apparently there’s a brawl in the reds game and puig is in the middle of it because no one told him he’s been traded

mookieproof, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 02:32 (four years ago) link

Has a pitcher charged a dugout before?

Andy K, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 02:41 (four years ago) link

that trade is p crazy. trying to wrap my head around what each team is trying to accomplish.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 04:39 (four years ago) link

i can see what the ohio teams are trying to do, even if it’s weird

padres seem a lot higher on taylor trammell than anyone else is. maybe they’re right, but i’m skeptical

mookieproof, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 05:19 (four years ago) link

Was actually surprised they gave up slugger Franmil Reyes (no idea if his defense is a liability though)

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 14:07 (four years ago) link

yeah the consensus seems to be that reyes should be a DH

na (NA), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 14:12 (four years ago) link

most of the analyses i'm seeing are framing this as a win-win-win trade

na (NA), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 14:13 (four years ago) link

It makes a lot of sense for the Indians, after seeing who they get in return. For the Reds and Padres, not so much, I'm still a bit confused.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 14:30 (four years ago) link

Reds have a bunch of outfielders right now and getting rid of Puig opens up a slot. They now have a couple months to see what Josh Van Meter and Phil Ervin can do, as both have seemed promising at times.

From what I am gathering is that Trammell's AA struggles and his throwing arm might have made him slide to the one to go.

I think the take is that Bauer is a re-load for next years rotation. Would not be surprised if Tanner Roark moves on today.

earlnash, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 15:03 (four years ago) link

puig's contract is up at the end of this year, while bauer's goes through next season
padres have way too many infielders so reyes wasn't going to get enough playing time, particularly given his weak defense

i agree san diego's take seems light but those are the comments i've seen

na (NA), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 15:08 (four years ago) link

does this make Cleveland better right now tho? they gave up a solid SP for two decent outfielders (one who should be a DH) and prospects. they def came out on top in this deal, imho, but this looks like a half measure in two directions. was Bauer that expendable for them?

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 15:15 (four years ago) link

cleveland desperately needed outfield/DH power and they're banking a little too much on kluber and/or carrasco returning strong

but mostly they didn't want to pay bauer $20+ million in his final year of arbitration next season and this gives them a face-saving way out

mookieproof, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 15:29 (four years ago) link

The Mets took Syndergaard “off the trade market last night,” according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

okay

Right-hander Jacob Faria is headed back to the Milwaukee Brewers in the Jesus Aguilar deal, a source tells ESPN.

looking at what the indians just got for bauer just reinforces the consensus:

the blue jays really fucked up badly with stroman

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 16:32 (four years ago) link

up there with cardinals trading away Tommy Pham for a good reliever, last year

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 16:33 (four years ago) link

i think it's pretty cool that the reds and mets are making bold moves toward competing next year or making outlandish runs this year! i think they might be kidding themselves, but at least it's fun

pretty fuckin weird how all these first-place teams with obvious holes didn't make better offers tho

mookieproof, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 16:54 (four years ago) link

tony kemp to the cubs, martin maldonado to the astros

sucks that i have to root against tony kemp now

mookieproof, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 17:02 (four years ago) link

it also doesn't seem like there are many truly available great options this season

na (NA), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 19:26 (four years ago) link

like my big hope for the cubs would be signing ... whit merrifield

na (NA), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 19:26 (four years ago) link

i guess the bright side on pomeranz is that surely his 1.97 HR/9 will drop (?)

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 19:46 (four years ago) link

yeoooooooow

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 19:54 (four years ago) link

i knew that miller park was a hitters park and oracle is not, but did not realize oracle is by far the lowest HRs/game in the game. so yeah, this could get pretty ugly

but even then, even in an extreme hitters park, you'd hope that he won't continue giving up 1.97 HR/game, because that is awful. maybe he has been incredibly unlucky this year?

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 19:55 (four years ago) link

you know a pitcher is good when you have to count on them being incredibly unlucky so far and for that bad luck to suddenly stop, in order for them to be a viable SP

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 19:56 (four years ago) link

impressive move by the giants to unload both pomeranz and melancon

Your 2019 leaders in WHIP:
1-Justin Verlander 0.81
2-Zack Greinke 0.94
5-Gerrit Cole 1.00

That's your Game 1-2-3 starters in Houston. Scary.

Astros heavy favorites unless injury strikes. Holy shit

you know a pitcher is good when you have to count on them being incredibly unlucky so far and for that bad luck to suddenly stop, in order for them to be a viable SP

the Brewers are incredibly desperate for starting pitching right now

Jedd don’t call me Gyorko apparently headed to Dodgers

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 20:24 (four years ago) link

xp I see that!

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 20:24 (four years ago) link

I mean three of their SP went on the DL within a week, including the one guy who wasn't a horrible disappointment

frogbs, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 20:25 (four years ago) link

Greinke signed through '21. Is making $31.5M this year, will be paid $32M in '20 and '21.

Tanner Roark to A's

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 20:37 (four years ago) link

wonder if the prospects the Astros sent were any good, they're probably just thrilled to be rid of that contract. they got a playoff game out of it at least.

still bummed that Seth Beer hasn't come to the Brewers (yet)

frogbs, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 20:44 (four years ago) link

arizona gets houston's 3rd, 4th, 5th and like 20th best prospects. hate to not get tucker or whitley, and bukauskas has had a rough season, but that's pretty good

also: fuck the pirates

mookieproof, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 20:48 (four years ago) link

weird day for dombrowski
