>Anyway, there ain't much to dislike from a Jays perspective imo.

every Jays fan i know right now is red-lining with rage about the last two days.

They should stop reading Cathal Kelly.

two main things:... no, three: the return for Stroman was light. we coughed up a (admittedly fringe) prospect for an outfielder no one thinks much of (along with Sanchez and Biangini). the return that Bauer, and to a lesser degree, Grenkie got make the Stroman deal look much worse (even tho, yes they are both better – they pulled in *a lot* more).

xpost - i'm not sure who this is.

Toronto baseball fans can sometimes be the worst. a lot expect every trade to land us joe Carter or Josh Donaldson. so there's a base level insufferable to every move. but there's more than a few people feel this deadline was a missed opportunity.
also doesn't help that immediately after the Sanchez deal, the main guy we just landed two days ago got destroyed in his first start for the AAA team.

I suppose i'm higher on Fisher than most. Or lower on what Sanchez and Biagini could contribute over the next 2 seasons.

No one was going to get Bauer's haul. I'll admit that something closer to that would have been great, but it doesn't make the Stroman deal a bust. And I'm not super convinced Stroman compares to Greinke.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 1 August 2019 03:07 (four years ago) link

Grenkie is obviously better, but the return was so disproportionate.
And I had through the consensus on Fisher was he was a bust?!

That was a big money move by the Astros, kinda nice to see a different club pull it off.

So....RIP mlbtraderumors until November? More like mlbdfarumors now.

Honestly, I feel good about the Orioles standing pat rather than giving up the competent part of the team for garbage. Villar, Mancini, Alberto, Givens, etc. make the 2019 team a lot more fun to watch, and just for that their value to the Orioles is higher than their trade value on the market. And I am not on board with the theory that the team should actually strive to lose 120 games and "beat" the Tigers to the #1 draft pick.

VHS: What is it you're seeing in Derek Fisher? Just looking at his career box, I'm missing it.

Having said that, on the call-in show last week, after the team let Pompey go, one of the hosts said that the Jays, because of Bautista and Encarnacion, should know better than most franchises the danger of giving up on someone too soon. So I guess Fisher's the other side of the that.

Joe Pos with a neat observation on Greinke - he's not the only HOF'er (lets assume) to play for 6 different teams, but he might be the only to switch teams so often in his prime. Bobby Bonds and Sheffield maybe come close but its not like Zack, where he's pretty clearly been in his 'prime' state for nearly his whole career (minus a couple of seasons I guess)

xp Fisher was never going to develop nicely in already stacked Houston. I think he is a fine project that will be worth 1-2 WARs in a position of need (outfield) for next few controlled years to come. Acuna he is not, but I am not even sure Sanchez + Biagini combined were worth 1 WAR over the last 2 seasons, in positions the Jays have more depth in.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 1 August 2019 17:57 (four years ago) link

xp also kenny lofton (not a hall of famer, but pretty close!)

though most of his team-switching was after his prime

maybe the closest guy to Greinke would be Gaylord Perry? when it's all said and done i can see them winding up w/similar WAR numbers. Greinke just cleared 70 on bWAR, Perry finished w/90.

I'd figure Gausman is to add innings to the Reds bullpen, as they are seriously gassed at this point.
