effrey Epstein, the financier who hanged himself in a federal jail in Manhattan, was supposed to have been checked by guards every 30 minutes, but that procedure was not being followed the night before he was found, a law-enforcement official with knowledge of his detention said.

In addition, the jail had transferred his cellmate and allowed Mr. Epstein to be housed alone in a cell just two weeks after he had been taken off suicide watch, a decision that also violated the jail’s normal procedure, two officials said.

I really don’t get the impulse to pooh-pooh people for having conspiracy theories about this when the person in question here was being prosecuted for participating in A MASSIVE CONSPIRACY

Epstein may or may not have been whacked but how can you blame people for thinking he was?

If you want this downplayed because you think it will give ammunition to the right, well, whose fault is that? The Clintons willingly chose to associate (extensively) with this guy. A staggering amount of famous liberals did, even AFTER he had been charged the first time.

People believe in conspiracy theories about the wealthy and powerful being depraved monsters who can get away with anything because they are constantly being given good reason to believe it.

And if you dismiss their concerns about it, they’ll happily fall under the sway of something like Qanon

WINNER!

I just think people who say Epstein was murdered are talking out their asses and I feel it’s my duty to call them out on it if not shame them for it. What’s the big deal

Simon H., Sunday, 11 August 2019 16:10 (four years ago) link

frankly whether he killed himself or he was offed is not very interesting to me because if it's the latter it's not like that is going to get cracked and solved. I"m more interested in seeing where this investigation into Maxwell and his other employees goes.

Simon if you know some details I don’t that indicate he was murdered feel free to share them!

american bradass (BradNelson), Sunday, 11 August 2019 16:40 (four years ago) link

this I assume is the specific Miami Herald piece fb is thinking of

Facing a 53-page federal indictment, Epstein could have ended up in federal prison for the rest of his life.

But on the morning of the breakfast meeting, a deal was struck — an extraordinary plea agreement that would conceal the full extent of Epstein’s crimes and the number of people involved.

Not only would Epstein serve just 13 months in the county jail, but the deal — called a non-prosecution agreement — essentially shut down an ongoing FBI probe into whether there were more victims and other powerful people who took part in Epstein’s sex crimes, according to a Miami Herald examination of thousands of emails, court documents and FBI records.

The pact required Epstein to plead guilty to two prostitution charges in state court. Epstein and four of his accomplices named in the agreement received immunity from all federal criminal charges. But even more unusual, the deal included wording that granted immunity to “any potential co-conspirators’’ who were also involved in Epstein’s crimes. These accomplices or participants were not identified in the agreement, leaving it open to interpretation whether it possibly referred to other influential people who were having sex with underage girls at Epstein’s various homes or on his plane.

As part of the arrangement, Acosta agreed, despite a federal law to the contrary, that the deal would be kept from the victims. As a result, the non-prosecution agreement was sealed until after it was approved by the judge, thereby averting any chance that the girls — or anyone else — might show up in court and try to derail it.

tho tbh revisiting this piece now it seems like a "tip of the iceberg" type deal, no mention of Mossad, Donald Barr, his mysterious/possibly nonexistent "hedge fund" etc

Are there any theories abt why the all-powerful global bilderberg elite decided not to slip him one of the many discreet, barely-detectable drugs known to be used by spy agencies around the world which can induce heart attack & suffocation virtually indistinguishable from a 'natural' death? As opposed to a faked suicide by hanging, which would obviously involve strong ppl, violence, forcible restraint, cajoling the silence of who knows how many guards & inmates, etc?

Yes, really. It’s no secret that a lot of people get sucked into the right through conspiracy theories. And yes, most of these theories are patently absurd, but many of them are seductive because they have some sort of connection to reality, no matter how skewed. Look at how long conspiracy theorists have dined out on Cointelpro and MK Ultra (both historically real and destructive secret programs), for example. And fuck, we just learned a few years ago that the NSA spies on everybody. Why would you trust anyone who tells you there’s nothing to worry about?

So when something like the Epstein case comes along that involves so many nodes of real-world power, and the man at the center of it turns up dead...welp.

Epstein’s death is inherently charged by the very nature of the crimes he was accused of and the circles he operated in. It does not mean he was murdered but scoffing at people who think it’s a little fishy seems to me a misguided and frankly rather patronizing impulse.

Curious whether there are any binational compacts between the US and UK that would get UK law enforcement involved.

... are people who believe in conspiracy theories really this persecuted

american bradass (BradNelson), Sunday, 11 August 2019 18:25 (four years ago) link

President Keyes, if someone had "theorized" a conspiracy that involved child sex trafficking on a remote island involving a cabal of pols and captains of industry...would that person have lost your respect?

I don't get it...I mean conspiracies exist, people are convicted of conspiring all the time. Theories abt conspiracies range from the unfounded and absurd (pizzagate) to the likely (dark money, name your lobby).

A banket dismissal of "conspiracy theories" is meaningless.

(if I had to guess I'd say Epstein killed himself, but nobody itt has any idea, and teah, ppl have been offed in prison for much less)

Euripedes' Trousers (Tom D.), Sunday, 11 August 2019 18:38 (four years ago) link

conspiracies exist, people are convicted of conspiring all the time.

I agree that criminal conspiracies are fairly common, in that the only requirement for a conspiracy is that two people agree together to knowingly break a law and then act upon that agreement. But convictions for conspiracy are rare, if only because prosecutors hate to bring 'conspiracy' charges, as opposed to criminal charges based solely on actions taken, rather than considering the prior agreement to act as a separate charge, thus muddying their case and making it needlessly complex.
