Carcass CD Poll

american bradass (BradNelson), Sunday, 11 August 2019 23:46 (four years ago) link

but now we got surgical steel in the mix!

american bradass (BradNelson), Sunday, 11 August 2019 23:46 (four years ago) link

It's likely they'll have a new one soon, so look forward to the rerun next year!

chap, Monday, 12 August 2019 00:10 (four years ago) link

just having a quick Surgical Steel re-listen and can confirm that The Granulating Dark Satanic Mills is fucking great, ace lyrics as well "a working class hero is something to bleed"!

Jeff Walker has to be one of the most legible screamers ever

Simon H., Monday, 12 August 2019 00:29 (four years ago) link

People complained about that. I remember being new to death/grind and seeking help from Usenet (lol) and being told "they were way better when you couldn't understand the lyrics" peppered with "POSER" and "SHEEP" and "FALSE METAL"

I could understand that if their lyrics were corny but they rule!!

Simon H., Monday, 12 August 2019 00:34 (four years ago) link

Supposedly they have been playing "Death Certificate" live lately. I might go nuts if they play it at Psycho Las Vegas

carcass seemed to shed an old fanbase and attract a new one with each album until swansong i guess. for me this is why they incontrovertibly rule

american bradass (BradNelson), Monday, 12 August 2019 02:31 (four years ago) link

I'll still never forget flying to Maryland to see them for the first time and hearing the opening bassline of "Ruptured in Purulence" and drunkenly freaking out

Also A+ Led Zeppelin-esque trolling putting the song "Reek of Putrefaction" on Symphonies

speaking of...

I don't know how long ago this happened, but Earache took Carcass's back catalog off of just about every streaming service, including Spotify, ITunes, Deezer (lol), and Amazon Prime Music. The latter, they took even the ability to legally purchase it away, and as far as I can find, it's not available to purchase digitally anywhere online.

Well, I bought these CDs multiple times over, but two moves, a busted sound system, and a desire to move digital later, I have no idea where they are. So I hopped over to Youtube. Nope, Earache has blocked pretty much all of those albums from there.

Literally having to listen to anything pre-Heartwork (as I legally bought that on Amazon pre-pulldown) on this shitty blog that is hosting them. Like ok I get cutting down on pirating but to not even make a legal digital version available for purchase? I ain't buying the cds a third time.

I have had a conversation about this with Earache's US label manager. I can't say much but I can say that Carcass's catalog will be going back up everywhere - they're working some shit out.

aha! glad to know that, thanks for sharing.

Necroticism, although I've yet to hear their entire catalogue.

I still like Surgical Steel

eleven months pass...

Reek is definitely a headphone listen. not cos it has audiophile properties, but i literally can't make the riffs out otherwise nowadays with my broken ears.

and there are good ones all over this shit. plus the vocals are next level sick.

popeye's arse (Neanderthal), Thursday, 13 August 2020 04:47 (three years ago) link

I think on some level the sound quality of Reek is a perfect artistic encapsulation of the band's vision. Listening to the indistinct smears of sound is like trying to stare into the gore-collage cover and figure out what it is you're seeing.

ringworm, Thursday, 13 August 2020 07:39 (three years ago) link

that's a great way of putting it. yeah it sounds horrible, but it's perfect

not that I don't also love the cleaner sound of Symphonies of Sickness and Necroticism etc (esp the former)

CP Radio Gorgeous (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 13 August 2020 12:41 (three years ago) link

No more updates on their new album yet, slated for release this month but supposedly delayed by Covid (though plenty of other acts are getting records out fine).

chap, Thursday, 13 August 2020 13:06 (three years ago) link

I'm sure it's in the can, some labels are just more skittish about this shit than others.

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Thursday, 13 August 2020 14:29 (three years ago) link

I guess metal might be more dependant on physical media than some genres.

both new songs v good, especially considering they're essentially b-sides.

Simon H., Friday, 18 September 2020 18:04 (three years ago) link

I think I prefer the production on these to Surgical Steel - thicker and sludgier, yet still somehow crisp.

chap, Friday, 18 September 2020 18:12 (three years ago) link

two years pass...

what is yr ranking when we factor in Torn Arteries, now that we've had plenty of time to absorb it?

I think mine is

Symphonies of Sickness
Necroticism
Reek
Heartwork
Surgical Steel
Torn Arteries

which looks bad because it looks like I'm saying "lmao all the old stuff is better", but all of these are A pluses in my eyes. I didn't listen Swansong as I still haven't heard it.

I preferred Torn to Surgical at first, have kinda shifted back as not all of the songs hit me the same on re-listen, though I still like it a lot.

Heartwork could also leapfrog any of the ones on top of it too on a given day of the week.
