You can also type ‘x’ before things to get the small letter, or at least you can in Apple world so xke gets you ヶ

one year passes...

May finally try this wanikani thing

It’s good, I got all the way to level 60 and I’m on the run out. It’s helped my reading a lot.

Highly recommend the unofficial iOS app, Tsurukame, which is a much better interface than their web one.

Also didn’t get sucked into doing it as fast as possible. Stuff really starts to pile up once reviews start coming back at you. I had to take two substantial breaks to get through it all and I think it would have been more effective if I’d just set out at a more gentle pace. It’s a marathon not a sprint.

American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 00:18 (two years ago) link

Yeah, looks good, someone else recommended it as well. Seems to be well-organized. And yeah, I just binged on the first 20 radicals it gave me, I guess I'd better be careful going forward, as you say.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 22:19 (two years ago) link

In theory you can get it all done in a year, but you better have a lot of spare time every 4 hours if you want to do that, and be pretty sure you will get everything right.

American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 23:35 (two years ago) link

How do I keep from getting sucked in or it snowballing, as someone else said, just don’t do too many new lessons when they pop up?

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 30 April 2021 12:48 (two years ago) link

maybe limit yourself to 10 new lessons a day? no matter what you do you'll have days where suddenly 150 reviews land in your queue.

i did the first 8-9 levels quickly and then hit a wall and have made very slow progress since though that's more on me than the program

ciderpress, Friday, 30 April 2021 14:06 (two years ago) link

Thanks!

Tsurukame
Got this. Seems like I had previously had a predecessor app called WAniki which seems to be gone now.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 30 April 2021 14:38 (two years ago) link

So it hasn’t gotten bad for me yet- still only on Level 1, with no vocabulary unlocked yet- but can well imagine the tsunami of combinatorial explosions that is coming soon.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 30 April 2021 15:02 (two years ago) link

if you already know some vocab then the first several levels are gonna be pretty trivial and having to learn names for the radicals is kinda obnoxious

ciderpress, Friday, 30 April 2021 15:08 (two years ago) link

I pretty much know all the vocabulary that is coming up but I don’t always know the pronunciations they want for the kanji and/or I mistype them so I guess that’s useful practice. I am trying to cross check their names for the radicals with other lists. Well one at least.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 30 April 2021 15:16 (two years ago) link

Like what they call the drop is usually the dot, and construction is usually craft.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 30 April 2021 15:18 (two years ago) link

Also usually know the Japanese readings, which I still might mistype, but not necessarily the Chinese readings.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 30 April 2021 15:19 (two years ago) link

Unfortunately the only thing that can stop yourself from getting buried is self-restraint. It’s very tempting to think I have some spare time I’ll just learn a few more things. If you get that urge, I would recommend going and finding something to read in Japanese.

Keep in mind that I followed none of this advice, but i am now quite good at reading stuff in japanese so YMMV.

American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Saturday, 1 May 2021 01:52 (two years ago) link

The default Lesson Batch size is five. Does that make a difference, did you have it higher?

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 1 May 2021 12:25 (two years ago) link

Like I just had 21 new lessons show up. Maybe I will just do five for now....

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 1 May 2021 12:53 (two years ago) link

But already did ten...

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 1 May 2021 13:25 (two years ago) link

once the vocab starts hitting you'll never get through it all 5 at a time, theres like 100+ per level

ciderpress, Saturday, 1 May 2021 14:38 (two years ago) link

well i guess you'll eventually get through it but it'll be real slow

ciderpress, Saturday, 1 May 2021 14:42 (two years ago) link

Review at whatever rate I guess, but don’t do new lessons too fast to at least try and control the spigot

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 1 May 2021 18:40 (two years ago) link

Tweaking some of my other settings now

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 1 May 2021 22:12 (two years ago) link

I set it to pair the reading and the meaning, aka back-to-back, and to do the reading first. Also set it to Show All Kanji Readings. And just noticed that typing in an ON reading for Vocabulary that wants a KUN reading allows a do-over or two and doesn’t immediately count as an error.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 2 May 2021 00:09 (two years ago) link

Does it ever give indication when it is about to unlock?

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 2 May 2021 14:01 (two years ago) link

Ah, okay. Level 2 got unlocked yesterday and it sent me an email warning me to pace myself, eventually if not now.

Can see that this, like so many things, can be addictive and overwhelming.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 3 May 2021 16:14 (two years ago) link

In another news, looked at Busuu just now and their Japanese cause seems to have been revamped for the better. Probably too easy for anyone on this thread but still.

Other, not another

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 4 May 2021 05:48 (two years ago) link

So I am mostly using the app but the dashboard on the web has at least one important usage.

A Stop at Quilloughby (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 5 May 2021 14:19 (two years ago) link

One thing being the web dashboard has a good way of showing you what you missed on your last review.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 9 May 2021 04:07 (two years ago) link

And I’m trying to slow walk my way through Level 3, which supposedly will take six days and change instead of three, which is fine with me.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 9 May 2021 04:10 (two years ago) link

One thing that still irks me is the way ‘n’ works.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 10 May 2021 19:18 (two years ago) link

Anyway, feel like slow-walking *might just work.* Not trying to learn all the Kanji right away, trying to train myself to recognize the radicals and the ON and KUN readings to strengthen my recall and ability to use multi-radical lookup, for one thing.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 10 May 2021 19:21 (two years ago) link

Tried setting it to switch automatically to Japanese keyboard when needed but then it doesn’t switch back to English.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 10 May 2021 23:13 (two years ago) link

I think it’s easier just to use their built in IME. You aren’t fighting the keyboard’s desire to convert things to kanji then.

Also prepare yourself to get annoyed that a lot of what Wanikani teaches as ‘radical’ aren’t radicals in the strictest sense of the word.

American Fear of Scampos (Ed), Monday, 10 May 2021 23:54 (two years ago) link

Yes. I agree, thanks. Trying not to get annoyed by that, haven't seen it too much, but maybe it will annoy me. Also, thanks so much for the advice on going slow.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 10 May 2021 23:56 (two years ago) link

In principle, I think it should annoy me though, will see if it actually does.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 10 May 2021 23:57 (two years ago) link

The thing they call The Slide is that considered a radical? Or just katakana ノ?

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 11 May 2021 01:16 (two years ago) link

Also, I mess with different dictionaries but recently I discovered something nice on the one called simply Japanese: if you hit the Speak button when you look up a kanji it will say all the ON and KUN readings.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 11 May 2021 01:52 (two years ago) link

And the app named Japanese also does the nice thing of showing all the readings on the history list.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 13:31 (two years ago) link

Finishing Level 3 in a few days. Suppose I will pony up for the Premium. One thing I think needs to be managed is the explosion of content when a new level is reached, when you get both the, um, new radicals as well as all the vocabulary you have unlocked.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 21:25 (two years ago) link

Okay, ponied up for the full version. Wish me luck.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 13 May 2021 20:09 (two years ago) link

Do you still recommend bunpro, Ed?

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 13 May 2021 20:11 (two years ago) link

Taking a look now, trying to figure out how to use it.

Working in the POLL Mine (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 13 May 2021 20:26 (two years ago) link

I’m not using Bunpro at the moment but I have done. On balance not the best tool for testing your grammar, or at least not the one for me.

Most recently I’ve been using renshuu.org. Probably because the JLPT question style fits nicely with the lessons I’m doing.
