That was I believe a comic set in Brazil and originally written in French specifically for the European market which was later translated and published stateside.

I'm sure you absolutely needed all of that info.

I think I have the story with that OG Batman post included in this anthology, which I have owned since I was maybe 8-9 years old:

or else it's that "Batman from the 30's to the 70's" anthology

Swamp Thing is basically a plant-based Punisher, though. He's never had any qualms about killing. Presumably because he views humanity through the eyes of a rutabaga.

I don’t think that first Batman appearance fits, as it’s not a deliberate kill; but rather the classic self-defense punch which causes the attacker to fall to his death.

heh, i bought those books off the rack!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 8 August 2019 17:52 (four years ago) link

it was real and very charming... at least if you like the more laid-back "teens hanging out" aspects of Claremont's new mutants. Jo Duffy had bigger plans for the title that didn't materialize, so it ended up being kind of a curio. maybe most important for giving Multiple Man several of his ongoing concepts/issues with regard to the dupes having individual lives/experiences. (PAD would then re-do all this in X-Factor without acknowledging the source material.)

one of the new characters, Ariel the teleporter, made minor appearances in the late 2000s san francisco period. the other ones - Gomi and his lobsters, and the power-altering Chance, were never seen again AFAIK. i assume that either claremont or marc silvestri liked the idea of a streetwise, asian-american teen hero, and cooked up Jubilee on the premise that she should have combat-ready powers, or something. i guess we should be grateful Liefeld never saw fit to introduce pouch-laden, rifle-toting lobsters when he brought Siryn in for X-Force.

Marvel has been evoking Fallen Angels in the run-up to Hickman so I wouldn't be surprised if some long-lost characters made a return (plus, yeah, the upcoming Fallen Angels title).

Criss Angel Raw: The Mindfreak Unplugged (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 8 August 2019 18:27 (four years ago) link

yeah i always found that colossus scene really harrowing. a rare case where it was so clearly a break from the character's established nature/code that it felt like an intentionally traumatic breaking point, and at least in that one issue, not like a gratuitous "grim n gritty" turn as it would for similar developments in the early 90s (see green lantern mention above).

unfortunately this was followed by a sort of drifty period for the title, with colossus recovering from injuries off-camera for a year, then showing up just in time to die in dallas and be reborn in australia. iirc it never *really* felt like it got followed up on.... one of many casualties of claremont's late-80s storytelling and the growing x-stable.

Good morning, how are you, I'm (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 8 August 2019 18:47 (four years ago) link

(and yeah colossus had already killed proteus a hundred issues back but idk this just seemed so intense!)

holy moly that Ambush Bug series was awful

― Nhex, Wednesday, August 21, 2019 12:08 AM (one week ago) bookmarkflaglink

I was just catching up and saw discussion of this upthread but you beat me to exactly what I wanted to say (re: Year None). It's kind of shocking that the OG Ambush Bug crew was responsible for that POS.

McGrief the Crying Dog (Old Lunch), Friday, 30 August 2019 18:30 (four years ago) link

It should have been on matte paper, but it's definitely one of the greatest jokes in the history of Ambush Bug that issue by issue Didio was reading it and going "Making fun of Identity Crisis? Ha ha, so true, we didn't know what we were doing back then! Hey, Infinite Crisis too? Well, there were some excesses, in hindsight. Taking the piss out of 52? Boy, were the plates spinning on that one!"

And then it got to gags about Final Crisis or whatever was current and he freaked out and pulled the entire final issue of this six-issue making-fun-of-DC miniseries.

I'm rereading Busiek's Avengers run, and I totally forgot Warbird/Carol Danvers kills the Master of the World! The MotW actually tries to use the superhero no-kill-code for his advantage, saying that as an Avenger Carol wouldn't kill her, but she replies that since there's a war going on (this in the middle of the "Kang war" arc), the rules are different. Makes sense for the character too, at this point it'd been already revealed that before her first appearance in Captain Marvel she'd been working in military Special Ops, so she probably has less qualms about killing enemy combatants than the other Avengers.

Pretty graphic stuff, including extreme violence against a woman, so a genuine trigger (er, quiver) warning — this page and the following pages from Mike Grell’s Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters depict Ollie Queen freeing Dinah Lance from some very bad dudes... and he ain’t using “trick” arrows this time.
