Derek Holland, tied for fifth (along w/Verlander, Cueto, and Vargas(!)) among active pitchers in career shutouts with 8.

The Mets’ consideration of a deal for Marcus Stroman, in their Noah Syndergaard machinations, is absolutely bizarre. Stroman can impact two pennant races before free agency— and Mets aren’t in a race this year. It would be a waste.

mookieproof, Saturday, 27 July 2019 21:09 (four years ago) link

The Twins on Saturday night announced the deal that netted them reliever Sergio Romo, Chris Vallimont, a right-handed starter in High-A, and a player to be named later from the Miami Marlins in exchange for Double-A first baseman Lewin Diaz.

According the MLB site, Stroman is headed to the Mets. Don't think he'll be very happy about that--I'm sure he had his sites set on the Yankees.

clemenza, Sunday, 28 July 2019 22:06 (four years ago) link

Wild move, no idea what to expect in the next 3 days.

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 28 July 2019 22:18 (four years ago) link

I don’t get this at all. Why the Mets would do with Stroman or what on earth they would have that fits the jays needs.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 28 July 2019 22:20 (four years ago) link

stroman is from long island, i don't think he'll mind playing for the mets

and if he still wants to be a yankee, he only has to wait a year and a half

mookieproof, Sunday, 28 July 2019 22:37 (four years ago) link

last i heard the mets were pretty high on anthony kay. really no clue what they’re doing

supposedly there was a ‘commotion’ in the jays clubhouse, v. exciting

mookieproof, Sunday, 28 July 2019 23:03 (four years ago) link

I think it’s because they also just fired one of their coaches. (Duncan)

Also I would have expected more for Stro. These guys seem ok, but this is the best they could do?!

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 28 July 2019 23:26 (four years ago) link

weird that it would be *two* ptbnl.
how closely do you follow the Mets farm system – you got thoughts on the two guys the Jays just got?

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 29 July 2019 00:18 (four years ago) link

The tenth-best homer rate among qualified starters in the juiced ball era for an A-ball guy and a guy struggling with homers in Triple-A, seems worth it for the Mets. Weird return for the Jays.

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Monday, 29 July 2019 00:24 (four years ago) link

The projected BABIP for Stroman on various systems is .307-.310. The Mets have allowed a .308 BABIP this year. Focus on the homer suppression, which seems real, since it’s happened over his whole career, and the BABIP/infield defense thing doesn’t seem to be a big deal.

lyles actually pitched pretty well in 16 innings for the brewers last year, so i guess they know what they're getting. it was the only slice of his -3.2 bWAR career where he was above average

The #Mets scratched Ervin Santana from his Triple A start today. Syndergaard scheduled to pitch for them in majors tonight. Not known whether two are linked.

Hearing same. Wheeler also possibility, and Bauer might be as well. Tim noted Bumgarner in earlier tweet. HOU on Bum’s no-trade list, but there is incentive for him to approve a deal. Player traded mid-season ineligible for qualifying offer, exempt from draft-pick compensation. https://t.co/6fWB2NpTCC

i can see what the ohio teams are trying to do, even if it’s weird

padres seem a lot higher on taylor trammell than anyone else is. maybe they’re right, but i’m skeptical

mookieproof, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 05:19 (four years ago) link

Was actually surprised they gave up slugger Franmil Reyes (no idea if his defense is a liability though)

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 14:07 (four years ago) link

yeah the consensus seems to be that reyes should be a DH

na (NA), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 14:12 (four years ago) link

most of the analyses i'm seeing are framing this as a win-win-win trade

na (NA), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 14:13 (four years ago) link

It makes a lot of sense for the Indians, after seeing who they get in return. For the Reds and Padres, not so much, I'm still a bit confused.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 14:30 (four years ago) link

Reds have a bunch of outfielders right now and getting rid of Puig opens up a slot. They now have a couple months to see what Josh Van Meter and Phil Ervin can do, as both have seemed promising at times.

From what I am gathering is that Trammell's AA struggles and his throwing arm might have made him slide to the one to go.

