you do good WDYLL and I'm fine propping up your vanity in lieu of my lack of courage

untuned mass damper (mh), Thursday, 8 August 2019 19:51 (four years ago) link

I am not doubting about demographics however it annoys me how easily that gets thrown around like it's easy to engage every demographic on what is just a fucking msgboard! Ilx isn't special.

but again I am not sure it has to do with ilx. That Morrison thread is from 2008 and has less than 100 posts..

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 8 August 2019 19:52 (four years ago) link

Time was when there was a completely new WDYLL thread every month and each one had a good 80 posts.

A is for (Aimless), Thursday, 8 August 2019 19:52 (four years ago) link

i have tried to figure out if ilx posters are even real people (rather than old posters who want a new voice) and failed more often than not -- even when asking point blank who someone is. this is hardly a place where one's personal details are foregrounded; that is part of ilx's appeal, being free of those markers and labels. but the mystery tends to homogenize rather than diversify for obvious reasons.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Thursday, 8 August 2019 19:53 (four years ago) link

darragh otm . find the whole "gosh aren't white people terrible thing" that a few white posters seem so committed to on ilx really gross. got to the point where i've started to think that not having to wring my hands about how bad racism is on a message board is one of the few benefits of not being white.

― oscar bravo, Thursday, 8 August 2019 18:57 (fifty-three minutes ago) link

yeah, white people need to talk about race less, great idea

― Karl Malone, Thursday, 8 August 2019 19:01 (forty-nine minutes ago) link

Maybe just talk about it in a less performative and facile way? But what do I know? I' m not white.

oscar bravo, Thursday, 8 August 2019 19:55 (four years ago) link

But hey I don't ever post about race myself so perhaps I shouldn't criticise.

oscar bravo, Thursday, 8 August 2019 19:57 (four years ago) link

Yeah I like the anonymity. It's a huge plus.

xyzzzz__, Thursday, 8 August 2019 19:57 (four years ago) link

I like it when people rapidly change their screen names, because I like engaging with ILX as a gestalt entity, and the presumption that it is a sum of identities instead of anonymous individuals defined by erasure of revealing traits... after a while, though, you can't help but recognize individual voices

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Thursday, 8 August 2019 19:59 (four years ago) link

Many XPs, but figured WDYLL threads got hamstrung by ilxor picture availability on FB, Insta, Twitter etc.

That’s not a disingenuous question

hey ll! a few reasons:

1) reasons mentioned already, i.e. ilx is a primarily white space, these days i feel more drawn to places where there are more people of color, i have a larger network of such folks than i used to
2) there are a lot of things i'd still post about here but frankly it is work to type them out! just hanging in this thread for example has taken up most of my day.
3) twitter is easier to get the instant gratification kind of thing that I used to come here for
4) talking music these days, i don't even know what i'd say? all i listen to is NTS radio and it's rare that i even look up a tracklist. i could post links to favorite NTS episodes but i already do that
5) i used to hang out on ILH a little in the past but the cleveland cavaliers lost lebron james and i lost interest

a few reasons i stay:
1) ilxors i love, there are a lot of smart and wonderful people here who teach me things. i also don't want to diminish the diversity we have on the board in other ways. i feel like queer and trans voices on ilx have been fairly prominent for a long time, even if some of those posters are no longer active
2) there are threads in which i know i can still drop in on and have a conversation w/ the same folks - outic mentioned the dub thread for example, any thread on dylan, bisexuality, grateful dead, house and techno, "what are you into right now," etc
3) compulsion and inertia?

phil neville jacket (darraghmac), Thursday, 8 August 2019 23:30 (four years ago) link

Let me hasten to point out that the ILX I joined in January 2005 was more hostile in a boys-in-a-messageboard way than now. I have no wish to return to those days.

taking the point about not wishing to return, was it *better*?

to narrow down to the theme of today's revive, had it at that stage a better mix of representation despite being an orrible pit of ell?

i think it probably was, i think it probably did.

This is very otm. Old-ilx used to have way more drama, too. I get feeling nostalgic about that from time to time, but would never say old ilx was *better*. The community grew out of it like growing out of puberty (sort of, most of us).

I think ilx has all the specific 'codes' of a group of friends that's been around for ages (though not all are, or have to be, friends). I think it can be very daunting to get a foot in the door and 'learn' ilx's mores - i genuinely enjoy seeing new users blend in but wouldn't recommend ilx to anyone tbf.

I'm sticking around because ilx has become a place full of lieux de mémoire for me. And footy threads with terrible puns for titles, that too.

That thread taught me everything I know about chooglin

maffew12, Friday, 9 August 2019 12:59 (four years ago) link

Lol, I think stuff like that is perfect and hilarious. A mix of conversational shorthand and codes, parsing personalities, taking the piss and talking through things. I love ilxor. A mix of disparate voices and smart people who manifest both attributes in very different ways but almost always (to me) in a familiar way, which feels more personal (at this point) and less like the random bomb throwing of the broader internet. Like a bunch of older/younger cousins or something who only see one another at weddings and funerals every few years and share some history but don't necessarily know one another as well as immediate family.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 9 August 2019 13:02 (four years ago) link

for real that example about Beefheart is exactly the kind of recommendation of ilx you'd give to anyone who'd care

maffew12, Friday, 9 August 2019 13:03 (four years ago) link

Sometimes when I'm in the park and I pass a big pile of people in matching t-shirts gathered for a huge family reunion I think how funny it would be if all the t-shirts said "ilxor" and everyone was just sorting themselves out in real life. With the vast majority of posters still at home, posting about how stupid it sounds to have a big family reunion grill-out, or how awkward family reunions can be, or if there really is such a thing as familiy or reunions, or what bands should reunite or how bands are like family, and how the breakup of CCR was like a big ugly divorce, and how Clifford and Cook, when asked why CCR should get back together, immediately answer, in unison, "chooglin'," and when later asked if he'd join the reunion Fogerty says "no" and, asked "why not?" declares "too much chooglin'" or "chooglin' is not what it used to be" or "it was a different time, and chooglin' was different then" or "I've been chooglin' by myself for so long I don't feel I need the other guys to choogle." Or something like that.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 9 August 2019 13:10 (four years ago) link

THEM: "Ah, look. Your cousin even put on the Parker crest on the shirt even though we're all now either Middletons or Cottinghams!"

one month passes...

it doesn't really have anything to do w/ toni morrison specifically but more the general notion that, say, a black woman who made art mostly about and for other black women isn't really being talked about on this board primarily because we have no black women who actively post on this board

― marcos, Thursday, August 8, 2019 5:05 PM (one month ago) bookmarkflaglink

There is this, but there's also the effect (which I don't know if it's better or worse) where we'll talk about something that has an aspect (possibly a total aspect) relevant to an experience outside of our own, and, ignoring that aspect entirely, conclude that we've nailed it.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 4 October 2019 17:58 (four years ago) link

bump, just in case we've had any recent leavers who may want to share their stories.
