boobie, Monday, 29 July 2019 22:43 (six months ago) link

This record is... something. But it’s very good.

Honestly it reminds me of Max Tundra as much as it does PC Music

^^ the twain run into each other a lot! Love this obv.

stupid horse is clearly the long-awaited fourth-wave of ska

josh az (2011nostalgia), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 00:23 (six months ago) link

I saw a gecs evangelist on twitter refer to it as “Ska 2” and that was the moment I got onboard

what else are you all “over” (Champiness), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 03:57 (six months ago) link

i didn't really like this album but i do like the dylan brady remix of charli xcx's "blame it on your love", perhaps more than the original (but not as much as "track 10") - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_j-1ZJ5xpY

monotony, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 04:11 (six months ago) link

i'm way too fucking old for this but i sent a link to the guy i still talk to in indiana because i for some reason don't know anybody here i can talk to about music? and he was all over it

he also liked the daphne and celeste album, which i loved but that's much more "old person" weird

anyway i've done my part for the world

Un Poco Loco Moco (rushomancy), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 23:49 (six months ago) link

They released all the stems and pieces for this online so you can remix it to your heart's delight.

josh az (2011nostalgia), Thursday, 5 December 2019 19:28 (two months ago) link

Idk why pc music people would hate this it seems like pc music with a better marketed image

I get that there’s a novelty to this I think is interesting

But it’s also borderline un-replayable ... a guy I know told me a (possibly apocryphal) story about his (probably annoying) friend who when in a museum would walk up to a painting and go “I get it” immediately. That’s how I feel when I listen to this ... “I get it.” There’s a kind of disruptive shock to how they’ve rearranged their previous influences/inspirations/junk culture in some new, coherent formation. But it’s also like ... that’s all there is, it’s all surface, so once you’ve talked about that, what is there? Something very temporal about its appeal to me, that especially once they get sucked up into the attention machine, I’m curious how well they’ll be able to sustain it

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Thursday, 5 December 2019 21:46 (two months ago) link

its one good idea, basically ... i appreciate that they dont stretch it out past 22 minutes or whatever

ILX’s bad boy (D-40), Thursday, 5 December 2019 23:01 (two months ago) link

looking forward to them digging into the craft of songwriting, but also not expecting it

Pretty weird to see 100 Gecs get embraced by hipsters after like 30 years of message board posters calling John Zorn and Mr. Bungle insufferable neckbeard music

The Mandymoorian (Whiney G. Weingarten), Thursday, 5 December 2019 23:06 (two months ago) link

I think ringtone is genuinely a well written song. Catchy, and it switches up in the second half before it returns to the start. But yeah, a lot of the album is noise with jokes on top. Which is great as well.

Agnes Motörhead (rushomancy), Friday, 6 December 2019 00:58 (two months ago) link

I think it’s mostly trans teens.

Trans teens who read the Fader

Post videos that feel like SNL skits and / or migraine auras

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 6 December 2019 12:19 (two months ago) link

my only disappointment with coming out as trans was finding out that trans people in real life listen to the same sort of music everyone else listens to; we're not really some sort of tastemaker cultural elite. eventually other people will cotton on to the fact that we're not actually "cool" but until them i guess we can snow them by talking about 100 gecs

Agnes Motörhead (rushomancy), Friday, 6 December 2019 14:23 (two months ago) link

whiney some of us have actually been waiting almost thirty years for someone to mr bungle all the great music that came out after mr bungle just let us have this one okay

based grandpa (noz), Saturday, 7 December 2019 06:45 (two months ago) link

I just keep going back to this album again and again, which isn't something I expected after my initial listen. Definitely up there as far as album of the year goes.

(I also listened to Mr. Bungle a lot in the 90s)

also, "money machine" is kind of all-time great somehow