I think the take is that Bauer is a re-load for next years rotation. Would not be surprised if Tanner Roark moves on today.

earlnash, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 15:03 (four years ago) link

puig's contract is up at the end of this year, while bauer's goes through next season
padres have way too many infielders so reyes wasn't going to get enough playing time, particularly given his weak defense

i agree san diego's take seems light but those are the comments i've seen

na (NA), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 15:08 (four years ago) link

does this make Cleveland better right now tho? they gave up a solid SP for two decent outfielders (one who should be a DH) and prospects. they def came out on top in this deal, imho, but this looks like a half measure in two directions. was Bauer that expendable for them?

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 31 July 2019 15:15 (four years ago) link

cleveland desperately needed outfield/DH power and they're banking a little too much on kluber and/or carrasco returning strong

but mostly they didn't want to pay bauer $20+ million in his final year of arbitration next season and this gives them a face-saving way out

mookieproof, Wednesday, 31 July 2019 15:29 (four years ago) link

The Mets took Syndergaard “off the trade market last night,” according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

They should stop reading Cathal Kelly.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 1 August 2019 02:49 (four years ago) link

two main things:... no, three: the return for Stroman was light. we coughed up a (admittedly fringe) prospect for an outfielder no one thinks much of (along with Sanchez and Biangini). the return that Bauer, and to a lesser degree, Grenkie got make the Stroman deal look much worse (even tho, yes they are both better – they pulled in *a lot* more).

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 1 August 2019 02:54 (four years ago) link

xpost - i'm not sure who this is.

Toronto baseball fans can sometimes be the worst. a lot expect every trade to land us joe Carter or Josh Donaldson. so there's a base level insufferable to every move. but there's more than a few people feel this deadline was a missed opportunity.
also doesn't help that immediately after the Sanchez deal, the main guy we just landed two days ago got destroyed in his first start for the AAA team.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 1 August 2019 02:58 (four years ago) link

I suppose i'm higher on Fisher than most. Or lower on what Sanchez and Biagini could contribute over the next 2 seasons.

No one was going to get Bauer's haul. I'll admit that something closer to that would have been great, but it doesn't make the Stroman deal a bust. And I'm not super convinced Stroman compares to Greinke.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 1 August 2019 03:07 (four years ago) link

Grenkie is obviously better, but the return was so disproportionate.
And I had through the consensus on Fisher was he was a bust?!

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 1 August 2019 03:27 (four years ago) link

That was a big money move by the Astros, kinda nice to see a different club pull it off.

So....RIP mlbtraderumors until November? More like mlbdfarumors now.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 1 August 2019 16:24 (four years ago) link

Honestly, I feel good about the Orioles standing pat rather than giving up the competent part of the team for garbage. Villar, Mancini, Alberto, Givens, etc. make the 2019 team a lot more fun to watch, and just for that their value to the Orioles is higher than their trade value on the market. And I am not on board with the theory that the team should actually strive to lose 120 games and "beat" the Tigers to the #1 draft pick.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 1 August 2019 16:32 (four years ago) link

VHS: What is it you're seeing in Derek Fisher? Just looking at his career box, I'm missing it.

Having said that, on the call-in show last week, after the team let Pompey go, one of the hosts said that the Jays, because of Bautista and Encarnacion, should know better than most franchises the danger of giving up on someone too soon. So I guess Fisher's the other side of the that.

clemenza, Thursday, 1 August 2019 16:47 (four years ago) link

Joe Pos with a neat observation on Greinke - he's not the only HOF'er (lets assume) to play for 6 different teams, but he might be the only to switch teams so often in his prime. Bobby Bonds and Sheffield maybe come close but its not like Zack, where he's pretty clearly been in his 'prime' state for nearly his whole career (minus a couple of seasons I guess)

frogbs, Thursday, 1 August 2019 17:52 (four years ago) link

xp Fisher was never going to develop nicely in already stacked Houston. I think he is a fine project that will be worth 1-2 WARs in a position of need (outfield) for next few controlled years to come. Acuna he is not, but I am not even sure Sanchez + Biagini combined were worth 1 WAR over the last 2 seasons, in positions the Jays have more depth in.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 1 August 2019 17:57 (four years ago) link

xp also kenny lofton (not a hall of famer, but pretty close!)

though most of his team-switching was after his prime

maybe the closest guy to Greinke would be Gaylord Perry? when it's all said and done i can see them winding up w/similar WAR numbers. Greinke just cleared 70 on bWAR, Perry finished w/90.
