So... have there been any truly memorable rap albums/tapes this year at all? There has certainly been a steady churn of more or less enjoyable rap songs, but which albums/tapes are we going to look back at in five or ten years as defining 2019? (Megan and DaBaby's albums are fun enough I guess, but I'm not loving any of them with a passion.)

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 15:18 (four years ago) link

jacquees, full of cobras (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 15:28 (four years ago) link

there were others that were admirable that didn't quite reach that level for me, like both dababy albums, stunna's 4x, nudy's sli'merre, sob x rbe's family not a group, denzel's zuu, ghostie's devour, and gibbs' bandana.

jacquees, full of cobras (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 15:29 (four years ago) link

also the quando rondo album is called 'from the neighborhood to the stage,' not 'streets'

jacquees, full of cobras (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 15:30 (four years ago) link

Thanks. I enjoyed the polo g, but it didn't stay with me.
The thug album was okay, but probably his first release in a while that didn't on some level feel special.
I've skimmed a few of the others, but will try to go back to them.

old dude rap respek knuckles on that list

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 17:43 (four years ago) link

Is that brother ali album good? I haven't checked for him in a loooong ass time

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 19:35 (four years ago) link

i think the Rapsody was the best rap album i heard this year / honorable mention to 2Chainz, Malibu Ken, Polo G and Tree

need to hear Mavi and Droog (and others)

alpine static, Tuesday, 3 December 2019 19:38 (four years ago) link

I didn't do a particularly deep look at hip hop this year (so don't count my ballot whiney) but a quick flip through my keepers file suggests the 2019 rap albums or EPs (or 4 or more singles released instead of an album) that I liked came from:
21 Savage
2 Chainz
8Ball and MJG
A$AP Ferg
Anderson.Paak
Big KRIT
Black Milk
City Girls
Common Market
DaBaby
Danny Brown
DeNiro Farrar
Devin the Dude
Dreezy
E-40
Earl (Still need to listen to this album more closely)
Freddie Gibbs
Future
Ghostface
Haviah Mighty
HER
IDK
J Cole (the year i finally gave up and kinda liked him)
JID
Kevin Gates
Matt Martians
Maxo Kream
Megan Thee Stallion
Murs and 9th Wonder
Nef the Pharoah
Peewee Longway
Quelle Chris
Rapsody
Skepta
Stormzy
Tree and Vic Spencer
Yelawolf
Yr Old Droog
Plus Missy and Chance and T-Pain and Tyler and the Migos guys (via Quality Control and features) all had a few worthwhile singles on their respective albums and you can throw Lil Nas X in there if you want to. Oh and the Swindle album which was great. And a bunch of viral singles. Even so, I definitely need to play end of year catch up.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 20:25 (four years ago) link

would be happy to discuss/defend any of those picks; several are ILM finds but a few haven't gotten any conversation on this board at all to the best of my awareness... Haviah Mighty for instance

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 20:27 (four years ago) link

fwiw 21's i am>i was came out right before christmas last year and has stuck with me as well as any other rap album has all year
tho my fave rap album of the year is almost certainly Maxo's. I gather it became a broadly accepted indie hipster fuxxxor fave as well based on pitchfork/youtube talking head love?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 3 December 2019 20:37 (four years ago) link

i think i would unreservedly love the polo g album if it weren't a little too long

dyl, Wednesday, 4 December 2019 07:29 (four years ago) link

it is a little too long, yes.

I've quite unreservedly loved City Girls in 2019, but their last album is from 2018

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 10:40 (four years ago) link

Only thing I’d cut from the polo is the unnecessary pop out remix ... if anything I’m still mad they didn’t include this which would have been one of the best songs on it:

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 14:13 (four years ago) link

what's in your top five this year, deej?

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 14:15 (four years ago) link

“Pop Out” remix is unnecessary, but it’s basically a bonus track as it is

jacquees, full of cobras (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 14:26 (four years ago) link

Btw, the Polo G album isn't actually very long, but it feels long, as in it could use a bit more variety. I have to be in a particular zone to want to listen to it. If I'm in that particular zone, it's excellent though.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 14:26 (four years ago) link

So lots of albums that people like here, but can we say it's been a nor particularly good year for trap?

Frederik B, Wednesday, 4 December 2019 14:27 (four years ago) link

As far as French trap is concerned, TripleGo's Machakil and PNL's Deux frères were both pretty good.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 4 December 2019 14:34 (four years ago) link

I could never get into PNL, I have to say. Too ambient.

Frederik B, Wednesday, 4 December 2019 14:38 (four years ago) link

Suit yourself. That's exactly what I like about them.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 4 December 2019 14:42 (four years ago) link

The PNL album is excellent, imo Au DD is one of the songs of the year.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 14:42 (four years ago) link

I like Rod Wave. Will give a few of these a listen. Thanks.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 14:46 (four years ago) link

rod wave is excellent, he works better for me in small doses tho. his beats are lush, but get a lil same-y

lucki's days b4 iii was excellent, just came out so long ago that it slipped my mind. haven't gotten to freewave 3.

good to see nocap's hood dictionary on there, will check out soon. i liked the backend child but it felt like there was another level for him to get to.

jacquees, full of cobras (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 4 December 2019 15:25 (four years ago) link

rio is another one i forgot to mention, he's a cut above his non-sada detroit peers imo. he is the banality king. "I get excited every time my flip phone ring" lol
