one year ago) bookmarkflaglink

Intentionality is not being taken into account this season, it's about whether the hand or arm are in an "unnatural" position IIRC.

― Tim, Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:29 (one year ago) bookmarkflaglink

xp

yeah sure Mordy but to the extent I'm engaging with this in good faith it is very much about perspective, social context, history and the speakers' knowledge of one another, like all language really

― HOOS on first (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:31 (one year ago) bookmarkflaglink

you will ofc be aware that in such a designation the other variable is the observer's capacity for befuddlement

allow me to further muddy water by suggesting an advance troll technique:

the observer so puzzled by whether or not something is a troll or not that any third party onlooker (and indeed the original subject, the suspected troll themselves) might wonder whether or not the perplexed-possible-trollée is not infact a faux-trolled-troll

fuckit mordy got in there

― phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:32 (one year ago) bookmarkflaglink

lol tim

― phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:32 (one year ago) bookmarkflaglink

i think to troll one must be on at least some level intending to troll, so i disagree nv

― phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:33 (one year ago) bookmarkflaglink

we shall, possibly, have to lurk under that bridge when we come to it

― phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:33 (one year ago) bookmarkflaglink

For there to be trolling, intent is paramount. Except, of course, the most successful specimens rely on the trollee's structural inability to reliably decipher the troll's exact intentions. In other words, the best trolling may or may not be an instance of trolling at all.

Apologies for restating the obvious.

xps

Feel like an essential component of trolling is the ethos that self-amusement/-satisfaction > comity.

― Come and Rock Me, Hot Potatoes (Old Lunch), Thursday, 15 August 2019 14:34 (one year ago) bookmarkflaglink

eh yes and no

the intent is from the pov of the troll and therefore, while it can be unknown from outside, it can never have an actual value of unknown

(i feel the same way)

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 23 December 2020 20:24 (three years ago) link

I feel comfortable stating that nobody, when first confronted with the phrase "that's where I'm a Viking", has ever sincerely believed that "to be a Viking" is an extant phrase implying excellence

NV, I can see that you have a good deal of insight into the workings of other people's brains, it's a field in which you excel, in fact.

٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 23 December 2020 20:35 (three years ago) link

what about sentences such as "when it comes to raiding and looting Irish monasteries, that's where I'm a Viking!"

brimstead, Tuesday, 2 March 2021 23:56 (three years ago) link

I wouldn't trust a dude enough to announce that I was going to do "random daily phone checks" ... that's like announcing DUI checkpoints, if they're smart enough they'll go around them, and if they're stupid enough not to know, then they're not someone I'd want to be with romantically

sarahell, Wednesday, 3 March 2021 02:21 (three years ago) link

best response

I went thru an SO's phone once, but only bc I suspected he was cheating. I was right and my sister, who was house-sitting for us while we were traveling to a wedding, almost trashed his house to avenge me, but I told her not to. We broke up about a yr later but are still friends
