I’m enjoying your podcast, Ned! It’s entertainingly nerdy, but in a way that doesn’t take it all too seriously. The right tone.

I found “the Roth show” last night, may dip a toe in

Also on the latest Robert plant one it was unexpected and nice to hear him heap praise on Townes van zandt. Didn’t get too specific but that’s ok

Cause there was a pretty huge gap in ‘72 between “the late great TVZ” and LZ IV

This Podcast Will Kill You a podcast about disease. Really quite informative and each week has a related drink called a quarantini based on some aspect of the disease so you can sip along with it.

Dressed a fashion history podcast.

Robert Evan's The War Against Everyone, on online radicalization and neo-fascism, is up.

Some XPs: his Behind the Bastards isn't that annoying, though his guests express unawareness of history more than they add humor.

On the subject of Robert Evans, I ended up dropping This Could Happen Here after three episodes - just didn't seem at all insightful to me, pointing out a lot of troubling trends and phenomena we already know about without any particular connective tissue between them. Maybe I stopped too early but it seemed to veer into wildly speculative territory after more or less promising not to.

i really enjoy the east is a podcast https://www.eastpodcast.com

The East is a Podcast is a show that focuses a critical lens on the history of the present of the modern Middle East and North Africa. Interviews with experts and archival mashups.

good eps on kashmir and yemen recently.

sound quality usually not great, lots of skyping

Nah, fatal scheduling issues. Blame children.

Simon H., Thursday, 12 September 2019 21:08 (four years ago) link

xp i've mentioned it many times before but if u don't already listen to the afropop worldwide podcast it combines amazing music w/ lots of great historical and contemporary information about the countries it visits and many episodes use music as a launching pad to explore much larger conflicts. i haven't listened yet but very interested in recent ep "Bolsonaro Is and Isn't" which they describe in ep description as a "look at who Bolsonaro is, who his targets are, and how he rose to power. We also hear the first round of songs written to protest his hard, right-wing politics." there was an ep a year or so ago about Kagame and his imprisoning of musician Kizito Mihigo that was v good, a recent ep about the relationship btwn haiti and DR and musical exchanges, etc.

Mordy, Thursday, 12 September 2019 21:23 (four years ago) link

that does sound good

They discuss so many great records!but I’m finding the hosts tough to take. The one guy needs to stop shouting over everyone, & they need to tighten up the editing. The episode on NoMeansNo’s Wrong, they ramble so much & never stop to give the music a chance to say its piece.

Haven’t listened to your episode yet, Hadrian. Will pass harsh judgment in the near future.

"they ramble so much & never stop to give the music a chance to say its piece."

I actually think they do a pretty good job keeping the rambling to a minimum, but agree about the music. I guess you can just pause and listen to the songs on spotify if you need to tho. Ive been loving this show recently - the level of geekery, and music theory, is just where I like it.

tobo73, Tuesday, 24 September 2019 18:12 (four years ago) link

I was specifically beefing about the Wrong episode — I quite enjoyed the Reckoning one, everyone knew when to pause and bask in the jangle.

And now I’m hooked on TRGMH. The Wrong episode was terrible, otherwise a great podcast. I’d like it if they tightened up the editing & spotlighted more of the music, esp when they point out a record’s great moments.

Just managed to make it 12mins into a This Album Got Me High episode and jesus it's awful. I hate the podcasts where it's just random people bullshitting for 10mins like we are interested in their friendly banter. This is my primary issue with podcasts. I don't like the nonsense at the start where they're just shooting the shit. Get to the fucking details immediately. I'm sure i'm alone in this because it seems nearly every podcast someone recommends requires me thinking the inside jokes of the hosts and their witty banter is fucking hilarious. I don't. I won't. I'm on some Dragnet shit. Just the facts ma'am.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 22 October 2019 15:47 (four years ago) link

podcasts need a netflix style "skip intro" button imo

This is my primary issue with television shows. I don’t like the nonsense at the start where they’re just sitting around a curved table discussing celebrity gossip of the day. Just get to the fucking dead bodies and clues immediately.

now let's play big lunch take little lunch (sic), Tuesday, 22 October 2019 16:08 (four years ago) link

Speaking as a fan of banter oh wait. Our episodes have maybe a minute or two of that at the start and separately at the end, because why not, but otherwise we try to talk about what we're there for.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 22 October 2019 16:16 (four years ago) link

podcasts are just having friends simulators for some people so banter is popular. i mean there's lots of popular podcasts which are literally just banter

Seany's too Dyche to mention (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 22 October 2019 16:17 (four years ago) link

Ha I was just listening to a recent That Record Got Me High a couple days a go and thought to myself how, by podcast standards, on-topic those guys tend to stay during the intro section. Lowered expectations, I guess.

tobo73, Tuesday, 22 October 2019 16:48 (four years ago) link

Clearly my position is the minority opinion. I'm listening to Heavyweight right now, and it does not suffer from the pointless banter, though it does have some back and forth before each episode gets to the subject.

xp, maybe I should push through minute 12. It was the REM Reckoning episode. On a related note, I can't get through a single R U Talking About REM episode. Those guys are the worst. Maybe someone will edit the jokes and banter out and just keep the information.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 22 October 2019 16:53 (four years ago) link

any suggestions for history podcasts? have been working my way through Mike Duncan's excellent Revolutions podcast, similar shows would be appreciated. also we are coming up on our 50th episode of the 78Man Presents show, never imagined we'd get anywhere near this many!

Nope. The 'shooting the shit inside jokes harhar amirite fellers' intros to lots of podcasts put me off, too. (and the laughter, sooo much laughter that it just so off-putting).

99% of the people are a drag to listen to. This was the case before podcasts arrived, and has not changed.

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 22 October 2019 17:05 (four years ago) link

yes listened to History of Rome last summer, really excellent stuff! I also read his book The Storm Before The Storm which is good but is lacking the jokes/wit. It probably wouldn't have worked very well on the page so I can understand why he left that stuff out, but it makes the book more dry as a result.
thanks Ned, Tides of History/Fall of Rome looks like exactly the sort of thing I am looking for.

The Ravishing of ROFL Stein (Hadrian VIII), Tuesday, 22 October 2019 17:17 (four years ago) link

thanks Ned, Tides of History/Fall of Rome looks like exactly the sort of thing I am looking for.

The original Fall of Rome series was just him and it's a classic 'dude with a mic' approach, some flubbed bits in the edit, etc. But Wyman knows his stuff and it built a following -- he had a Deadspin series (of all things) going at the time, I think through the Concourse specifically -- and it got smoother as it went, then it transformed into Tides and he started working with a production team. He does pretty good interviews as well; a number of recent episodes are just that, talking with a variety of academics and writers.

Age of Napoleon is swell, similar vibe to Revolutions imo

I'll have to keep that in mind! But yeah, it's been an absolutely essential example of living up to the title -- while Bonaparte is the focus, he did an extensive job in scene-setting even before introducing him, and all the various side divergences and explorations have been amazing. Very glad I was all in from the first episode.
