Yes--Ernie Whitt's HR in the 10-0 comeback an all-time Jays moment.

clemenza, Sunday, 28 July 2019 11:47 (four years ago) link

First time ever: team comes back from seven down one day, same two teams the next day and the other comes back from seven down.

clemenza, Sunday, 28 July 2019 22:04 (four years ago) link

The other day, in advance of Stroman leaving, one of the call-in shows was canvassing callers for their top 5 Blue Jay starters ever. The hosts talked for 10 or 15 minutes first. Halladay and Steib, obviously, they agreed. They both included Clemens--I wouldn't, because you're talking about a two-year stint, but if you want to, fine. After that, they batted around Hentgen, Stroman, Guzman, Estrada...not even once did Jimmy Key's name come up! Checking Blue Jay leaders, Key still sits 3rd in WAR, 3rd in ERA (tied with Stieb; 2nd among starters), 4th in wins, and 4th in IP. He's such an obvious pick for me, either third or fourth depending upon Clemens.

i hear bo’s been called up?

mookieproof, Sunday, 28 July 2019 23:44 (four years ago) link

Ya.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 28 July 2019 23:50 (four years ago) link

The one thing that seems clear is that Shapiro and Atkins were fixated on getting rid of all remnants of the '15/16 teams--just Smoak is left, who I guess is cheap enough and drama-free enough that he gets to stay. So they have their clean slate, and they have their core of young position players right on or ahead of schedule. Now all they have to do is conjure up a pitching staff out of thin air.

clemenza, Thursday, 1 August 2019 12:19 (four years ago) link

i think that's why the deals we saw were light on the returns. they had their plan and were going to stick with them. extending Stroman might have made sense - most their future hitting core are up, so why not lock in a solid arm, or at least see how things look next year. but i think they were just determined to move everyone they could for what they could.

they went into the deadline around 21 on the fangraphs farm system rankings and have moved themselves into the #16 slot (most of that movement was from from Kay and SWR). but i feel like they could have done a lot better.

With the very large caveat that we've been playing the Orioles and Royals, the new guys are kind of exciting right now. I'm nicknaming them "The Squad."

clemenza, Friday, 2 August 2019 14:06 (four years ago) link

Stroman not good, Sanchez throwing a no-hitter through 6--win some, lose some.

clemenza, Sunday, 4 August 2019 01:12 (four years ago) link

Very small sample size but how in the world does Brent Strom get all these pitchers to be that much better?

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 4 August 2019 01:15 (four years ago) link

Someone get Tim Lincecum to Houston.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 4 August 2019 01:25 (four years ago) link

They actually did it (6 innings from Sanchez). Means nothing, I know, but it will be funny to listen to all the panicked hand-wringing on the Monday call-in.

Is every no-hitter now multiple pitchers?

clemenza, Sunday, 4 August 2019 02:15 (four years ago) link

oh god

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 4 August 2019 02:34 (four years ago) link

This is too funny: 2 HR and 5 RBI for Sogard.

clemenza, Sunday, 4 August 2019 03:02 (four years ago) link

What did Vernon Wells do tonight?

clemenza, Sunday, 4 August 2019 03:07 (four years ago) link

i dunno – but Fisher took a fly ball to the face and had to leave the game last night,

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 4 August 2019 16:31 (four years ago) link

Slump (or simply reality) on deck, but what a start for Bo Bichette:

32 AB, 7 XB hits, 2 HR, .406/.457/.750

clemenza, Monday, 5 August 2019 14:46 (four years ago) link

He can tie the jays record tonight for hitting streak to start a career. I don’t watch games too often, but might put this one on tonight.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 5 August 2019 17:14 (four years ago) link

Barfield and Goins (looked it up)--speaking of whom, Goins is playing really well for the White Sox (although not all that often).

clemenza, Monday, 5 August 2019 17:58 (four years ago) link

yes – Goins is part of the depressingly long list of recently departed Jays who are doing unexpectedly well.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 5 August 2019 18:00 (four years ago) link

Bo: 2-2, double and a homer.

clemenza, Tuesday, 6 August 2019 00:17 (four years ago) link

That was a sweet start to the game.
I kind of find Fishers black eye hilarious.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 6 August 2019 00:36 (four years ago) link

nine games. blue jays record. also set some mlb record for xbh streak to start a career or somesuch. no biggie.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 7 August 2019 02:43 (four years ago) link

Yes: 10 XBH in his first nine games--first time ever.

clemenza, Wednesday, 7 August 2019 03:20 (four years ago) link

Another double for Bo, his 8th in his first 10 games.

clemenza, Wednesday, 7 August 2019 18:25 (four years ago) link

All streaks alive: HR for Bichette today. (We don't concern ourselves with things like "wins" and "losses" anymore.)

clemenza, Friday, 9 August 2019 01:07 (four years ago) link

This kid.
Also new guy has hit his 2nd home run for us!

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 9 August 2019 02:09 (four years ago) link

double in nine straight games is a major league record

mookieproof, Friday, 9 August 2019 02:43 (four years ago) link

Was just going to post: XBH in nine straight games, first rookie to do that since Ted Williams of the MFL.

clemenza, Friday, 9 August 2019 02:44 (four years ago) link

Ridiculous start. Plus Vlad Jr seems like he has some potential too...

omar little, Friday, 9 August 2019 04:12 (four years ago) link

Cavan Biggio has 41 walks in a little over 200 AB!

omar little, Friday, 9 August 2019 04:12 (four years ago) link

(59 games)

seems legit

omar little, Friday, 9 August 2019 04:14 (four years ago) link

so the one game i do not check in on.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 13 August 2019 05:47 (four years ago) link

vlad since bo arrived: .373/.429/.686, 191 wRC+

never let them be separated again

mookieproof, Tuesday, 13 August 2019 19:45 (four years ago) link

Bo now 1/5th of the way to his dad's career bWAR! (only a smidgen over 1/10th of the way according to fWAR).

omar little, Tuesday, 13 August 2019 19:50 (four years ago) link

Another record last night...sort of--these x-number-of-games records are admittedly a little contrived.

Didn't realize we had more spawn on the way: Griffin Conine, currently leading the Midwestern League in HR. (22 in A-ball doesn't seem that special, but they had somebody on the call-in yesterday who was high on him.)

clemenza, Saturday, 17 August 2019 12:50 (four years ago) link

he's def got his flaws. his k-rate is the big red flag. he's also playing around dudes roughly his age, normally with prospects you like to see them succeeding against players older than them. not sure why they haven't promoted him either – if it's the Ks or his defence or what.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 17 August 2019 16:54 (four years ago) link

That's the thing that gives me pause too--by "22 in A-ball," I meant his age, not how many HR he's hit. They'll have to start moving him up the ladder quickly if they want him up here before he's 25.

(They always link fathers-sons-brothers on Baseball Reference, but they don't Griffin linked to Jeff yet.)

clemenza, Saturday, 17 August 2019 17:03 (four years ago) link

maybe BR knows something Jeff/Griffin don't!

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 17 August 2019 17:18 (four years ago) link

I clicked on "contact" and sent them a message about this a few days ago, got a response today:

"We only link major league player relationships. If Griffin makes it to the majors, then we'd add the link on his newly created major league page."

That seems kind of silly to me. Your father is only officially your father if you make it to the majors.

I wonder if Guerrero's finished for the year? Not a lot of incentive to bring him back too quickly.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 19 August 2019 20:51 (four years ago) link

They’re saying that the mri came back clean, so I’d be surprised if he was done for the year, even with being cautious.
